Power, Privilege, And Responsibility is Education
Imagine what the world will be like without education. Malcolm X states that “without education, you are not going anywhere in this world.” People think they will get through life without education, but little do they know the importance of it. Educated individuals have power because they are able to understand complex info and are more informed to prevent being taken advantage of. It is also a privilege because not everyone has access to education and those who do have education get better treatment. Education is a responsibility because educated people have to act fairly and honestly. Don Cardinal did a speech about “Appreciating Your Privilege, Embracing Your Responsibility,” therefore

Trust is power” (Cardinal 4). Skloot shows how education is power throughout the whole book. One of the ways that was shown how education is power is by Deborah who lacked in education because she says, “when I go to the doctor for my checkups I always say my mother was Hela…” (Skloot 9). Deborah at a young age left school in the sixth grade to go help in the field but then she ended up going to school and barely finished high school. She hardly understood anything because she was practically deaf and had a difficult life at home. The only reason why she barely finished was because Bobbette, a very close family told her “I don’t care what you do, but you get an education, cause that’s your only hope” (Skloot 116). Second reason why she lacked in power was because she does not really know anything about her mother except that her mother was used in the science world. Deborah must rely on Skloot for information because Skloot understands the scientific terms unlike her. The third reason why she lacked in power was because Deborah does not know who to trust. Before she met Skloot, a man name Sir Lord Keenan Kester Cofield came trying to help the Lacks family by informing them what Hopkins did with their mother cells, but things ended up bad. The attorney of Hopkins told the Lacks family who Cofield was, he was a man who got out of prison, lying about who he was saying he was a lawyer and a doctor, so he
Public education began in the nineteenth century, now the majority of people have received some sort of public education. Whether someone has received a middle school education or a college education, any education will impact someone's life. Throughout educations existence, many people have come to believe there are many flaws with its methods, which is limiting students. However, public education helps to promote students to gain educational knowledge, the knowledge someone gains will positively affect their future.
Education is extremely important and very basic, it’s so important that there is a likely chance of not being able to live a life in a successful and happy way without it. Education helps to develop a personal opinion of the world, it can also expand many mandatory skills. Obviously, education also gives the knowledge of many things. Knowledge is power, without knowledge, what is the alphabet? What are numbers? What is mathematics? The effect of not knowing any basic knowledge about many subjects has a big impact in daily life. If a person without disabilities can’t do the basic math, calculation, or problem solving, then life for that person isn’t very successful, that person won’t know how to pay tax, buy food, and do daily routines. But on the other hand, the opinions that education gives can lead to massive improvements in life. For instance, independence skills. Independence skills is one of the most important skills to guide to a successful life. For example, According to https://addicted2success.com, it states, “Independence can help increase your self-value and self-esteem, more so if becoming independent is one of your goals. The achievement of financial, emotional, social, career and personal independence gives you a sense of accomplishment that eventually changes how you rate yourself and how others view you. Independence is also a great booster to your self-esteem and personal success.” The quote above states, “Independence is also a great booster to your
The importance of education in the United States is stressed in words, by people who act like they want you to succeed, but do not push or motivate you to do so. My generation does want things handed to us without much effort having to be put in by us, but for most part if people push us to do things we will want to go above and beyond. I speak from my personal experience, but I know I am not the only person that can relate. People go to school just to receive a diploma or to get a degree, simply because it is instilled in us throughout our school years that if we don’t have a diploma or degree we won’t be able to get a job and be successful in life. McDonald’s will not even hire you without a high school diploma, so people do the bare minimum just to get that diploma. Students go to school to earn a grade, not to learn. I was one of those students that paid attention just so I could pass the test, then never bother to revisit what I learned.
America has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave since Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star Spangled Banner.” The extent of America’s global influence is unparalleled. The country that advocates freedom and justice for all does not appear to include quality of life under that umbrella. A country’s Quality of Life (QOL) is a summation of the quality of education, health care, violence, and income. Unfortunately, because the United States is a vast, diverse nation, many problems still persist. While one may argue America is the best country in the world, quality of life is not considered when making that statement. America very well may be the best country in the world; however-- it does not have the best quality of life in the world.
