Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to be a soldier. Whether I am a pilot, a surgeon, or an operative, I’ve romanticized the idea of being a soldier with its grind and grueling conditions as part of a higher purpose. Rather than just taking orders, I would rather assume leadership and work with those who I command to get things done. That’s not because I like giving orders to people and micromanaging; it’s time-consuming, prone to mistakes, and ineffective. It is always best to have faith in people. Not blind-faith, nor a lack of it. Therefore if I am to be a soldier, I’d rather be an officer. In the field, in the action, but a part of the decision-making. If I wanted to kill people or just fight without getting punished for it, I would become a mercenary and make more money in the process, but that lacks the purpose, discipline, order, and brotherhood found in the U.S. military. The fact that I can think, believe, say, and do what I want as long as it doesn’t hurt others in this country, permanently anchors my loyalty and love for this country. I may be a second-generation immigrant. I may be labeled as Muslim-American or Turkish-American. But ultimately I am an American. All of us here were once immigrants. Whether two generations ago, or fifteen generations ago, we all, at one time, immigrated to this land, which has yielded bountiful blessings to all who chose to call it their home. I owe more to this country than the people who came before me. Those who have come here generations ago may have paid their debt over generations. But since my family has only been here for a quarter of a century, we owe more.
