“I want to be a bridge to the next generation.” A quote by Michael Jordan, it reflects my motive to serve children in my community. The most important lesson I learned from a day teaching Junior Achievement was that leadership was a gift to be received. Leaders are created and it is up to current leaders to not maintain the old generation, but shape the next one.
Leaders are not born; they are created through influence. Teaching Junior Achievement showed me that these curriculums allowed children to discover their gifted leadership styles and exercise them at a young age. When teaching My Region to a class of fourth graders, I gave students the ability to create their own business using their geographical location and resources at hand. I
There are many qualities that come to mind when a person thinks of a good leader. It may not be an actual person that is pictured when term “leader” comes in casual conversation, but instead just a series of characteristics or experiences that might make a person fit to be in charge. Or rather instead there are some that see themselves when they think of authority and power, still even those that imagine what they could become if given the proper training. The emphasis society places on leadership is undoubtedly instilled within the minds of every child from a young age that are urged that having a sense of leadership is the only way to be successful. Despite this, only few are really fit for a position where
It can come from being in charge in a school project for language arts literacy or running a fundraiser to help raise awareness to a disease. They take charge in something with an effective sense and choose to embrace their acts of self assessment. What their group or themselves is good at,their weaknesses and strengths.Once they figure that out, everything goes smoothly.Even from a project once the topic is clearly explained and managed by the leader there is no problem getting across from the littlest of obstacles. True acts of leadership here in Terence C Reilly, is not being carried out by bad influences. They have a good ethic of relations with other classmates and prove to work collaboratively.Although teamwork and cooperation is part of a leadership, it all leads up to an effective communication within others.Students have different leadership skills, but never do it in a bad way. They are integrated and not even in schoolwork do they have to be leaders. You can hall moniter and you’re the leader of the hallway or perhaps setting up a new fundriser you had created. You are managaing something for
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
What is leadership? Are individuals destined to lead or are they mentored into it? Leadership can be taught and seen by hard work, mentoring and a specific mind set, but the great leaders are born with the leadership quality. Leadership is taken from hard work. If one individual sees another individual working hard than the other will try and help the fact and get the job done with more efficiency by he also trying his hardest. It has a conformity affect. If most people in the group work hard and keep their eyes on the prize than good things will happen. Leadership could have been taught by the worker that began the domino affect with the conformity of the group. He could have a very humble father that taught him that hard work pays bills. Therefore if he works to his abilities than the worker will receive riches. If a worker only half-asses it than he will not move up the chain of life. Some people have mind sets that make them successful. Herbert hoover, the 31st President of the United States was an orphan.( The Biography.com website.) This tells us that no one's life is invaluable, and that no matter what environment a person comes
In class we defined leadership as using relationships to influence others. Before I came to the Academy I believed that a person could only lead their peers or subordinates. I did not believe that a subordinate could lead their superior. In high school I had many opportunities to develop my leadership with peers and subordinates. I was an officer of National Honor Society, and using that influence and my prior knowledge of NHS activities from the year before I was able to practice my leadership with my peers. I learned how to communicate in a manner to convince them to take action quickly, but not in a way that would seem overbearing or condescending. Furthermore, I was able to be a small group leader for a number of middle school retreats at my parish. In working with sixth grade boys I learned how to deal with insubordination and chaos, and with both of these groups of people I began to understand what was needed in a relationship between a leader and a follower. Our relationship had to be characterized by sincerity and respect. In both of these activities, those that I was leading could have easily stepped back and not paid attention to anything I was asking them to do. I had to convince them that I was absolutely dedicated to what I was trying to do, and that I had their best interest in mind. When leading middle school retreats I had to be a role model and show I valued my relationship with
Throughout my high school career I have encountered the chance to experience the position of being a leader for my peers. I have pursued leadership skills by being an officer in HOSA for three years, leading community service events for NHS, and taking charge on running school events in Key Club. I have obtained valuable leadership skills throughout my high school career, and encouraged the club members to take charge and develop leadership skills to help them in the future.
John Quincy Adams once said “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, and become more, you are a leader.”
