Information Collection
Prison assault happens every day inside of the Department of Collection. Throughout the years this issue has developed, which has prompted the execution of PREA. It is exceptionally clear that something should be done, which is the reason numerous hours of examination and measurements have been concentrated on to locate the best answer for battle the issue. As should be obvious, as the years have passed more instances of prison assault have been accounted for. Before prison, assault was thought to be something that just happened to females, yet with more gay person and transgender men in the prison framework that number has changed significantly (Jryanua, 2015). When PREA was brought into play after the year 2003 more cases were being accounted for because of new reporting methodology being authorized by distinctive prison frameworks. By having, the capacity to get more detainees to report their instances of sexual misuse makes it simpler for the Department of Corrections to execute better methods for making casualties more agreeable to report any criminal issues (PREA, 2015).
Technology Influences
One of the primary things that prisoners have entry to, which could be utilized for some ulterior intentions, is email. Detainees have admittance to messages with the end goal them should have the capacity to stay in touch with their families. These messages are infrequently observed and throughout the years, they have been utilized for other criminal
According to statistical data found in the Bureau for Justice Records, there are a number of problems that most prisons in the country face. The records indicate that the number of adult federal and state inmates increased from `139% in `1980 to 260% (Walker, 1999). As a natural default, the United States of America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This in itself brings about one of the major problems that are faced in modern incarceration which is overcrowding in most prison facilities. The number of offenders in the country has increased rapidly over time while the country prison system has not really been able to cope with this rapid increase. Prisons intended for one or two inmates are now crowded with more than fifty individuals. Because of this most prisons are overcrowded and most of the facilities available are unable to cater for the needs of all the prisoners (Siegel, 2009).
The issue of sexual assault in correctional facilities is very complex and the implications reach far beyond the walls of the institution. Congress found that “prison rape endangers the public’s safety by making brutalized inmates more likely to commit crimes when they are released.”
The report responding to section 40507 of the Violence Against Women Act from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, National Institute of Justice, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services- National Institute of Mental Health determined that:
Created and established as one of the most superior facets within the United States criminal justice system, the Federal Bureau of Prisons is an agency that derives from the United States Department of Justice. Originating from the federal law enforcement agency sector, this system is accountable for a vast array of administrative duties pertaining to, but not limited to, commissioning the aspects of the federal prison system. Erected in 1930, the Bureau of Prisons was invoked as a means of mandating a feasible endeavor to conducting regulations and governing all federal penal correctional institutions. As the rapid evolution stemming from its formation excelled at an alarming rate, the agency that comprised of 11 operated facilities quickly evolved to 114 prisons in addition to 6 regional offices, and a headquarter. However, regardless of the agency’s levels of encroachment, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats has without a doubt summoned a more keen sensibility towards this monstrosity of dynamics that has embedded itself into the very core of the United States foundation.
Sexual assault is an ongoing problem in the U.S military. But there is a large number of soldiers who will admit that during their time in the service they have been sexually assaulted but did not report. Any unwanted sexual contact should be reported; these soldiers should receive justice without being afraid of what might happen to them and their career. Not reporting sexual assaults is putting others in danger of being a victim, and is encouraging these assailants that their actions is acceptable and it’s not.
Name: Lecturer: Course: Date of Submission: Mass incarceration in American Prisons Introduction More than 2.3 million Americans today are prisoners, a population that represents more than a quarter of the number of prisoners in the world. This means that 760 Americans in one hundred thousand are prisoners in America (Detotto and Pulina). The rise in prisoners’ numbers has sharply risen since 1980 with the cost of maintaining the prison going to over four hundred percent within the same period.
Approximately 240,000 brutal rapes occur in our prison systems each year (Lozoff). Most of the victims are young, nonviolent male inmates, many of them teenaged first offenders. They are traumatized beyond imagination. Most of these inmates are nonviolent criminals who cannot or will not defend themselves. Unfortunately, this results in many of those nonviolent offenders turning violent by the time they leave prison.
