When our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math modules were updated, our district added the SOLIDWORKS program to our curriculum. SOLIDWORKS offers 3D CAD software tools used globally by engineers, designers, manufacturers, and technology professionals in a wide range of industrial, medical, scientific, consumer, and transportation fields to design and manufacture products. I quickly realized how beneficial this software could be to my students, particularly those interested in manufacturing, engineering, marketing, and design careers, and that I needed to become proficient with this software. I began accessing online tutorials and then attended training to obtain certification as a SOLIDWORKS Accredited Educator. My students were using …show more content…
My students will need to utilize these skills proficiently in higher education as well as the world of work. I attended an Argument Writing Workshop to address these needs. Upon completing the workshop, I created a series of lessons focusing on the real-world issue of immigration. After reading articles highlighting both sides of the issue, students met in small groups to discuss the articles, cite evidence, and identify the rhetorical devices used in each article. Then students wrote an argument essay evaluating two of the articles and the effectiveness of the authors’ use of rhetorical devices. As students participated in small group discussions, I realized they needed to continue to refine their skills in clearly verbalizing their thoughts and supporting their views with relevant and sufficient evidence. In response, I created a series of lessons focusing on Alzheimer’s Disease in which students researched statistics comparing federal funding for Alzheimer’s research to funding of Cancer research, evaluating the pros and cons of using heroic measures to prolong the lives of Alzheimer’s patients, and assess the pros and cons of Alzheimer’s patients being informed of their diagnoses. Then students debated the issue in class. Finally students selected and …show more content…
I realized that this video gave me the perfect opportunity to meet a student need of working on a real-world project with tight deadlines. Each year, students apply for positions on the Senior Video Committee using an application and interview process similar to what they will encounter in the real world. After selection, I involve committee members in the video production process from design to finished product. Students collect pictures; scan, download, and import pictures into the video software; and create the video adding captions as well as music. I teach students to use ProShow Producer, a program used by professional photographers worldwide to create professional video slideshows showcasing their photography and to add an additional merchandise option to their product line. In addition, I teach students to market their product through pre- and post-sales and to distribute their final product with accuracy and
If learning how to successfully convey your point in a disagreement is a subject of interest, Jay Heinrichs wrote this for you. The author of Thank You For Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach us About The Art of Persuasion, Jay Heinrichs, is a speaker and persuasion context strategist, as well as an author. He has had his book published in 12 languages, used in more than 3,000 college courses and is one of the top 10 books assigned at Harvard, all according to his business website. Since they started pouring the concrete for the dam Lake Powell has been a center of controversy. From nature preservationists to ancient ruins advocates the subject has been heated and intense. On the other hand, those who support Lake Powell are just as avid and active in their defense of the reservoir. One of the former, Edward Abbey, sets forth his plea, hoping it does not fall upon deaf ears.
I am able to use evidence to back up my ideas and prove my point. My writing this year has helped me grow in this area. I have learned about the different types of claims, like claim of value, fact, and policy, and different methods of arguing, like induction and deduction. I have used all of these techniques throughout my writing. When I am struggling with a prompt, like for my quotation essay, I look at it like an argument. This helps me make my purpose clear. A good example of my strength of argumentation is my paper on why schools should not have letter grades. In this essay, I used points and evidence to argue my claim. I also used a deductive method, meaning that I started with an observation and worked my way to a conclusion. This allowed me to effectively argue my claim and use evidence to support it. I know that I am good at writing an argumentative piece and I believe that it is my biggest
Students who take English 101 “will learn about rhetoric- about what makes a text persuasive and how writers appeal to their intended audiences” (Rhetorical Choices 2).
Rhetoric should be taught in schools because rhetoric can be used to achieve personal goals, knowing how to identify false rhetoric can help students identify false logic in arguments and students can be disadvantaged to being more prone to use false rhetoric in debate.