There is a famous quote by Miles Kingston that states, "knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad." Often people use the words Knowledge, Wisdom, and Education interchangeably. However, this is far from appropriate. Currently, being an educated individual does not necessarily mean that that individual is wise or knowledgeable but simply that he or she has had an "education" and therefore carries a level of status and qualification.
The way you grow up directly affects how successful you are in the future. Many parents can’t provide as much to their children to give them the necessities they need for school, medical care, and even the basic needs. When it comes down to it, the way a kid is taken care of shapes who they are as a person and their development in this world.
Parents put their children through the educational system with the hope that their education will lead to real world success. Many skills and lessons are taught and learned in the average 12-year education that children are required to undergo. Although schools teach many subjects such as math, science, and English; many would criticize that they do not adequately prepare students for real life. Some, if not most, classes that are required during grade school teach useless life lessons that are not transferable to the real world. These classes are tested and graded by a system that is not visible in real life. All throughout a student’s education, teachers who may not care about the students, train them to pick a degree and get a job, without offering more creative life plans. This letter is being written to inform you, the school board, of the flaws in the public school’s curriculum and ways to improve them.
Education is a very important tool that most people strive to obtain because it is knowledge and information that the world provides us to change for better. I believe education has a big effect in children, teenagers, and adults in the United States because it an environment of a modern lifestyle where we are pushing our kids to be the best intelligent mindsets that the future holds. The author Carl Singleton wrote “What our education system needs is more F’s” and he states his opinion in how the grading system should work according to his point of view. I have read different articles that the topic is similar to Carl Singleton’s article but I disagree with this one because of his statements.
For generations my family has devoted their lives to actual survival and finding contentment. As Armenians, we have struggled through genocide and economical devastation. My family’s lives were focused on their livelihood as human beings. Survival was their first priority and thus education was not really an issue. For my grandparents, it was not even possible to attend school in any form. When my family chose to come to the US, they gave my brother and me the most amazing gift, the opportunity to gain a real education. I was given the chance to not have to struggle with attaining the best education possible. The struggles my family faced helped me realize that education is a true privilege. My family’s lack of education helps me
This world is filled with different types of people, some who believe education is gained through one way, a series of standardized tests or even ___. However, there are some people who base education off of an individual’s own natural mind. The growth of a child is necessary no matter which way they gain their knowledge. As a society, we must accept the tender plants of youth and any weeds along the way. Knowing that each person has different flaws and different strengths, if that is cultivated instead of being weeded out, it can be more beneficial for a society as whole because it brings in the versatility needed for a society to function properly.
I am in awe that education is seen as mandatory today compared to the past. How much can one learn if they are being forced? People should indeed have the choice, because after all, this is America- the land of the free. Education is displayed today as the only way a person is going to succeed in this world. To my surprise, the amount of universities have indeed increased an astonishing amount. There must be other ways that the society can have importance. I am truly amazed. In order for a person to make a name for themselves, and to make any sort of profit than the only option they have to grow is to get an education. This must be put to an end. Additionally, it is no shock to me that Harvard students are still sitting at the top of the
Everyone deserves the opportunity of an education, and although we see change throughout the world, some still do not manage to see the importance of education and the impact it can have is capable of having on an individual.
A famous quote by Nelson Mandela says “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” Education is powerful, especially now. Education can give people endless possibilities and change futures. Sadly, more and more high school graduates are passing the chance to have a college education. They don’t see the purpose or value anymore. This problem is getting more persistent as years go by. College is still valuable because it grants a higher salary, gives more career opportunities, and teaches lessons.
John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” I never thought education was extremely significant when I was in elementary. But, I was sure lucky to be able to get educated, some of us never realized how fortunate we are. Quality education is quite difficult to find, maybe even education itself is hard to discover to certain people. It’s also hard to find quality teachers/staff and schools. I realized that problem many times.
Education has been my biggest opportunity in my life. Learning new information will make the
