In 1492 native Americans discovered illegal immigrants invading their country. It has been a downhill fight for natives ever since. As more settlers arrived on the East Coast, an attitude became prevalent within the European communities that it was their right to expand cities across America in the name of progress and economic development. The manifest destiny was more of a feeling rather than a written statement which lasted from the War of 1812 to the beginning of the American Civil War. The idea of expansion grew, especially by those who wanted to capitalize on agriculture in the United States. Native Americans occupied land in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee. These lands became more valuable to the white settlers as the production of cotton became more popular in the South. As the idea of a manifest destiny grew, so did the idea to remove Natives, which led up to the “Trail of Tears” through the Indian Removal Act of 1830, a final solution to the Indian problem. The United States government removed the five civilized Tribes, Cherokee, Muskogee, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations between 1830 and 1838. The Native Americans being relocated suffered from inhuman conditions such as disease and starvation while traveling to their final destination, a designated area west of the Mississippi River. When the Indian Removal act of 1830 was enacted, the Cherokee Nation panicked. The Cherokee, specifically the romanticized Tsali, did their best to preserve their culture in the mountains of North Carolina, but what really saved them from their harsh fate that so many other Cherokee faced, was there white chief, William Holland Thomas. The Cherokee were “disagreeable and dangerous neighbors,” but they had a powerful ally in Raleigh, who saved the Eastern Band from a much harsher fate. The Eastern Band, with a strong helping hand from William Thomas, proved themselves not only in war or battle circumstances, but also in a social stance as well.

All the Indian tribes except one did not fight and if they did they died. That one tribe who did fight was the Cherokee, and they fought with law. They won but Jackson didn't care and said basically that the Cherokee have law while he has a army. So Andrew forced the Cherokee off their land and moved them 1200 miles to Oklahoma. 20% people died out of 20000 which were the old and the sick and injured. The other thing is that the Cherokee made a Treaty where they were equal to white people which was called the Treaty of Echota, which Jackson completely ignored. The Cherokee were way much more civilized than any other tribe.

Disease, weather, starvation and other adversities took an extreme toll on the tribes. It is estimated that approximately 4,000 Cherokee alone died as a result of the removal, however the number could be as high as 8,000.3 Unfortunately, the hardship did not end once the tribe arrived to the Indian Territory.