Rhetoric taught in schools, aids children to make proper choices to their advantage intellectually. Rhetoric is in everyday life. Every move made comes with a choice of doing or not doing. The choice of doing or not doing is a form of argument within oneself. This form of argument is crucial for flow in life. Heinrichs talks about his experiment on argument with self. (Heinrichs) His experiment illustrated that one can not make choices without argument and pursasiveness. Students should be taught rhetoric in order to make proper choices.
Through college years, I took written rhetoric, oral rhetoric and visual rhetoric but I never think about why do I need to take those classes. Why are those classes be required course in college time? And also what the relationship between those three class?
"The study of rhetoric traditionally has aimed to equip students with an ability to identify problems and issues, to investigate, to interpret, and to communicate results -- whatever the subject matter. These abilities require higher-level thinking, not just skills; analysis and evaluation, not just observation . . . . The study emphasizes strategies and practice rather than a body of facts and contemplation; thus the study of rhetoric aims for social application. Students are studying rhetoric in a technical communication course even though they may never hear of Aristotle nor study history and theory of rhetoric. Identifying a problem, gathering, interpreting, and arranging information,
Harvard does not have specified format of punctuations and capitalization compared with other styles. In Harvard have two ways in assessing information first is through direct quotations and the other one is through paraphrasing.
Rhetoric is all around us—it is everywhere—and people use and tailor rhetoric to benefit them, and the reason they do this is because each person has lived a life filled with struggle, heartbreak, challenges, happiness and bliss. The reason I bring this up is because understanding this will make teaching writing and rhetoric more effective; one of the things I enjoy doing is applying life to teaching because that will make an instructor more relatable. My research interest is heavily based on finding new approaches and strategies to teaching college English effectively that will appeal to a college audience—and I hope to experience this at Oregon State University.
Understanding how to use rhetoric is required for every college student in order for them to write an academic essay. In college writing, many professors wants us, as students, to actually write a college paper, not an informal paper that may be accepted in high school. de the reader feel that we know what we need to write and how to write rhetorical awareness is important for multilingual writer. Because The instructor want us to be able use our own knowledge and demonstrate our own skills while writing. Consequently, the more practice we have, the better we get. As a multilingual writer myself, I often struggle with how to begin an academic paper and how to develop my paper . However, I spend most of my time trying to write and
The advantages of Rhetoric is that it is, (Rhetoric of Teaching and Learning pg 20) “a powerful notion of how we get our thoughts and feelings across to others”. With rhetoric, through participation and practice, students can learn that it is a useful tool, and can enhance one’s communication skills. Understanding what rhetoric is has helped many students, to include myself, how to structure and deliver a clear and persuasive message. What we write, say, and
Rhetoric- although it may seem to be a word of specific meanings and scholarly uses, the true interpretation can have a vast range of purpose and understanding. Though things as simple as talking to your teacher, watching television, or choosing what outfit to wear in the morning all involve rhetoric, most people believe rhetoric can only be found in the world of politics. Despite government being a prime illustration of rhetoric, it can be go far beyond the deliberations of politicians. An Overview of Rhetoric analyzes various scholarly definitions by explaining, “...rhetoric is simply part of who we are as human beings: Every time we express emotions and thoughts to others with the goal of influence, we are engaged in rhetoric” (6). Keeping this idea in mind, I believe rhetoric is more strictly defined as conversation of persuasive actions that do little to advance a factual concept or idea, but is still valuable in sharing thoughts and viewpoints to incline another. Thus, I view rhetoric as a practice that could possibly result in negative action, but still holds value when attempting to influence the viewpoints of others.
When I register for English B50 I had high expectations, I knew there were going to be lots of work involved. Although writing is not my strongest point, especially having too many grammatical errors and the constant use of fragment sentences in my assignments. English is my second language so that’s why I have trouble when writing a complete sentence without any punctuation errors or being a fragment sentence. Not having a solid topic sentence on two of the paragraph assignment is why I did not receive the full fifty points.
Studying rhetoric can improve society because it can help us to be persuasive about the thing we care about in nature. We can learn about nature and other important things by studying all kinds of composition. All of society will benefit if they all learn the to read composition and learn rhetoric.
