As a social work it is important to understand the communities you are working in, from a professional perspective because it is crucial to know if there are any other resources your patient can potentially access for assistance. Getting to know your community can help you build a strong relationship with individuals to achieve the common goal, to help families in the community. Being aware of what is going on in the community can demonstrate to others that you are there in their best interest. The environment where people live often shape individuals. Learning the environment where someone is from can help you learned about a person. What goes on in the community often have an effect on how people are and often shape families. Being able to be the person individuals from the community trust and greet every day can make the job easier.
One of the land marks in Culver City is the Culver City hotel which is one of the most known attraction. The Culver Hotel is known for where the Munchkins stayed during the filming of The Wizard of Oz in 1938. It is also known for secret passageways and high stake poker games. Another landmark would be the Sony Entertainment Studios where the Wizard of Oz, Men in Black, Spider –Man, Wheel of fortune and Jeopardy. This piece of writing is going to demonstrate an understanding of diversity, difference and also discuss the implications for social work practice. It will include an understanding of theories and concepts in relation to diversity where it will address the needs of diverse communities, individuals and groups, exploring differences in relation to culture, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, social class and economic wellbeing. Loss of home, loved ones, independence, identity, and a sense that the world is no longer safe are all central to the experience of a disaster such as the 2009 Victorian ‘Black Saturday’ bushfires. Most people will suffer a degree of distress in the short-term and only some will have more chronic long-term conditions such as PTSD and the impact of trauma can be felt by those not directly affected. Social work professions need to understand the importance of how individuals interact both with other people and their environment, to have an understanding how individuals are affected by these interactions (Rogers, p. 2). According to Rogers (2016), “Social workers are knowledgeable about human behavior across the life course; the range of social systems in which people live; and the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being. Social workers apply theories and knowledge from the liberal arts to understand biological, social, cultural, psychological, and spiritual development (p. 2). Their work with clients begins with assessments to evaluations of intervention and is based in and supports of the core value system of the profession.
Community is the difference between being and belonging. It is just too easy to just be a part of a group, but to feel like you belong to the group is far more meaningful. You can go to the meetings and know everyone’s names but none of that means anything if you don’t feel that you are a significant component in a group. To be a part of a community means that you are a part of group where inclusion, support and friendship are highly-regarded. The beauty about community is that everyone has their own gifts, talents, opinions and experiences to offer to it, therefore making each member valuable. As a Resident Assistant, I intend to create an inclusive community in which each person is accepted and encouraged regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual-orientation or ability. By promoting diversity in my community, I hope that everyone gains a sense of belonging. Understanding the need of the community is important to social work because it will be our guide in how we serve our community as a whole. Our role is to respond to the needs of the vulnerable population by addressing issues of poverty, diversity, homelessness, equality and health concern of the individual that live within our community. The homeless population within our local community has continued to rise. And over the past few yours has cause a lot of concern for local business in our downtown district of Columbia. Improving shelters and providing much needed services have become vital in order to help our community see a decline in the number of families on our local streets.

Modern social workers participate actively in helping people to obtain rights, services, benefits and opportunities that they might not otherwise obtain through micro policy advocacy, ?often prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations when they engage in advocacy? Through community immersion, the social worker gains an understanding of the community attributes and desiderata, requiring them to utilize their experience and expertise to advocate policies that will satisfy the client?s needs (NASW, n.d.). Furthermore, when social workers immerse themselves in the community, it becomes an act of care and concern to serve the community. In the generalist social work practice, a social worker is a change agent due to the expansive and complex umbrella of social and human services and roles. A change agent works to promote positive changes for the well-being of an individual, family, group, organization or community. In order to fulfill the tasks of a social worker, one should be trained and equipped with a wide variety of skills: such as setting appropriate boundaries, possessing and utilizing self-awareness and the ability to counsel or advocate for clients. In addition to many skills, the generalist social work practice includes a surplus of methods to either prevent or intervene when necessary. A method often utilized by social workers is the person-in-environment conceptualization. The person-in-environment perspective considers factors, such as familial or economic, beyond the individual to better understand the client’s behaviors or situation. Another method is the strengths perspective. The strength-based perspective focuses on the client’s or client system’s positive qualities to build upon those capabilities. And the recognition of strengths helps to achieve goals in a more client-led approach. Generalist practitioners are professionals with a wide range of knowledge and a repertoire of diverse skills in order to enhance the social functioning of all within society.
