One of the hardest skills in communications, is creating a thoughtful and engaging speech that not only entertains, but informs the audience. In my opinion, I believe my informative speech about Overfishing was good, but not great. My organization, research, and rehearsal could have been much tighter and some details were overlooked in my excitement when trying to present.
My overfishing speech in general is well organized for such a broad topic. I explained the minimum of three effects just like a proper informative speech requires; Economics, environment and culture. The main points were explained showing differences and similarities. In my excitement to present, I overlooked minor key details during the speech introduction. Properly explaining

Overfishing is major if silent problem facing human civilization. The two main sources met the criteria for the CRAAP test. For example, my source Oceans and Fisheries Canada. Currency-the information was up to date, is relevant, government agency, accurate using government researchers and purpose was document the Atlantic cod fishery collapse. I incorporated the right citations. Canadian fishery Minister Jim Crosbie or Leigh Henry, senior policy advisor for the World Wildlife Fund.
For clear understanding to myself and to work out the kinks I rehearsed two times. I had managed to avoid the awkward pauses and to speak in clear and leveled tone that hopefully inspired trust in my audience to know that I know what I am talking about and not stuttering or being confused. My only regret was not bringing a note card so I could spend more time making eye contact with the audience and not at the powerpoint.
No doubt my rationale for using a powerpoint and incorporating three visual aids was to help organize the information I was using for better understanding for my audience.Three topics each had one visual aid, learning from previous speeches, it's best not to overdo them. Overfishing is a process, not a product so a physical prop was not possible unless of course I brought in a dead fish, but that was neither practical nor properly
The earliest accounts of overfishing occurred in the 1800s, when the demand of whale blubber nearly wiped out the whale populations. In the mid 1900s, the harvesting of Atlantic cod, herring, and California sardines drove them to the brink of extinction. These high disruptions cause regional depletions of animal resources which is starting to cause a global problem. There has never been a more urgent time for fishing nations to make a commitment towards the sustainability of our oceans. More than 80% of the world’s fisheries have been, or are being pushed beyond their limits and are in dire need of strict management plans. Populations of fish and elasmobranch fish such as tuna, grouper and sharks have been declining to the point where the survival
The article states, “…there is ample evidence that overfishing is a significant factor in the decline of numerous species and fisheries…” (Allan et al. 1045). This statement alone summarizes the article accurately and illuminates the major problem addressed in the scholarly journal. While relaying an indistinguishable message, an article by Myers and Worm finds a different way of relaying information.
Signs of overfishing is the decrease in number of seawards animals based on the yearly data based. The fishing industry often responds to these signs by moving to new areas to catch, and overtime it’s might cost the same result as the initial result.
Overfishing is an issue that not everyone is aware. People tend to think that the ocean is infinite, as well
Ocean overfishing is the process of removing wildlife from the ocean (or any other water sources) at unsustainable rates that lower their replication rates. Overfishing began around the mid-20th century. At this time, there were many attempts to increase the pricings and variety of protein-rich foods; this led to the government trying to increase the fish capacity. While the fishing operations advanced, the fish populations deteriorated. These operations ended up turning into profit-hoggers and started to steal the ocean’s wildlife. Considering that this was just the onset of overfishing, the buyers became adapted to having a variety of fish at reasonable prices. In 1989, after about 90 million tons of fish were taken from the ocean, the products
For my own part in the speech I noticed that I was speaking at a good pace but still needed to maybe speak a bit faster. I also mispronounced a few words and used too many filler words like “umm” instead of pausing. In my visual delivery I felt like I did a good job in except my movement of my head seemed more sporadic than I remember. Even though this was a video and had no real live audience to present to, I think I did well connecting to the audience. The presentation aids that I put into the power point for was great for visualizing our ideas to the audience. I did feel that some slides had too many pictures. The video I found also made it easier for the audience to relate to the topic.
