In recent years, there has been a surge of parents who refuse to vaccinate themselves and their children. However, this can be incredibly dangerous and lethal if this new age trend continues to spread. Vaccines are a weakened version of the stronger disease, and should be mandatory for all ages including infants, young children, and young adults.
One highlighted disease that is preventable is influenza. “In the united states alone the range between 5 % to 20 % of the population will be infected by influenza. Influenza will mainly infect preschool and school aged children” (Piedra, Pedro A). Some might say “How does that affect my child, my genes are very strong and so will my baby.”(AsapSCIENCE). Although ones genes may be strong, vaccines are the reason why they are not infected by

Moreover, a preventable disease such as four strands of HPV can be prevented. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that, if not treated with the vaccination, “HPV infection is a major cause of oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the base of the tongue, the tonsils, and the walls of the pharynx.” (Dana-Farber). The fact that a simple two second vaccination can prevent something as serious and deadly as cancer should be more than enough for anti-vaccinators to open their eyes. However, parents argue that vaccines hold harmful chemicals and, although they do, the dosage of any chemical in a vaccine is not harmful. “Chemical doses in vaccines are negligible. For example, vaccines that include aluminum, which are included to make the vaccine more effective, contain 0.152 milligrams per dose. The average person actually takes in an estimated 30 to 50 milligrams through food and drink. Way more than one vaccination on a daily basis.” (AsapSCIENCE). Although to some it may be hard to believe, the government would not allow an invention meant to save lives, take them away. Some parents give the argument “What is the true purpose of vaccines and how
Hi my name is Marah and today I am going to persuade you to get a Flu vaccination. I recently got a job working at Walgreens Pharmacy. Every day that I work I see people coming in to pick up their prescriptions that don’t look like the feel very great, with a tissue in one hand and their money in the other. No one wants to be sick, it’s not fun and it makes you feel like crap and you get absolutely nothing done. So it would only make sense if everyone was taking the precautionary measure in getting a flu shot. People should be lining up to get their vaccinations in order to prevent them from them getting sick and missing school, work or important events; but they aren’t, at Walgreens, we give maybe about 4 flu shots a day,
These articles have spurred a controversy about vaccinations and have discouraged parents from them. Reluctance to vaccinate has increased over the past years and has caused parents to neglect the fact that they need to vaccinate their kids. Under-immunization has caused the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases like polio and measles to breakout in schools. Concern for recent outbreaks has lead me to pose the question: Should it be mandatory to vaccinate your kids?
To Vaccinate or not to vaccinate, has been a question many parents in America have been asking themselves for years. Some parents believe that it is their right to decide if their children will be vaccinated; while some states believe that all children should be vaccinated. There are logical and illogical reasons for this argument. There should be a federal law that requires parents to vaccinate their children because it will lower the number of deaths, benefit those children who have lower immune systems, and it can get rid of some diseases all together in the future.
There appears to be an alarmingly large group of people that don’t mind exposing their children to serious harm; in recent years, many adults have decided against vaccinating their children. This is unusual, as vaccines are non-lethal, very safe protection for children; they are even cost-effective for their parents and are considerably safer for the entire family when these children are vaccinated routinely (Prosser, 1548). Jennifer Hamborsky of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention essentially describes vaccination as the administration of antigenic material to stimulate an individual 's immune system to develop adaptive immunity to a pathogen- and vaccination
For the past ten years, we at Virginia Mason Medical Center have been implementing mandatory influenza vaccination. This is due to the flu vaccination being able to reduce flu illnesses and prevent flu-related hospitalizations. According to the Center for Control and Disease (CDC, 2014) during 2012-2013, an estimated 45% of the U.S population got vaccinated, helping to prevent an estimated 6.6 million flu-related illness, with 3.2 million flu-related medical visits, almost 80,000 hospitalizations and roughly $87 billion dollars in total economic burden. Influenza is extremely contagious and each year on an average 5%-20% of the U.S population get the flu with tens of thousands die from a flu-related illness. Therefore, many health cares setting along with Virginia Mason Medical Center is mandating all their healthcare workers to get the influenza vaccination. Consequently, making annual influenza vaccination requirement for healthcare workers a continuing and debatable health topic. The potential of getting the vaccination have great benefits to healthcare professionals, their patients, and their families by
In the United States, the law states that vaccinations are required for children entering school unless they have a valid reason that prevents them from receiving the vaccinations. Starting when children are born, they begin the regimen of vaccinations that continue throughout their adolescent years and adulthood. Each year children receive a variation of shots to protect them from the illnesses they will encounter in the world, especially once they attend school. The most common reasons parents forego getting their children vaccinated are religious beliefs, medical exemptions, and personal beliefs. Due to the rising number of parents declining to get their children vaccinated, the number of outbreaks of preventable diseases has increased. The question is now should parents/guardians be forced to vaccinate their children?
