Improving Education in America
One of the first issues is that the U.S is 26th in math, 21st in science, and 17th in reading. America leads in many things except the most important education. China, Finland and Korea are way ahead of us when it comes to education. America 's school system ranked fifth in spending. The type of education of a child is one of the factors of their success. Which is one of the areas we need to change. As teachers get their degree they need to be properly trained. Steve Fink from the University of Washington says “We also have to understand that as a nation, we haven 't invested in the training of our educators like we have in training of our doctors and our lawyers. Even in the best education program is going to produce a novice teacher.” This is just one step. There is also another issue that plays a part. That problem is poverty. Which is why you have a disproportionate of rich kids in certain schools and poor kids in others. I think that shouldn 't be a issue at all. If you are fortunate enough to go to a wealthy school then go. Yet that shouldn 't determine if you get a good education or not. Whether you go to a poor or rich school there should not determine the value of education you receive.
Leadership needs to be improved. Teachers today need to be better informed of what quality teaching looks like. If as a society we aren 't teaching how to be effective how can we actually expect the them to be up to par. As
Public education has faced many extreme challenges and obstacles historically. Based on the films I’ve viewed I think the top issues were segregation and poverty. Segregation in schools started in the 1800s and continued until the 1960s. I learned mostly about the problems with segregation in the film A Struggle for Education Equality. In the film, it explains facts and statistics about children and how their lives were like. From around the time period of 1950-1980 schools were very much segregated and only ⅗ of students graduated and 50% of them went to college. The fight for equality in schools began in Topeka Kansas where high schools became integrated. Elementary schools, however, were not integrated and still segregated. The NAACP tried to have 13 parents try to enroll their kids into white school but of course, it failed because of segregation. Linda Brown was one of the children in the experiment and that’s when the Brown v Board of Education of Topeka of 1954 was created which banned the inequality in schools. The southern states still had segregation problems, unfortunately, but the Elementary and Secondary Education Act gave 4 billion dollars of aid to disadvantaged children and around 9 years after that, 91% of southern black children attended integrated schools. Segregation had clearly gotten so much better but was a major problem for a long time in terms of public education. Poverty, in my opinion, is another major problem facing public education today. In
Our educational culture only satisfies a select group of students who are at the top and leaves others behind. These book smart kids deserve to go where they are going, however, what happens to the kids who are not as book smart as others? Many students are having a hard time because they are not book smart even if they may be good at something that is not educational. As stated in Jack Schneider’s article, America’s Not-So-Broken Education System, “The education system simply stopped working. It aged, declined, and broke, but we can fix it by first ripping it apart” (Schneider Par 2). As of now, the education system is very unsupportive of some students and teachers. Backed by the government, public school pay does not support teachers in America while in other countries, being an educator is considered a privilege. By not supporting teachers, it is hard to find educators who are willing to put in the work to help their students. As a result of not having good teachers who are motivated to teach their students, it is also likely that the students that they end up having to teach are also unmotivated as well. In this cycle, some teachers and students gain practically nothing from going to school, which demonstrates the broken education system that we have at this time. The ever aging education system is not up to date with either
If the problem is with teachers that do not value or wish the best for the students before them, then we need to stop that. If the problem is inequitable funding within and between school districts we need to correct that. If the problem is in the homes and hearts of the students themselves then we need to address that. Whatever it is, we cannot do nothing and scratch on heads as the current statistics continue to rise.
The United States used to be ranked higher amongst other countries when came to education. People came from all over the world to study here. Unfortunately, for the past years it have been ranked in the twenties amongst other countries based on standardized testing. Now its time to revamp our education system, but the question is where we should we look. Based on student performance, the only countries that have proven that most components of their system works is Finland and Korea; Finland being ranked one and Korea ranked two. In order for the U.S. education system to move in a positive direction we must make significant changes in the structure of our system. First we need to raise the qualifications for becoming a teacher because in some states you don’t even have to attend and educational school; all you have to do is pass a test. Secondly, we need to expand the time of school so that teachers have more time to teach the kids and the students can have more interaction with the teachers. Although this is where we need to look, we don’t need to adopt their entire system.
What is it that’s making our country suffer from excelling in education? Very few would argue about the importance of our education system today. Issues such as lazy teachers, lack of parent involvement, and teaching useless information in class may hinder progress in today’s education system. An education plays a crucial role and is an essential tool, unfortunately, with all the jaded judgments; our students are not able to value their education. A proper education can open the doors to many opportunities that would have never been possible if it had not been for the knowledge and preparation that one received while in school. With the growing economy and desperate times, it is more important than ever for our country’s children to receive the proper education and training that is needed to allow them to acquire a good job and produce the revenue needed to live. Today's education system is flawed in many ways, and these flaws should be eliminated to ensure a good education for our future generation.
