Week 5 Imperialism Questions 1. Even though most of Latin America became independent of European colonial rule in the 19c, what were some of the cultural influences and other ties that still existed between the two continents? Between 1810 and 1825, all the Spanish territories on the American mainland gain their sovereignty from Spain. Simultaneously, the power of the Catholic Church diminishes, including its patronage of the visual arts. During these war-torn years, cultural production declines. These years witness political reform and the beginnings of self-fashioned societies. 7. What was the late 19c definition of the word imperialism? How has that definition changed in the post-World War II era? It meant complete domination, and it changed again as Germany took over everything in WWII and than it meant to make a sort of treaty with another country. 8. Identify some of the early 20c opponents of European imperialism. What were their explanations for the imperial fever that dominated most European countries [and the United States] at that time [see docs. on pp. 910-912]? Ghandi was one of the opponents, and they did a silent protest and nonviolent protest in order to rebel these forms of imperialism. 9. Why do modern historians feel uncomfortable with these early 20c explanations for imperialism? Because it was a time of devastation, many deaths, lots of tragedy and really abuse and exploitation at that point in time. 10. What were some of the political, economic, social, intellectual, and military factors that explained the sudden increase in the pace and importance of European imperialism in the late 19c? The essential impetus was the Industrial Revolution which led to a search for (and control of) sources of raw materials and captive markets to sell manufactured goods, and become a world power with the most colonies and most money. 11. How did their colonial experiences help make them good civil servants back home and vice versa?
