She writes a Christmas story for a contest and incorporates parts of her life at the DeRosiers. As a result her teachers believe her and at spring break, she is transferred to St. Bernadette's Academy to finish school. Chapter 7 Cheryl is at this point living with a foster family called the Steindalls. April went there over holidays while she was attending St. Bernadette's Academy. While April was attending St. Bernadette's Academy, she told one really big lie. She was still looking down on her heritage and she told all her friends there that her parents had died in a plane crash and that they were no longer living. One summer, April opted to go get a job in Winnipeg instead of spending time with Cheryl. She got introduced to the night life and some other elements of that type of living. Cheryl was slightly offended and disappointed that April didn't come to see her. At the end of this Chapter, April finally becomes free and she moves into her own apartment in Winnipeg. Once Lily accepts what she has done and learns that her mother's death did not make her a bad person, her conflict can finally be resolved. As a result of resolving her conflict, she is able to mature because of the struggle, just like other people are able to grow and evolve from their own mistakes. This is evident when she admits "Before coming here, my whole life had been nothing but a hole where my mother should have been, and this hole had made me different, left me always aching for something, but never once did I think what he'd lost or how it might've changed him" (Kidd 293). When lily went to South Carolina she goes to a lady named August. August is very artifice. Lily stays at her honey house for several months with her aunt Rooselyn. As she lives there she goes through many adventures and meets a ton of new people. She meets her true love Zach and two sister of August named May and June. She finds out a lot about her mother. She finds out that her mother Deborah stayed at the same honey house. She also finds out that her mother ran away from T-Ray when he was abusive. At the end T-Ray finds Lily at Augusts house and he threatens her that she has to come back home with him. Lily fights and eventually convinces T-Ray that she is better off with August and forgives him.
John Pear asked Katy to sit on the front seat with Mary Lee, Katy refused at first because she was scared that if she gets out of the car, John Pear might drive away and leave her alone. After John Pear told Katy that he wont do what she's afraid of, Katy finally left the car, but right after she closed the door, John Pear locked the door and drove away. This is complete darkness because it is showing the readers that she is going in blindly and is going with the flow. On page 92, August compares the world to bees by saying that the world was just "one big bee yard" What deflated April was when she wanted to get an ice cream cone and read cartoons like the white kids, but the store owner told her she couldn't. The real thing that deflated her though was when she realized she was not going to be treated equally and that life wasn't fair. If Lily had a wailing wall, some of the things she would put were: shooting her mom, her abusive father, not having anybody to talk to, no friends, wasn't popular, didn't have any nice clothes, never got gifts on her birthday or any holiday and that her father didn't let her write.
Mrs.Henry and Ruby stayed in her classroom all day because she couldn’t go to lunch or recess with the other students. If she had to go to the restrooms the Marshals had to help her down the hall to make sure she was safe. The Marshals walked Ruby everywhere home, to school, to the bathroom, everywhere and always by her side. By the end of the winter break, she was stressed out she had to see Dr. Robert Coles she saw him once a week either at her school or at her home.

She is also a wealthy, influential older woman who is well respected throughout the town. But, because of her adolescence, Mary did not know the underlying effects of telling the lie to such a powerful person within the community. Mary does not realize that her actions have given Mrs. Tilford the power to ruin the school, the women’s reputations, and most importantly their lives. Although Karen and Martha never committed the act they were accused of, the lie spreads all over the town and ultimately results in the closing of the school and ruining their lives.
Eight years later George and Chapel gave birth to another daughter Barbara Cothren. Imogene and Barbara were close growing up.