One big question is in store when someone thinks of American Education: how can we make it great? The movie Dead Poet Society displays some of the flaws of American Education and how one teacher changed the view of education for many students. Education in America has become a big discussion today especially regarding how it should or shouldn't be taught, whether students are actually getting something out of their education, or if they are going to school just to be there. The system needs to start finding better ways to teach the curriculum, such as not teaching the material straight out of the book or just a lecture, making sure teachers do a better job of connecting with each student, or making students feel more comfortable in school
In America, there is a lot of money that goes towards education but some school districts get more money than other school districts. America spends the most on education than any other country but they are not distributing the money the right way. Money is not only the problem with education but the gap between
We live in a country where an educational requirement should be learn about foreign cultures and to be conversant in different languages because of the high percentage of immigration to United States. In the article: “How To Bring Our School Into The 21st Century” the authors talk more about how to improve different types of things, i.e to modernize, improve book to make them shorter but with value content and among other things. Among the different point of view of the authors knowing more about the world helps prepare young people for college studies, international experience, and active participation in civic life. I believe this is really important because United States have a lot of diversity in languages and cultures and is kind of important
The tax dollars are at work, but for whom, when it comes to education. Some can say, they do not think that their child is getting the best education, they can get from their school district. There is inequity in education because we are still divided, we have various advisory boards for the different races at school such as ELA (English learner Advisory) AAPA (African American Parent Advisory). It should be just a parent advisory in order for everybody to have the same learning achievement. As for inequality in education that is depending on the area, the school is located, I do not see the schools in the upper-class neighborhood complaining that their kids are not getting the best education. The negative consequences of this social problem are that there are children being left behind, retention in grades, suspension, and expulsion (Musu-Gillette, Robinson, McFarland, KewalRamani, Zhang, & Wilkinson-Flicker, 2016). The importance of changing this problem is so we can make sure our children are ready to lead the country when the time comes and make the best decision for us all as it relates our nation and politics. The equity in education is a problem and it needs to be changed through prevention measures, society, and reform.
"The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don't tell you what to see." -Alexandra K. Trenfor. Honestly, at this point in life I feel like our public education system has been designed to fail students. Teachers don't have the power to teach children lesson on life anymore. We have to teach children to copy-and-paste and learn to regurgitate answers to pass a standardized test that doesn't even properly display how much a child as excelled. Children are going to be illiterate if they're not taught properly. They'll never be able to know how to deal with real world problems or survive financially with how the education system is right now.
Teachers should take students under their wing and really try to show you what it is they are trying to teach you and work with our learning styles and interests. Teachers have to be more open-minded and love engaging with kids. The best teachers are the ones who takes the different learning styles and puts them together for every lesson so that no child is left behind. Supportive teachers are those who put in the extra time to make sure that all students are comfortable in their classroom. The way a teacher is interacting with a student has become less sensitive every year. I believe that the government is causing this desensitization. Teachers aren’t getting paid enough so teachers are getting frustrated and caring less and it is taking a hit on our students in America. Teachers have to really get to know the child for who they are rather than just another regular student. For all these things a teacher must want to be in the classroom and enjoy being with her students. If the teachers are not being recognized properly by the government this can make teachers give up.
In an effort to gain some perspective and increase my knowledge I recently began reading a book by Dana Goldstein, The teacher wars: a history of America 's most embattled profession. Goldstein (2014) documents the unenviable role of teachers throughout our history and discusses the demands placed on teacher during periods of reform. Goldstein (2014) also points out the contradictory perception of teachers as they are “attacked and admired in equal proportions.” (p. 5) Goldstein (2014) discusses the politics at play and how teachers are often characterized as parasitic and a drain on resources during reform attempts. However, Goldstein (2014) much like Zeus (2014) suggests the ideological issues associated with race and poverty need to be recognized in order to foster effective reform. In essence, there are many positive and negatives aspects of any reform. In regards to the Common Core I am interested in finding out if standardization will in fact; produce equitable educational outcomes along socioeconomic lines. This is something that only time and subsequent research will tell.
Education is the reason the world is filled with doctors, lawyers, policemen, accountants, and all the other occupations that fuel modern society. In 1330, only five percent of the English population was capable of reading and writing (Simkin). By 1500, sixty-four Universities had been established in Europe (McKitterick 152). William I, Duke of Normandy, gained control over England after he conquered Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Very few English citizens were educated at the time; the only people who possessed academic knowledge were part of the church. Medieval England developed at a rapid pace. Due to this growth, the need for education was urgent (Trueman). One can better understand the role of education by examining its historical roots.
In the 21st Century, the school system must change in order for students to build the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the future world that is changing rapidly. In an interview with the Deputy Superintendent of the Peace River School Division, Karen Penney, it was learned that the top leaders of school divisions do not necessarily agree that education needs major systemic change but have focused their efforts on smaller changes within schools, with teachers and school leaders. She does, however, recognize that a shift has to occur in how leaders manage schools and that the focus of education needs to be on skills rather than knowledge acquisition.
Teaching and learning in the 21st century are developing learning, skills and knowledge for pupils in today's world. In addition, comparing the difference to the 20th century. Therefore, reflecting on your own educational experience, while looking at influences of change in education, Globalisation and Social Change. Discussing the benefits of change in the curriculum and diversity. However, challenges of entering the workforce and accessing technology.