Leaders have been around since the beginning of history in which their decisions and actions molded today’s society. From George Washington’s command to victory during the revolutionary war to the triumph of Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent equal rights movement, there have been leadership qualities that have been evident throughout history. Society depends on the abilities of leaders in order to progress in the right direction and finish a specific task. There are many forms of leaders in which different skills are required. Each person has a different view of what a leader and leadership is, however, everyone is influenced by the leader they choose. An efficient leader is someone others turn to for guidance, direction, and inspiration in order to complete a goal. One who possesses leadership qualities is able to influence and persuade individuals in order to attain a desired end. Everyone has the power to be a leader and make a difference in their community. The leaders on Long Island are an important aspect of society because they influence the futures of teens and help them to discover their abilities.
Being the oldest of six children to a single mother has naturally spurred me to shape and build my leadership skills. Over time, I have gained the ability to lead in situations that I deemed necessary. Consequently, I have become an active member of both the National Honor Society and the Female African American Scholars organization (a group geared toward creating a motivational community among the academically successful African American students in my school). Additionally, I have become captain of John Glenn’s varsity tennis team and I have launched a nonprofit business to guide teen mothers through the Young Entrepreneurs Academy. All of my obtained leadership skills have proven useful to me on many occasions.
One of the main things to being a leader is being passionate in the field one is working in. If you do not care about the field you are working in, then someone else is not going to look up to you as a leader. All of the teachers at school show they are passionate about their job and therefore we look up to them to be leaders. Angela said, “Passion makes the impossible possible”. When we have to write a paper, we sit there for hours trying to think of a topic and think that it is impossible, but the teachers who have passion about teaching students helps us realize how it is possible and that makes them even more of a leader. If one is passionate about their area of study, then they are going to be teachable which will make them an even better leader.
For the entirety of my high school career, I have been a student in the Leadership Center for the Sciences and Engineering (LCSE) held at Norview High School. Being enrolled in this specialty program has strengthened and pushed me academically, as a leader, with public speaking, and as a service worker. Specifically, LCSE has developed my leadership skills and allowed me to become a more service-oriented leader. In the first year of the program, students take Leadership Foundations where the basics of leadership and the history of great leaders are taught. Then, in Advanced Leadership students model leadership skills by hosting holiday gatherings, being counselors for the LCSE Summer Orientation Camp, and completing 200 volunteering hours.
Leadership can be about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that the impact lasts in your absence. The leadership program has been such a wonderful experience for those within the district. There are so many positive things that have come out of the program so far. The fundamentals which include Myer's Briggs Type Indicator have given the groups a great way to connect to one another and get to know each other better. This can continue within each school and classroom to help build on and create a positive environment for adult-adult, adult-student and student-student relationships. Action research is another way to learning about improving schools and empowering educators. This is going to be
I think and every successful teacher will agree with me that promoting the success of every student is the main value of any educational professional and it is very important for a leader to demonstrate these traits. What is leadership? Some people think that it is good to be a boss and it is easy to rule any organization. Leadership is more than just to rule any organization. It is the development of a practice around a mission or vision and an ability to inspire others to do the same. There are three sets of practices make up this basic core of successful leadership practices: setting directions, developing people and redesigning the organization. Foster (1989) says, “Leadership differs from conventional administration in much the same way that education differs from training (p.10).” This speaks to results- to the why of teaching. And the value of a leader can be determined by their results. If their aim is high-quality education (an admittedly vague term), academic success, and well-being of each student then this is the standard by which they should be judged. Burns admonishes that “power and leadership are measured by the degree of
There are many kinds of leaders; some lead through position and authority, while others lead through inspiration and vision. Some people are simply natural born leaders. However, whether one was born a leader or has to become a leader, all great leaders spend time developing their traits. Similarly, when you train for a sport, you first learn to develop the fundamentals, and then you work to master and apply them. I’ve been told I am a born leader, but have always sought to improve my leadership abilities through experience. Maxwell states, “The learned leader; has seen leadership modeled most of life, has learned leadership through training, and has self-discipline to become a great leader” (Maxwell, 93). This statement is reflective of my experience during my military tenure, and what it means to me is; leadership must be developed in practice, as well as in theory.
Leadership comes from various aspects of resources. Some of these resources are based on scholarly articles. Each individual that is interested in becoming a leader should be able to pick up on various traits and characteristics so they can develop into strong
