In my short life span of seventeen years there have been more global issues that have arisen than in the last 50 years all together. The world is becoming more technologically advanced and people are starting to ask questions and really focus on the problems not only occurring in present time, but also that may occur down the road. In today’s society people are becoming more interested in the world and are becoming more educated. Schools are now starting to form global issues classes and helping students become more involved and intellectual. I believe Honors College at Auburn University should focus on todays problems to help students become critical thinkers and help them to broaden their horizons and become more open minded to all …show more content…
I want to be able to look at problems similar to that one, or even problems on a much smaller scale and be able to think of new and inventive ways to solve them. I also except Honors College to be able to explain to me why these problems are occurring and how our world has come to this point. I would like to be able to know why the United States is in such debt and how it rose to seventeen trillion dollars in such a short time. I want to be able to know why, so I can think of possible solutions and ways to cut government spending. Our national debt is a huge issue for me because my generation is going to be the start of who is paying it back. In America, debt is one of the biggest problems our government is facing right now, but it also is effecting other countries just as severely. I believe that we must learn why these problems are occurring to be able to fully comprehend the situation and to be able to have any chance of fixing it. So many problems are starting to surface and there are new threats everyday. Specifically in America, terrorism is the problem that I worry about most. In my lifetime i have seen more cruel acts of terrorism than my parents have ever seen in their past fifty years. This can only make me think if we can not find a solution to this or any other problem now, what struggles are my own children going to face and what will it be like for them in 30 years. Honors College should help me see these bigger pictures and be able to
My parents have taught me getting a college degree will be my way out of struggling with finances. A college degree is something that no one can take away from me. I want to be able to help my family and community to be more financially stable by helping them learn how to increase their wealth. The next reason why is for young girls who live in small foreign countries outside of the United States and do not have the opportunity to get an education. I am doing it for them because they are not given the chance too. Another reason that I am pursuing an
Education these days is vital for many job titles. It can become difficult for many people to receive a job without a high school and especially a college education. Most jobs in America, from sales manager to registered nurse and even a construction worker in some cases, require an education past high school. With the cost of college, at average ten thousand dollars at state schools, not accounting for living quarters or even meals, it is leaving many students in large overbearing debt. Many have looked for the solution of this strenuous debt and one of their solution is to make the first two years debt free. By making the first two years of college debt free, it would encourage more people to attend college, expand the educational horizons of our nation, increase employment rates of America, and it could be done without causing a larger debt on America.
As a high school senior, post high school options are far and few, but the one that shines above the others is the option of attending college. Instead of going straight into the workforce in order to establish some sort of independence, college provides the opportunity to build upon academic skills, gain a step up in terms of work experience, and become more acquainted with the world and adult life without a watchful parent. It is a very impactful experience that can alter the path taken in life but it comes with a very high price, one that many aren’t able to pay and in turn are forced into tens of thousands of dollars in debt. However, the individuals in debt that did graduate have received something that to most of them was all worth it, a degree. With this, they have opened up more paths in life and immediately are more welcomed in the workforce.
This memo offers a solution to help increase the percentage of the college education of our younger generation. This proposal below is motivated by the experiences of college students who are overwhelmed by the student debt they have collected over the past few years and still have not yet graduated. This is due to either difficulty navigating college from lack of exposure and resources to even properly begin the process of attending college causing inadequate preparation, and/or for those who have had a problem with finding a balance between handling school work and families all at one time. This proposal should not only help students with student debt and aid students in completing higher education but it will also bring light how the nation has been and is still currently going through a college completion crisis.
The first thing I think of when I think of a University degree, is success and how proud my family will be of me. To me personally a degree means a lot. A college degree means success and the fact I made it through 4 years of college. When I was younger I never thought I would be successful in college, I never had the best grades or the drive to homework and assignments, as I went through high school I knew I needed to go onto the next level and further my education. I knew if I didn’t I would disappoint many people in my family, which is one of the main things I never want to do. A degree would show everyone I was able to stick to something without quitting and better my life for the future. A degree to me personally gives me a challenge I want to overcome and accomplish, I don’t want to just accomplish this for my mom or the rest of the family but I want to show myself I was able to do it. A degree would be a huge accomplishment and it’s something I will get no
Robin Wilson had quite a compelling article, showing the potential contrast with the debt vs. the quality of life and stability a degree can provide. Wilson overall points show that the American dream we are all striving for has changed. She is able to demonstrate this through the use of several anecdotes. Wilson interviews with various professionals to see how they use these degrees to better themselves. In doing so she highlights various pros and cons of having a college education vs. the amount of debt they are now responsible for.