…the BJS found that 4.5 percent of the nation’s prisoners, i.e., inmates who have been convicted of felonies and sentenced to more than a year, had been sexually abused in the facilities at which they answered the questionnaire during the preceding year: approximately 60,500 people. Moreover, 3.2 percent of jail inmates—i.e., people who were awaiting trial or serving short sentences—had been sexually abused in their facilities over the preceding six months, meaning an estimated total, out of those jailed on the day of the survey, of 24,700
It is dreadful enough to get raped, but having to see your perpetrator every day and possibly raping you again is a constant fear that many inmates have to encounter. According to the Bureau of Justice (BJS), in 2008 correctional administrators reported 7,444 allegations of sexual abuse in prisons. About 46 % of the sexual abuse involved staff with inmates. But these statistics do not include the many cases that go unreported due to victim’s fear of being punished by their perpetrators and/ or to embarrassment and humiliation that comes with rape. Although prison rape is prevalent, many individuals find it normal and even find it a laughing matter. Prison rape is abnormal and has huge consequences if not dealt with. Some of the
Contrary to popular belief sexually transmitted diseases are not the only physical harm victims of prison rape endure. Many rape victims endure broken bones, broken noses, bruises, cuts, concussions, and the obvious genital injuries. Sexual assaults also increases violent behavior in prisons because inmates who feel like they may be a future target of sexually assault, defend themselves, and lash out in these violent rages and fights to establish themselves with a “tough guy” reputation to prevent any sexual misconduct from other inmates.
When we do research on daily prison life, we come across two typical but less than ideal situations: either social imaginaries cloud our judgment or information provided by the prisons themselves hide certain weak or bad aspects that they do not want to make public. We can also find information on TV, but most of the time it either exaggerates or minimizes the facts. In order to obtain more reliable information, we have to have access to people who are working or have worked in this institution, and such will be the sources of this essay. We will be describing and giving examples of prison violence according to three types of violence: sexual, physical and psychological violence.
I choose this topic because sexual assault is one of the most offensive crimes committed in our society. Not only is it a threat to the community, but it has a physically and psychologically effect on the victim in many ways. For the last couple of decades, sexual assault, rape, and child molestation has become the focal point of public concerns today. According to a 1993 National Crime Victimization Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, about 500,000 rapes or sexual assaults occur each year (Statistics, March 2010). The Department of Justice states that, “rape crimes have risen nearly three times as fast as the total crime rate”, although other studies have shown statistics that are in
Compared to mental health workers correctional officers are assaulted nearly twice as much (Schenk & Fremouw, 2012). Sexual violence inside of prisons is issue in which the government has put effort in to address with the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 however a study of black men was conducted and 43 % of those men indicated that they have a least heard sexual acts of violence occur inside of the prison (Rowell-Cunsolo, Harrison, & Haile, 2014). Across the United States about 4% of the inmates have been a victim of sexual assault (Daquin, Daigle, & Johnson Listwan, 2016). Other than sexual assault around 32% and up to 66% of inmates have been a victim of some type of physical violence (Daquin, Daigle, & Johnson Listwan, 2016). Also 18% to 49% of inmates have had property stolen from them (Daquin, Daigle, & Johnson Listwan, 2016). Also other factors that can contribute to violence occurring inside of prisons is gang membership. This is usually an identifier for the inmates to know who to attack and who to leave alone. Also sexual predators are subjected to some sort of violence because of the crime that landed them inside of the prison. The amount of time that you spend in prison can contribute to whether you become a victim or not (Ross, 2012). This is why prison overcrowding has become such a major problem for violence the
The distinctive cultural groups contrast to conventional norm of subculture has demonstrated the increase of prison enrollment. Norms that is labelled as deviant that can range from pickpocketing, stealing, rapes and murders. These vast differences of degree of deviant behaviors causes juvenile jails or regular jails. From the mass enrollment with the general populations in prison of the same sex that can range from different severity. While in jail many unwilling sexual intercourse if performed. Rape, is the unwanted and force sexual intercourse from someone of the same or opposite sex. According to the Editorial Board, “Previous studies have found that juveniles housed in adult facilities were at greater risk of sexual assault than
Global Tel-Link is a mogul for the prison profit system and takes pride in connecting prisoners and their families, and to show how much they care about their customers they charge them prices tantamount to ransom. Many prisoners lack the financial means on the outside with which to pay for the use of the telephone. Keeping in contact with family and friends on the outside is of great importance to the psyche and this should not have barriers placed in front of it by the high user charges that inmates are forced to pay in order to keep that contact.
