Review of Speech of Information & Diversity Comparing my first speech to this one, I can see several differences. I can tell by watching and listening that I was very nervous. My first speech was much easier, because it was over a topic that I know endless amounts of information about. I fumbled over my words, and that throws off rhythm, and makes me use several verbal pauses. The first speech, I hardly used my note cards. I did have them filled out but after starting the speech, I just went by the picture order and talked accordingly. My second speech, I could see many of the same mistakes. Being nervous is the main culprit, but practicing more, would have made the presentation smoother. I practiced multiple times, on a few different
My informative speech was on Jazz. The main topics I discussed in my presentation were the history of Jazz, the “Jazz Age”, and about Louis Armstrong. To begin this evaluation, I did poorly on this speech because I had my set of index card that had a lot of information, but instead of taking those index cards, I took one with less information and that’s what made me nervous during my presentation. I Think I need to make improvements on my posture, timing, and project my voice for everyone could be able to hear me. The reason I wrote these three things for improvement because I felt I was slouching and not projecting my voice as much.
Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.
INTRO: Prompt: What should “diversity on campus” mean and why? Hook: Does diversity help liberate narrow-mindedness? What exactly is diversity? To say that diversity is approached on school campuses is an understatement to the level of understanding in this increasingly globalized world. By its definition, “diversity” requires inclusion. Are school’s really working toward the inclusion of everyone? This means including color, national origin, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation. Looking at court cases and polls shown in the short articles, “Introduction from Place, Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America” and “The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality,” their approach to strengthening
This was something I was concerned about because when rehearsing for my speech I was worried the points were unbalanced but during the speech I did not feel like I spoke more about one topic than the other. I think it helped that I recognized this during rehearsing, so I was conscious of it during my presentation. Another thing I think I did well was my vocalized pauses. My um's & and's. Although I am aware that I still used vocalized pauses, I think it was a lot less frequent than in my first speech. I could definitely improve on a few things for my next speech. I feel that for my next speech I could improve on being relaxed and calming myself down. I need to remind myself I know what I am talking about and not get so tense and shaky during the presentation. Also I need to work on my eye contact. I looked at the crowd, but they were glances. And short ones. I need to extend my eye contact length and width. I need to focus and not reading from my cards and holding the eye contact for longer than a
A diversity statement is located on most colleges and universities websites. The purpose of many of these statements is to show colleges and universities are committed to diversity on their campuses. Leaders of the colleges and universities believe colleges should give students the ability to see a global society on their campuses. This global society includes individuals from all walks of life and from different backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.
As an overview of my speech, I didn’t put enough effort on my speech that I would liked to have done. After finishing my outline I only look at my paper a few times just going over what I would be saying for my speech. The reason that I didn’t spend too much time practicing with my speech was because I was very busy where as my other classes are demanding when it comes to time manages meant. As a result for not practicing, I have notice a huge difference on my second speech in comparison to my first. Whereas my first speech I had spent the proper amount of time going over the material and practicing my rehearsal with my girlfriend (Cassie). Conversely to my first speech I felt confident on what I wanted to talk about, but one huge difference was that I didn’t practice my rehearsal. As a result of not putting the time to practice my speed I had verbal clutter and not being
I always try to prepare myself and practice a lot before speeches or presentations. I want to be ready, and I want to know that I can give this speech, and do it well. I try to get to a point in which I will know I can get a good grade, and I can do my speech smoothly. I will practice in front of my siblings, parents, or by myself, and I’ll feel totally prepared. Then all of a sudden, when the time comes to finally
In the first article, the president of PRSA Torod Nepture discussed the road to diversity. When speaking on the topic, he expresses his passion to help talented practitioners who are entering the field. He also stated that during his time as president, he has developed a passion to expand to advocate for important causes. When asked about what he’d like to accomplish during his first year, he mentioned goals for he has for his Verizon team. Nepture believe that focusing on fewer things can lead to have a greater impact. He mentioned that this approach has been coined “impact at scale.” One of the key points of the interview was the question presented about the next step in professional PR. Nepture believes that this comes down to leadership
Public speaking can be very stressful, regardless of the many techniques out there to assist in calming your nerves. I think that every “first time” is a failure to me. If I’m starting a new class, leading a certain briefing, or addressing new people, I will always walk away with the feeling I could have done better. However, with that way of thinking I feel like it has pushed me to do better and I still use this to continue to show improvement. The first briefing I did as a young soldier to my superior command was almost too overwhelming. I found that after a few minutes it immediately got easier. I now use this experience to assist myself in current situations. I can become very nervous due to the fact that I’m competitive in everything
The feeling of dread I got in the middle of my speech was definitely unexpected. I've never had that feeling when practicing my speech before. I also presented one of my pictures out of order, which I didn't think I would do. I had the times I clicked to the next picture written out on my notecards, but I think I just clicked through because of nervousness.
I would bring diversity into the college atmosphere with my ability to multitask. I perform better under stress when I can prioritize objectives in my mind. I believe the ability to be able to have fifth-teen task going on at once that require management and close attention is an extremely usable and diverse trait. Some people crumble under high stress loads and are unable comprehend the task or multiple task at hand. We as individuals all have different mindsets and how we undergo performing task. Some of us plan out our actions step by step while using caution. Others of us do our task by sheer luck and actions and hope our actions turn out for the best. How we think is the main key to diversity, if we all thought the same then the world
This time around during the advocacy speeches I was a lot less nervous. It might have been because I have gotten so used to speaking in front of a specific group of people. I’m familiar with them and also the ways that they give speeches. Also preparing for the speech was not as much work as the previous assignments. Since I had previously did most of the research when preparing for the background speech, it wasn’t as time consuming. The only thing to do was pick a specific topic and give my viewpoint on it. I am very opinionated so it was easy to create a script on something that I am so passionate about. I feel as if I have learned a lot about public speaking from watching the different approaches that various people had taken.
There is so much I take for granted: I was born to a family that was always able to provide me with what I needed, was supported by love, and had financial security. In general, I grew up without knowing true hardship. I only realized this entering high school where I encountered my first real experience with diversity.
The first speech was the Most Embarrassing Moment speech. I honestly was still so nervous to record this even though I would just be looking at my computer screen. It felt kind of weird, almost as if I was video chatting with myself. After I memorized my speech and sent in my recording, I immediately assumed that I failed because the professor would think that I was too close to the screen or I was too loud or I moved my head around a lot. Then I ended up getting an A on it. Everything I thought that I did wrong was either irrelevant or did not distract from my presentation as a whole. Since I only missed one point, I can say that what I did well was all the
While watching my speeches, I noticed in the beginning that most of my thoughts weren’t organized. The first speeches that I had done weren’t as organized as the speeches that I had done towards the end of the semester. I noticed that I appeared less nervous when giving my speech on how to create a simple webpage by writing HTML. I went through each individual step starting with the creation of a simple webpage and then showing what else could be done to turn it into a complex one. I think out of all of the speeches that I had done, that was the best one I had done throughout the semester. I was required to use two sources during that demonstration speech however, I forgot to say where I got the information from while giving my speech. I noticed that I forgot to cite my sources multiple times or I didn’t cite them correctly throughout my speeches. When demonstrating or showing examples about my topic, I used PowerPoint Presentations for the majority of my speeches. I did not use one for my HTML demonstration speech. I used Notepad++ instead to show how webpages are scripted and created.