There are enough people in debt today who have big dreams and goals and are trying to work hard to achieve them, with such a simple thing as money standing in their way. It can be as easy as a five minute break during one class period in a 180 day school year to inform students about how to rescue their futures from the impending doom they may face. Education is important, no matter what it pertains to, and
College is where you go to get higher sources of education. Many high school students dream of attending college in order to attain more knowledge, yet so many people fail to realize the cost of college. Attending college, currently, is nearly impossible to do without being in some sort of financial debt or seeking out government help. According to the American Association of University Professors, “two-thirds of American college students graduate with substantial debt, averaging nearly $30,000 (if one includes charge cards) in 2008 and rising.” (AAUP, 2012) Although going to college is beneficial, there is an argument on whether or not going to college is worth the possible debt incurred. The goal
Most people would agree that getting a degree would make life easier as opposed to ending education with a high school diploma. With the shortage of career opportunities, jobs are becoming more competitive and most require higher education. College has become necessary and so consequently, it has become more expensive. While loans have made it possible for nearly anyone to attend college, because they are given too easily, the costs of college has increased even more. A cycle of giving loans and raising tuition is created and as a result college students are burdened with a colossal amount of debt. The issues of student debt go beyond affecting graduates’ lives and begin to cripple many areas of the economy, as well as hinder forward mobility.
Student debt has become a large (and growing) problem. The high levels of student debt have served to perpetuate economic inequality, minimizing the opportunity of higher education. In a speech this year, President Obama called higher education "one of the crown jewels of this country" and said it was "the single most important way to get ahead.” The long term impact of student loans have given students every reason not to want to attend college, including myself. That alone has the potential to harm colleges and universities across the country. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said student debt is one reason that people between the ages of twenty and thirty seem to be living a prolonged adolescence, or living with their parents.
In the year 2007, 18.2 million students enrolled into college. About thirty-nine percent of those students were between the ages of eighteen to twenty-four (Marcus). College is seen as something one must do to be able to have a successful life or career. Student debt is almost guaranteed for anyone that goes into college. Seventy percent of bachelor's degree recipients graduate with student debt. Student loans in just the U.S. alone are up to 1.2 trillion dollars, this is the second highest level of consumer debt, just trailing behind mortgages (Snyder). Student debt has been an issue for anyone thinking about going into, that is attending, and graduating or leaving college. How to solve this issue is very simple, which is to save money, lower
I have always felt the need to succeed in school to help me achieve my life goals. The Honors College helps me with this by offering classes that are meant to challenge me and allow me to reach a greater potential. Not only are the classes challenging, but they are offered in a wide variety of subjects so that I can challenge myself in multiple aspects of my education. By studying subjects outside my field of study, I am able to become a more well-rounded, informed citizen. This then allows me to better contribute to society and affect the lives of the people around me. The honors classes are also a wonderful opportunity to really focus on a topic and be able to get more help because the classes are smaller. Going to a large college, it is
Time after time you hear about going to college; whether at work, family, friends, and even when you are in high school you might have been repeatedly told of how it can benefit you in the long run in regards to your future. They say a good education can take you far in life. Students in high school may still question the importance of a college education. In the world of today people find themselves asking, “Why is it important to go to college?” An important aspect of succeeding in today’s world is getting a better education, and it’s much more than just a degree - in college you also learn how to better prepare for assignments, perhaps one of the most important things you can get out of attending
I would create a class of “Global Solve” in college. As suggested by the title, students will solve global scale problems that may arise in the near future. Examples of such problems include genetic engineering and the rise of genetically engineered human beings. Students will first research the topic to great depths and understand the root of potential problems rather than the symptoms of the problem. The students will then attempt find a realistic solution to the problem taking into consideration external factors excluding but not limited to economy, environment and political relations. Grading will occur based on originality and realism of ideas.
High school students are often stressed how important college is and how vital it will be for their future, but students often wonder if the thousands of dollars spent to further their education is worth it. According to the New York Times, “Student debt, meanwhile, has topped $1 trillion” (Leonhardt, 2014). Having that much in student debts, often questions individuals attend college or to join the work force right out of college. There are a lot of advantages of attending college as well as disadvantages of attending college. As an individual, you have to be the one to decide if it will be worth it or not. Some may view it is not worth all the debt in the long run, whereas some think it is worth every penny in the end. I have always had strong values when it came to education, therefore I think college is worth every penny.
