The first colonists that founded our country were dominated by white folks. In today’s America , there are too many cultures to name. Diversity is essential to our nation’s society. Diversity is essential for our country being what it is known for today. While some people believe that uniformity and conformity are encouraged more, it can be argued that diversity and individuality are encouraged because people resist assimilation and people are encouraged for their differences.
In the last few decades, people have started to resist assimilation. For instance, Eric Liu says, “America is white not longer, and it will never be again” (Source 2). Instead of being all white, people of other cultures or ethnicities know what they are and do not try to fit in with the crowd. Additionally, one can see how the rejection is happening in schools. One can see that “bilingual schooling was popularized in the seventies, that decade when middle-class ethics began to resist the process of assimilation” (Source 3). The rejection has been happening because people want to. People do not want to conform to just one culture, but learn about the different cultures that are before them.

Bilinguists have said this by “insist[ing] that a student should be reminded of his differences from others in mass society” (Source 3). Allowing other students to know about other cultures or languages to help other know they are different but not for a bad reason. Students are willing to accept who they are without thinking that something is different about them. Rodrigues says “full individuality is achieved, paradoxically, by those who are able to consider themselves members of the crowd”(Source 3). Some might say they have to fit in first, but they do eventually gain individuality. They gain this individuality through their discovery with others and how they compare with other
Television still doesn’t completely represent the diversity in America. Roughly three-quarters of film actors were white in 2014. There was only 12.5% African American, 5.3% Asian, and 4.9% Hispanic actors while there was 73.1% white actors. Studies also show the majority of actors are male. According to the annual 100 top grossing films 2007-2014 only 30.2% of speaking or named characters were women, while 73.1% were male whites.

The United States of America is a perfect example of cultural diversity. Starting with the Mayflower landing in Massachusetts Bay in 1620, to the Great Migration from 1915 to 1930, to the continual immigration into our country today this country has seen its culture grow and reshape itself over the years. The culture of the United States is diverse but understanding and appreciating various cultures does not always exist within today’s classroom or in today’s society. Understanding or even defining cultural diversity , identifying the challenges cultural diversity brings, or how to face cultural diversity are all issues educators face in today’s classroom.
To begin my personal informative essay on diversity in the United States, I would like to point out what information has had the most influence on how I better understand and relate to others different from how I did in the past. I do not feel as though this class taught me any more than I already know about other races and ethnicities, in terms of, how their ancestors came to America, or what hardships particular racial or ethnical groups have grown through in the group’s history in the United States. What I do feel like this class has done for me is, put into prospective of how often and frequent prejudice and
You made some very valid point in your discussion. This country was founded on social and economic diversity in which it does tend to categorize everyone into a certain group to feel a sense of validation of whom they believe they are or should be. European Americans did this categorization as a means to ensure that society will embrace them as the superior race and blacks and Indians as the inferior race. This segregation of humanity was denoted as “high” and “lower” class groups that became interconnected within the social and racial institution. Additionally, these distinctions such as skin color differences in America today are thought to explain perceived differences in intellectual, physical and artistic temperaments and to justify the
Throughout the world social problems such as illiterate, elderly, handicapped, minority groups, and poverty have been the biggest part in our society for many years. Some of our social problems had died off, meanwhile, they’re still many problem that we are still facing as a society. One of the major social problem we face is people being illiterate. Being illiterate is meaning a person can not read nor write, and it can also mean that a person is grammatically incorrect. There is as much as 23% of the adult population that are ignorant to basic skills of the 4th grade level. In the U.S. the ethnic group that is most affected by not being able to read or write is
"As a Texan, I have known many immigrant's families, mainly from Mexico, and I've seen what they add to our country. They bring to America the values of faith in God, love of family, hard work, and self-reliance; the values that made us a great nation to begin with (Ortiz)". One of our great president, George W. Bush, said these enhancing words and it now concerns me in this day of time. That now the world wants to imprison the Hispanic culture all for varies stereotypes. With President Trump theory of the wall this will cause many more issues not only with Hispanic immigrates but within America itself. Without the construction of the wall, America wouldn’t be wasting money, it will keep generating diversity and wall wouldn’t go against our founding father's rules and regulations.
“Diversity is about all of us.” Diversity is what joins us all together as a whole. It is what makes up the world. It can have a positive effect on a group.
Diversity is a very broad discussion today, it can range from race, gender, sexuality, political or religious views, or even mental disorders. In America, which is basically a melting pot of different cultures in itself seems to struggle with diversity in the one place it really shouldn’t, tv and movies. But how could the entertainment industry affect the way we view others? Simple, through representation. Representation is the act of showing off a particular group of people. Through this, the characters that belong to these groups, cultures or lifestyles act as representatives that show off how they interact with the world. This could be someones first time seeing how a person of a different race, sexuality, or religious/political views and however they are portrayed could become someone’s psychological alignment
For decades immigrants had assimilated to the American society, something that had keep the ever-changing American community together. However perhaps assimilating isn’t always the answer as various individuals fight against the American traditions and stereotypes and exceed the expectation of their minority groups. Even within minorities there is a type of peer pressure to assimilate to the American ways. In How to Tame a Wild Tongue by Gloria Anzaldua. The author explains that identity is intertwined by the way people speak.
Something that I learned in this course that I saw in the video is that these people are mentally strong in the face of adversity in America. For example, although the man named Joseph, who has been laid out from work several times, his kitchen was set on fire, stabbed, and hit by a car, his response was surprisingly dull. There's also a guy who has trouble sleeping because of nightmares. However, compared to the things they've been through before going to America, things like that were probably really upsetting at most but not enough to shake them as survivors that has seen and experienced much more than that. For me as well, what stood out as significant is when Joseph videoconferencing with his mother who both thought they were dead and
Diversity exists all across the United States. It is defined as the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary. Along with the ever-growing diversity in America, brings along intercultural communication. Intercultural communication can be defined as a situated communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural origins. Due to the limitless amounts of diversity and intercultural communication across the United States, misunderstandings and clashes between cultures are bound to occur. These clashes have been as extreme to be used to explain violence and crime not only in the United States, but also throughout our entire nation. On the other end, these cultural clashes can be so personal in our everyday lives because of our expectations of a certain behavior coming from our own cultural backgrounds, as many others have very different cultural backgrounds and expectations of us.
He didn’t know until it had happened. His arm was completely trapped under a rock that had tumbled down after he fell through the crevasse. He was standing on a stable enough ledge, but his arm incapacitated his movement, and he could feel the blooding dripping down his forehead from a gash he received during the fall. Thankfully, he still had his backpack on, but since his arm was immobilized under the rock, he knew he had to cut the backpack off his body. He pulled out his water bottle; it was only half full. The camera he took on his hikes was still intact and working, and he had many tools in his backpack that could be useful: a Swiss army knife, some rope, and a couple of granola bars. He was still in shock and the pain had not yet reached
Diversity is very visible in the schools within the United States. When you enter most classrooms you see students from different nationalities. As the immigrant population continues to grow in the U.S., teachers need to make sure they take everyone’s culture into consideration when teaching. It is important for teachers to create an atmosphere where all cultures are recognized and respected. Teachers should ensure to use culturally responsive practices in order to be able to engage all the student and their families, despite where they come from.
So, why do we need diversity? As America grows, the differences in cultures among individuals become colossal. People are becoming closed-minded about others who are disparate from themselves,
