I am interning at Center for American Progress, which is a progressive policy think tank, under their Women’s Health and Rights program. My main focus will be researching policy related to women’s health care and reproductive justice. Through this internship, I hope to gain hands on experience with policy and research related to women’s rights, and learn how this can actually make a difference in the status of women in the United States. Just from my first two days, I can tell I am going to have to learn how to research efficiently and effectively if I want to go into this field. I have never done very rigorous research, so this will be a great learning experience for me. I have also already learned a lot more about health care policy for women in the United States from my research, so I hope to gain a decent amount of knowledge on that subject during my time here. Professionally, I hope to make connections with not only my supervisors and co-workers in the Women’s Health and Rights department, but also people from other departments of the organization, such as the Economics department and LGBT department. That way my connections will not be isolated to just one field of study.
2. Keeping in mind the value of “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,” in your work and professional life, what motivates you to serve others? What values will give your internship meaning which has or will sustain you over the years?
Social injustices motivate me to serve others. Specifically, I am passionate
This semester, I am currently interning at Washington Adventist Hospital. I intern twelve hours a week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. At the beginning of my internship, my goals were to learn as much as I can being on the Cardiology floor, learn how to talk to patients, learn how to work in a hospital setting, and learn how to communicate efficiently with nurse’s and patient care technician’s. I also learned how to answer phone calls and made sure to ask the right questions. This not only provides the nurse with what they are asking for, but also helps provide the right information to the doctor as well.
An internship can also heighten the awareness of community issues, motivates to create opportunities, embrace new ideas, and give direction to positive change. A successful internship can provide valuable information in making decisions about the direction of future studies or employment. An internship is an opportunity to not only use and develop industry-related knowledge and skills, but also to enhance some of the skills that are transferable to any professional work setting. For some people, the internship is the first introduction to the world of work. No matter where the skills and understanding of professionalism lie, internship is a chance to develop them even further.
My motivation is to be part of moving the U.S. government into the 21st century. The 115th Congress will face many challenges shaping U.S. technology policies and regulations. As a Congressional Innovation Intern, I will improve my capacity to effect change by applying my technology and policy skills to assisting with this effort. The internship will provide invaluable experience in learning how legislative change happens in Congress. Taken together, these will enhance my ability to effect the change I anticipate in my future career.
I believe that an internship in either Human Services or Health Sciences will be an an exceptional way to see firsthand what I have been reading in textbooks and discussing in class for the last year. I have always had a particular interest in the clinical side of psychology, so given the choice I would like to shadow a practicing professional rather than spend time "behind the scenes" or in a lab, which in turn will give me hands on experience with patients and a better understanding of psychological disorders and issues. Through such interactions I hope to fully display my communication, analytical, and problem solving skills and eventually put them to the test. I hope to gain not just the experience of the work life, but also I want to learn
Currently, I am a district intern for San Francisco State Assembly David Chiu while pursuing a master degree in Public Administration/ Health Administration at the University of San Francisco’s School of Management. When I first began this journey of obtaining my degree I had the goal in mind to continue my education until I receive my Doctoral Degree. By obtaining my Doctoral Degree in Business Administration I can make a difference in people’ lives by sharing the knowledge I have gain through my educational studies and work related experiences. As a student of Saint Leo University I have been able to apply the University’s six core values of Excellence, Community, Respect, Personal Development, Responsible Stewardship, and Integrity to my life experiences. I volunteer at numerous community events, such as the city of Newport News annual South East Community Day, Family Redirection Institute’s C4 annual week long Community Event, and Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority Community Day Events, that are geared to bring together and empowering the community. Through applying these core values to my lifestyle I have gained more insight and experienced more fulfillment with the achievements I have accomplished. By obtaining my Doctoral Degree I will have the opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain a better perceptive for the corporate environment, community and
It appears the Holy Spirit has graciously lead me into your midst for my required internship this academic year. As a student at United Theological Seminary for a second masters in Religious Leadership, I am writing to you today to tell you a little bit about myself.
After speaking to people, I often had a time to reflect on what I heard. The product was a much greater understanding of the complexity of the American political system. I grew up thinking that that one side was right, and the other was full of irrational arguments. However, people sharing bits of their lives with me taught me that is not true. The support and opposition for every policy makes sense, and deciding which is right is far more of a value judgment than a facts-based judgment than I could have imagined. I feel less sure about what I believe politically after the internship, but again, I do not think that is a bad thing. For the first time, I know how to enter into a thought process without a bias, and able to listen to both sides. This skill is critical for any studies or career in the social sciences.
My time spent serving at Sunrise was designed to fulfill three purposes: first, to learn more about the world and the my interaction with the community outside of the church; second, to learn more about myself -
Although I gained some knowledge about the public sector throughout my internship experiences, I still have the urge to learn and experience more about this subject. Being an intern at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office: Victim Assistance Program got me more involve in the subject of public administration. As an intern, I had to inform the victims about the services the Victim Assistance Program offers. In addition, my responsibilities were to document calls for statistical purposes. I had to maintain files/records of the victims as well.
Experiences in service offer more opportunities to be taught than for your deeds to make an impact. These experiences have established and strengthened the fundamental moral principles that I live my life by. Throughout my education, they have been challenged and developed by academics, missions, and cultural experiences. Education can only carry one so far if it’s lessons are not implemented in service to this world. Through fostering a love of people and the world, I have found that learning sparks curiosity, curiosity kindles exploration, exploration illuminates discovery, and discovery ignites
“Why do you wear a suit every day to school? Why do you take 20 college credits while working part-time as a communications ambassador when you should be in high school? Why do you read business and motivational books?” These questions allow me to examine and fine-tune my values. In brief--I commit to being the best I can be in any situation, to create an impact in people’s lives.
I was excited to learn about the numerous internship opportunities that are offered by the Center for American Progress. I have a very strong interest and to contribute to the mission and values that this policy institute presents as well as gain knowledge from work and research being done. I firmly believe that I can support the goals Center for American Progress and that my experience aligns with what you’re looking for.
If chosen as an intern I hope to gain tools to maintain employee focus on patient care, to learn the processes and measures taken to analyze and improve quality within the organization, and to discover how Emory promotes health programs in the community. I have great interest in the quality area of healthcare as I believe strongly in quality patient care which encompasses all employees, equipment, and processes found in a hospital. With the mentorship aspect of this internship I hope to gain advice on honing my talents while also gaining new knowledge to advance my current education. I look forward to the chance to meet and socialize with other students that share similar interests because it gives me a chance to make connections while also learning from my peers and their
The agency where I am completing my internship is called Center for Family Services. This organization provides a wide range of services. I am working in their Family First program. This program is a substance abuse program just for mothers who must attend drug court or have an open case with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency. These women are ordered to complete a substance abuse program. This program serves a diverse cultural and ethnic population who may have experienced trauma in their life. Many times, trauma and post traumatic stress can lead to substance abuse.