Do you go every year to receive your flu shot? Is it a tradition to take your family to go get vaccinated? For health care workers it is mandatory. Some other occupations require flu shots as well. The flu is a very communicable disease. Anyone can get sick from the flu, it may even be fatal. Health care workers are exposed to many different kinds of germs and many other harmful pathogens daily. It should be required for every personal to get a flu shot to help stop the spread of the flu virus and make for a healthier community.
Parents, who think that they don't have to vaccinate because children around people who are vaccinated, are committing child abuse. Vaccines only protect the people who are vaccinated. When people don't vaccinate not only are they leaving themselves open to disease, but they are completely ignoring the fact that vaccines don't end the chance for vaccinated people to get sick. "If the decision to refuse vaccination only affected the individual, then refusal would be permissible, but refusing vaccination puts others in harm's way...People who refuse to vaccinate take advantage of the large majority of people who do vaccinate, free-riding off of their immunity" (Merino). Immunity can build up over time. By definition, child abuse is, “Child abuse
As painless as the flu may sound it can actually be quite deadly. 55,227 deaths result each year due to the flu. Influenza, otherwise known as the flu, is one of the leading causes for nosocomial diseases contracted in hospital rooms. When being admitted to the hospital with the flu, your body is already below the homeostatic norm and won’t be able to fight off other pathogens that are developed in the hospital sufficiently. The only proper way to shield yourself is to get the influenza vaccine through injection. Influenza is a lot more than perceived and can be more deadly than heard of. Getting a twenty dollar vaccine is significantly healthier and smarter than paying a twenty million dollar bill.
Roughly over the last sixteen years, many parents have chosen to not vaccinate their children, putting other children at risk. This has been a huge debate across our country for many years now. Vaccinations should be mandatory and children should be completely up to date with all vaccinations before being allowed to attend school.
As a mother it is my instinct to keep my daughter safe, therefore I feel like all parents should be required to vaccinate their children. I don’t believe we should have a choice. Vaccines have gotten rid of so many deadly diseases, if it wasn’t for them we could still have the black plague or small pox killing off our
Over the past year, vaccinations have sparked controversy all over America. Some parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children. I believe that all members of the community should be properly vaccinated to avoid the spread of disease, to prevent introducing eradicated diseases to other countries, and to prevent premature death.
Parents should be required to vaccinate their children. This is why vaccines should be mandatory. Parents need to keep up on their children’s immunization schedule. Babies can already start to get vaccines at birth and should follow up getting them every month for their second dose. The Immunize for Good website (2016), states the current recommendation U.S. childhood immunization schedule is timed to protect children from fourteen pathogens by vaccinating them at the time in their lives when they are most vulnerable to the disease. Leifer (2015) documented in her journal up to five percent of parents in the UK and nine percent in the United States refuse to allow their children to be vaccinated with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The nine and five percent of parents need to realize they are harming their children by not protecting them with the vaccines. Parents need to realize all benefits of vaccinations, not only do they save lives in the present but also future generations, and they save money. Vaccines save children’s lives everyday and protect them from getting preventable diseases. Leifer (2015) put in her journal, according to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation one child dies every 20 seconds from vaccine preventable
Because of advancements in medicine, vaccinations are becoming a widespread medium in the prevention of disease. They have provided the eradication and immunity to many deadly diseases such as smallpox, polio and rubella. Although there is no law that mandates the vaccination of children, they are necessary to prevent the infliction of disease and harm. By making the decision to vaccinate their children, a parent has the potential to save their lives.
Parents all across the United States have an issue with vaccinations for their children. Parents as of today do not have the option whether or not to immunize their children. These vaccinations are potentially harmful for children, but they also help and prevent life threatening illnesses. Parents should be allowed to choose to vaccinate their children because at times, the vaccine might harm the child, and because the parents simply just have right.
