They are women with incomes of $25,000 or more a year that care about their appearance and spend money on beauty products. They tend to have curly or frizzy hair. They are women that tend to use beauty salons and keep up with fashion and fashion trends.

Some estheticians choose to specialize in the application and selection of cosmetic products, which can lead to work in the film and theater industry, or provide freelance work for weddings, photographers and more. The many choices in esthetician careers closely resemble the paths available in cosmetology, and an individual seeking esthetician training should examine both career paths closely to decide which is right for his or her needs. It is my life-long goal to become an Esthetician. Since very early in my life, I have been attracted to the beauty industry. Becoming someone capable of helping individuals in ways that is not possible with other careers would bring me so much joy and honor. I would love to attain a career that allows me to share and express my passion and artistic abilities with the public. To achieve my goal, I have researched many schools and found that MC College has the programs I am looking for. I have chosen cosmetology as my research career. This career particularly interest me because it is something I would like to do with my life. I feel this career is filled with opportunities that can be very beneficial to me financially and emotionally. One specific goal I have in my life is to one day open my own salon.

Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. Makeup and nails are other areas of interest for me. I am going to be studying cosmetology to become licensed as an entrepreneur for hair, makeup, and helping to make the lives of others better. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or training, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.

The importance of beauty has been taught since the first civilizations. It is known that the cave people of the Mesolithic period (around 10,000 B.C.) softened their skin with castor oil and grease, and also used plant dyes to tattoo their skin. Lipsticks first appeared in the ancient city off Ur, near Babylon, 5000 years ago. Ancient Greek women painted their cheeks with herbal pastes made from crushed berries and seeds. The idea of cosmetology and beauty was commenced by ancient tribal hunters. It is believed that they would smear ash under their eyes and use animal urine to alter their smell. This is where the idea of eyeliner and perfume originated (Schurman). Around the world cosmetology is being introduced like Egypt is suggested to be one of the most ancient culture that associates with cosmetics. Make up to them was really significant especially to the royal egyptians. Their idea of eyeliner was made up of lead, ash and mercury. The use of this eyeliner helped reduce glare, prevent any type of infection, and mostly to make their eyes beautiful (Schurman). Now the Chinese ancient culture had mixtures of natural ingredients to produce stimulating nail polish. The nail polish to these people were sign of wealth (Murphy). In ancient Rome and Greece those who could afford it would receive baths in lotions. They wore perfume, face powder, blush, eyeliner, and lipstick. During this period it was discovered that oils, lotions, and animal fat have beautification properties (Schurman).

Comically, the first time I ever wore black eyeshadow, my friends asked me “Em, what’s on your face? Did someone give you a black eye?” I knew from then on that cosmetology school was not in my future plans. I wanted my face to be flawless; to be airbrushed and smooth like the models in teen magazines. Society told me that in order to be beautiful, I had to fit into its confines of perfection. In this essay, I will be discussing how the beauty industry has evolved between the period of 1997 till present, the transitions and effects it has caused as well as the possibilities for the future of what it could become.

Unrealistic body ideals lead women to feel inadequate because of how their own beauty falls short in comparison to beauty ideals. The beauty industry continues to trend upwards despite recent years’ economic situation. Consumers are still embracing the beauty industry and are predicted to increase their spending in the 2011. According to 2011 studies the beauty industry has shown an increase of about 11 percent in dollar sales from 2010 to the end of 2011. See Exhibit B in the appendix section for prestige beauty growth by country: 2011 vs. 2010. The U.S., U.K, and China had the most robust sales period in 2011 in the prestige beauty category.

In the 21st century, beauty and make up are like the wheels of a cart or the two sides of a coin. Women are beautiful in themselves; but a little make-up does help a lot and it keeps one to make the day better and happier. Every woman wants to be pretty whether she’s young or old so the beauty salon is the place to go. Beauty salons are also like a temple; however, the difference is that we go to worship in the temple and in the beauty salon we go to be worshipped by the beauticians and by the other people around.

Everyone loves to feel beautiful, but what is the price? Everyday there is a woman painting painting her nails, a man running gel through his hair, and a mother rubbing lotion on her childs skin. These are looked over like normal activities but they contain a dark secret. This secret can lead to death, pain, and injuries. In fact, it has been in the dark so long, that many people choose to ignore it. What is this secret? Well, the beauty industry hides an ugly truth: It has flaws in the system that lead to mislabeling of products, unregulated chemicals in formulas, and dangerous diseases in cosmetologists.

It its through teaching others how to apply makeup, we can strive to help others feel comfortable and confident in their own skin. Wearing makeup help embrace our natural features and may also help express the ideas in a creative way like art.”

Often times, women are pressured by the mainstream media to upkeep a stellar appearance. They are expected to measure up to high standards without question. Even before most girls reach puberty, commercials are bombarding them with small Barbie esque makeup kits filled with lip glosses and chalky eyeshadows. The impact it has on impressionable children, both girls and boys is something that will likely last a lifetime if unlearned. Cosmetic companies who are marketing to young ladies say they can simply improve their looks to gain acceptance from their peers if they use the products they are selling. The makeup industry is a multi million enterprise that makes a profit from women’s insecurities and amplified pressures from society as a common tactic many cosmetic campaigns use is to push women to embrace the ‘natural look’ by providing products that will make it appear as if the individual is not even wearing makeup. Companies will spout out that with these products, the end result will be ‘you, but better.’ It is somewhat of an underlying and slightly manipulating slogan, as if to say how a woman appears could be improved because it is lacking in the moment. This distorts how we all believe how a woman is suppose to look.
