The topic that I am considering for my newsletter is about reading/literacy. It is important that children read not only in school but at home as well. I want children and their parents to be inspired to read more and understand how early literacy makes an impact on children’s development. It is important that the community, teachers, parents, and caregivers understand how important reading is in a child’s development. Reading books provides a lifelong relationship with the printed word while teaching children the importance of language and literacy. Children like to read what interests them, thus making them want to read more. A favorite strategy of mine is called the word wall. The word wall is on the wall and has all the letters of the alphabet on it and each letter has Velcro on the back. This helps children to decode words based upon letter patterns and their sounds. It also helps children to recognize and analyze word patterns. One more strategy I like is called multi-sensory. This is when we provide children with a variety of modalities when reading. These include touch (tactile), movement (kinesthetic), what we hear (auditory), and what we see (visual). Using this strategy helps children learn how to read, spell, and write. The only challenge I see it getting some parents to understand the importance of reading and how important it is for children in many different areas of development. Some people think reading is just that, reading, but it goes much deeper than that. I might have trouble stressing the importance of how crucial reading is starting at a young age. A question I had is do I bring up in my newsletter all the positive effects reading has in a child’s development or just write a couple bullet points? A great resource that I consider valuable in writing my newsletter is the local library. This is a fun trip for children to take with parents. Children get the opportunity to pick out books they have an interest in and the library has so many options to choose from. There are also many online
In Sponsors of Literacy, Brandt argues that individual and group literacy stem directly from sponsors in the form of role models, educators, media, and many more sources of language and communication acquisition. Brandt claims that sponsors, through intentional or unintentional actions, influence an individual’s ideologies and relationship with literacy. Through the interviews which Brandt conducted in the 1990s with people of varying literary and sponsorship experiences, Brandt discovered that an individual’s access to literacy opportunities: libraries, computers, or traditional education, had a monumental impact on their career, ability weather political or economic upheavals, and capacity to function profitably in society. Professor Deborah Brandt’s research article “Sponsors of Literacy” is about the importance of the sponsors. According to her, sponsors are the ones that provide the sponsored the access to literacy. Brandt interviews about 100 people and through those interviews, Brandt makes three main points regarding sponsors. The first one is about how different kinds of sponsors can produce different kinds of performances. The example that Brandt shows to the readers is the difference in the background of Raymond Branch and Dora Lopez. Branch is able to be exposed to the more powerful sponsors, while Lopez cannot. In the prior Literacy Action Plan, the material, resources, and information used and found were done for specific reasons. These reasons were found by using data from state assessments and district assessments from Okeechobee School District. Janice Greenberg stated “Tony Wagner goes on to say that children will need seven basic survival skills to succeed in the world that awaits them which are as follows: 1) Critical thinking and Problem Solving, 2)Collaboration across Networks and Leading by Influence, 3) Agility and Adaptability, 4) Initiative and Entrepreneurialism, 5) Effective Oral and Written Communication, 6) Accessing and Analyzing Information, and 7) Curiosity and Imagination” (Greenberg, 2011). These are also reasons why students should be proficient in reading and writing and why we have to write a Literacy Action Plan so we have action set into place to help our students achieve proficient scores in Reading and Writing.
Celestine’s (pseudo name) school is located in the country side, on the sleepy town of Plant City, Florida. From what it looks like a scene from a children’s book, the main building sits perfectly between beautiful strawberry fields. Celestine’s school is Title 1 by cause of 88% of its students being on free or reduced lunch. The school has approximately 807 students, but its population fluctuates due to migrant and low income families attending. Plant City is known for its farming community and the Strawberry Industry, which it draws families to the area for seasonal work. The Elementary school serves pre K to Fifth grade students and has a population made up of 50% White students, 45% Hispanic students, 3% Black students, and 2% Two or more races. The school has a large ESE population which are served in both, self-contained classrooms and within regular education classrooms through inclusion.
I believe that reading is an important way for children to learn. However, there has to be a combination of everything. The primary goal of language and literacy during the infant and toddler years is to help children hear and distinguish the sounds of language in their environment (p.44). I believe that children need to play in order to develop their fine, gross, and other skills. The need to explore and the experience will help them to self-regulate their emotions. According to the article, the most effective ways to prepare your baby for reading involve playing games and sharing book, and repeating words.
Next, is the Early Literacy Intervention Literacy Intervention Initiative Act. “The early childhood years are the most Important period for literacy development.” (Freeman, Decker, Decker (2013) p. 231). The Early Literacy Initiative is a joint effort with the State and local government to identify children with reading deficiencies and implement early reading intervention programs. Children are able to connect the visual of seeing letters on the page and the vocal sound of their parent as they are being read to. They also learn their colors, shapes, alphabet, numbers, and expand their vocabulary. Each of these skills will assist in reading comprehension and literacy.
There are three important frameworks teachers should think about when developing lesson plans. The first one is literacy lesson format. This format has three different steps, which include: introducing the text, reading and responding to the text and extending the text. When introducing the text the student previous knowledge should be activated about the subject and the students should develop their own purpose for reading the text. When responding to the text students should do this over the course of the reading. By the end they should be able to go back and summarize what they read while answering any questions they may have acquired while reading. Finally the students should extend the text by making personal connections with the text
Children can take more than one of these steps at the same time. This list of steps, though, gives you a general idea of how your child will progress toward reading.” (Helping your child become a reader) While these ideas may seem structured, it is also important to allow children to be creative and use their imagination. Although reading is imperative, too many arrangements and rules can turn a child off and lead to feelings of resentment, anger, and resistance. Reading should be set to the tone and pace of the child.
My response from my checklist for an effective literacy program revealed that I am a very animated teacher. I encourage my students to laugh with me building a positive relationship. I found that my students enjoy my lessons when I bring in prior experiences. Modeling the lesson with humor capture the student’s attention and they are eager to participate and collaborate with the peers and teachers. My strength demonstrates that I model all my lessons and make them student friendly. I plan and model my lessons by incorporated and adapted the skills to students’ individual needs. I also teach cross curriculum allowing students to build from each core subject.
The topic that i am writing on is if children should have to read more. My writing in this will be on the effects of reading in their lives. Reading is important because you need it in daily life: reading a recipe, or a road sign, or a schoolbook. Without reading our lives become significantly more dangerous, if we can’t see road signs, or ingredients in a recipe, or read a map. Overall reading is an essential skill in today’s world. My claim is that children should be required to read more because almost every job requires reading, and reading has a base importance in life.
Books encourage perceptual skills in children while also promoting early literacy skills. Families are often encouraged to provide a variety of reading material for their children, especially at an early age, to give children plenty of options when learning how to read. When children are provided with a variety of reading material at home, they see that a high value is placed on reading. If parents value reading at home, children tend to value it also, and the more a child is encouraged to read at home, the more they will want to engage in reading in general. My philosophy of literacy is centered on providing a learning environment rich in authentic literature, instruction that is engaging, fun, and balanced, collaborative, and also involving families in the child’s education. My ultimate goal of literacy instruction is to help children become lifelong readers and writers by providing the skills necessary to comprehend, construct, and make meaning of text, speak, and write. According to the National Reading Panel, there are five essential components that must be taught in effective reading programs: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
