What makes a person their own individual is a question that can be deeply contemplated. The reached conclusion is generally a combination of the person’s experiences, thoughts, feelings, and goals. Even though this may seem like a simple answer to this inquiry the solution to a person’s individuality is much more complicated. When asked to attempt to explain who I am on a piece of paper it required some inward thought. In order to best describe myself, I will attempt to highlight some important experiences, my thoughts and feelings throughout aforementioned experiences, and my overall goals in life. The summer of my eleventh grade year I was selected to attend a National Youth Leadership Convention in Washington D.C. Even though I was nervous …show more content…
During this vacation we traveled to Honduras, Belize, and Mexico. While there we tried many exciting activities, like cave tubing, and got to experience different cultures. One of the main things that stood out to me while we were in different countries was how drastically different our lives are in the United States compared to those of some other countries. Things that we take for granted in the U.S. some people in other countries work extremely hard to receive. For example, while my family and I were in Honduras we were on a boat coming back from snorkeling and this little kid jumped in the water and swam towards the boat. One of the guides on the boat threw a bottle of Pepsi in the water and the little kid was so happy. Even though Pepsi isn’t needed to sustain life I found it eye opening that the little kid would want the soda so badly that he thought it necessary to swim towards the boat. Most people in America would not feel it necessary to do such a thing. Seeing this solidified the fact that I am extremely lucky to be who I am and that I grew up needing and wanting …show more content…
I care for my family deeply and would do absolutely anything for them. From the time I was little I have always had a close relationship with my family. They have always loved and supported me. It is through their belief in me and their urge for me to strive to be the best that I can be that I have always had the courage and the ability to pursue my goals. With their encouragement I have allowed myself to be fairly ambitious throughout my life. I have had multiple leadership positions in clubs, tried many sports, and successfully balanced school work and social activities. Currently my list of goals includes spending as much time with my family as I can when I get home on college breaks, joining many clubs, making lots of friends, learning as much as possible, and becoming an extremely successful pharmacist. Following through on these goals, as well as others I did not mention, will allow me to continue to develop as a kind, happy, and smart
When my family and I got to the houses where the families were living I noticed that everyone was overjoyed to see us. This put a smile on my face, I didn't understand how people with so little could be so happy. As we gave them our clothes and candy they almost started crying with joy and thankfulness. Kids started sharing their candy with other kids and some didn't even keep any for themselves. People with absolutely nothing were sharing what they had for the happiness of others. This made me realize how lucky I was to have the life I have and to never take anything for granted. I learned from these kids to always give to others and treat others how you'd like to be treated. This trip to Mexico helped me realize that one small act of kindness could make someone's day, year, or even
Born in Haiti, I came to The United States at the age of six. Barely speaking English, I overcame a new environment and a language barrier, therefore, years later graduated as a top ten student in High School. Adapting to a new country was challenging , especially, coming from a place that does not have everyday essentials such as electricity, food, and water. Living in the United States made me realize how fortunate and bless I am to have everyday essentials when numerous people spend their day not having them.
Individuality is the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked. Out of the seven billion people in the world, not two are exactly the same. Everyone has things they are recognized for, and things that are hidden from the world. In Dead Poets Society, John Keating states, “that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse (Peter Weir).” I am my know individual and I know how I am going to contribute. I know me like on one else does, I am creative, I am caring, I am a perfectionist, I am sweet, and I see my life the way I want to see it. As everyday goes on you want your memories to be music to your ears. Live life with the idea of carpe diem and you will be satisfied at the end of the day.
We as a society have been presented with the question of whether or not individual action is a valid solution in the midst of the debate on “environmentalism.” Can we as individuals still contribute to reducing climate change with individual action such as riding a bike? In the article “Individualization: Plant a Tree, Buy a Bike, Save the world, the author Michael F. Maniates analyzes this question in regards to individuals participating in green consumerism. In response to the growing trend of green consumerism companies have started producing “green” products in order to keep up with consumer demand. On the surface this seems like a step forward to a sustainable future, however “green” products like to advertise their “eco-friendliness”
In the 6th grade I was nominated as one of a few kids in Broward County to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference Envision Program in Washington D.C. That
Individuality is a common thing throughout everyday life, but some people don't agree with it. Why is that? Author Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” I truly agree with what Emerson said. Everyone has independence to be themselves, standing out in competition and innovation.

My family represents my world. Both of my parents have been there to support and guide me especially in the difficult times of my health. At the age of three, I was diagnosed with scleroderma, which has made life goals more difficult to accomplish. My parents have also sacrificed work time and career plans to attend doctor visits and provide me with all the extra medical care. At school I have grown into a strong person who can multitask because I had to stay extra hours to complete missing work. One of my goals is to attend a university and earn a degree that will allow me to help others such as in medicine, law, or business.
The way of thinking and the lifestyle people live is greatly influenced by the place they were raised or the environment they live in. People feel like they are forced to think just like the people around them. If the society a person resides in has a high standard of living, the person is forced to have his/her high standard of living or else he/she will be ignored in the public eye, or even in their own family. There have been many novels written about how when a person moves into a new environment it influences’ the way they think and the feel like they aren’t normal so they cope and adjust to fit the standard of the people around them, which sometimes
The hashtag that I have created exemplifies the ideas of individualism and rejection of traditional establishment. It emphasises American society’s notion of living as an individual and achieving one’s dreams against the odds. That in today’s society each person has the inherent right to control their reality living how they see fit and seeing the world in their own way. Furthermore, each person has the power within themselves to attain what they seek and it is only a matter of their self-intuition that holds them back from reaching their goals. I posted my hashtag on my Snapchat story, displaying to my friends the role transcendentalism plays within my life. That just like me, they too can control their reality and strive to new heights of
In our society, individualism plays a key part in our development and as a society we place high value on independence and autonomy. From the beginning, we’ve established that ethnicity and culture are valued in influencing how people think and make decisions, and due to this it may also define how ethnic groups express a healthy relationship. One such example is in Asian Americans a self-focused individual could be perceived as less desired and someone who is more concerned for the collective group or community is prized.
Individualists come from all around the world. Writing poetry, and books, and other types of literature. But they don't have to be authors to be an individualist, along with any other chosen career. Other individuals like myself describe themselves as individualist through variations of optimistic perspectives. We all differentiate each other, we have different personalities and different career choices. By reinforcing the values of difference, personality and career choices, some of the greatest authors have helped shape our american individualism.
In David Brooks’ article, If It Feels Right…, the concept of moral individualism is manifested through Christian Smith’s study about young people’s moral lives. As one adult interprets the idea, “I mean, I guess what makes something right is how I feel about it. But different people feel different ways, so I couldn't speak on behalf of anyone else as to what’s right and wrong.” In other words, moral individualism refers to doing what feels right, rather than what seems right to an outsider. In Adam Curtis’ documentary, The Century of the Self, Edward Bernays manipulated the public into purchasing consumer goods, persuading women that cigarettes were a symbol of freedom and male power. Before Bernays’ new political idea of controlling masses,
Humans are designed to cultivate both individualism and collectivism – let me explain. Both are good if used appropriately. The problem is when either is used exclusively, to the abandonment of the other. As individuals, humans are expected to grow and mature; a person accepts Christ individually. On the Day of Judgment, humans will be held to account for their actions and behaviors individually. It is this aspect of individualism that is an inherent part of a healthy person, and it is what God intended to be the case. Jonathan Kim in the Estep textbook refers to the “I-consciousness” to refer to the individual aspect of faith. The extreme use of
What is it that makes me, well, me? I mean, isn't that the fundamental question to human life? Isn’t that we write books, movies and songs about, or why we turn to faith, or what we grapple with while sitting in traffic on Tuesdays? I have such difficulty answering this question because this answer is made up of so many parts that my brain answers the question a million different ways before I can even articulate just one. That million-answers-for-one-question is a unique quality that does make me myself, Sarah.