My volume and background noise was perfect and I made sure to try and keep a smile in my voice to try and mask my nervousness! Based on the feedback of my audience, I do believe that my message was received loud and clear on the presentation. Also, the questions from the others made me feel like they thought what I was saying was very interesting. My conclusion, in my opinion, was very soft and wasn’t as strong as it needed to be. I tried to be sure that I left my audience with something to think about and try and maybe go on a scavenger hunt in their daily lives to find things that may be a skill I did not list. As with everything, I need improvement in a few areas. The use of the word “um” needs to be nonexistent! Maybe that was my anxiety and nervousness coming out? Either way, I need to eliminate the word from my vocabulary especially when presenting. Also, with my tone of voice, in a few sections, sounded like I was reading off paper. Even if I was those few times, I need to change how I read and my tone when reading. My storylines were off the topic in one section, so I need to be able to go over my presentation and outline a few times before going live to make sure I am saying everything I want to say at the appropriate
Overfishing is a constant problem that we are facing on almost every coast around the globe.
The movie, Home, stated that overfishing was a major global issue. I believe the issue is still an issue, (though not as out of control as we think) as species of fish are still facing overfishing. I also believe the problem is more known now than it was then, and that people are beginning to think about the future. That’s why we have regulations about what species we can and cannot catch. However, unless we make drastic changes about this situation, the population of certain fish will decrease. Some species aren’t as numerous as they were in the past, such as Atlantic Bluefin Tuna.
I would not have done things differently if I had the chance to change anything in the presentation because I did everything that I could. For this presentation, I started rehearsing the week before. This presentation was one of my main priorities. I would read on the train or in between classes. Because of my hard work, I was able to memorize the entire speech. In addition, I believed that I improved within these last few months. Before communication class, I was not the best at public speaking. Honestly, I was frustrated because I knew it was going to take me a while before I get comfortable with public speaking. However, after taking communication class for months, I realized that I just needed a push. Because of this class, I was able to learn many important factors that go into speech making and practice my speech skills. Currently, I am not as scared as I was in the first speech. I will continue to further improve my communication skills to help me grow as an individual and to better my
Today I will be talking about over fishing, Over-Fishing is the over exploitation of fish to below acceptable levels. This can occur in most bodies of water, such as the oceans, rivers, lakes and even ponds. In over fishing we are going to be talking about shark finning, Shark finning is the practice of slicing off the shark’s fins while the shark is still alive and throwing the rest of its body back into the ocean where it can take days to die what must be an agonizing death. Shark finning is very common in Asia as it is a delicacy and a prime ingredient in shark fin soup. Overfishing is very bad problem that is occurring more and more in the world today.
Overfishing has led to the destruction of ecosystems and resulting in great amount of reduction of stocks in fish and marine mammals from the 11th century onwards (Roberts, 2009). Ocean overfishing is defined as catching fish from sea at rates too high thus lead to depletion of the stock of fish. As today, there are almost 90 percent of fish population have been depleted by humans worldwide because fish is considered as a sources of food. In 2010, 148 million tonnes of fish from fisheries and aquaculture were used by the world and 86 percent of which was used as food for people (Katz, 2012). Besides, according to the non-profit group New Economics Foundation, Ireland, Spain, and Sweden were the worst offenders. Based on a
The main causes of overfishing are poor fishery management with a lack of regulation, unrestricted access to the ocean and illegal fishing. During the last few decades the demand for edible seafood globally has skyrocketed and the high demand is causing us to overfish to keep up with the demand. Unfortunately, fisherman are catching more fish than can be naturally reproduced. There are only limited regulations in place, which means that fishing companies are basically fishing when and where they want to with out any oversite. Overfishing causes such serious effects such as the ocean life getting knocked out of balance. Coastal communities rely on the benefits of the fishing for social and economic health. When we overfish it
If we continue to overfish, several aquatic species may become endangered, or maybe even extinct. From there, the damage will be irreversible. The aforementioned problems will then be a reality. However, if we stop overfishing now, then those issues will become very minor and can be easily solved. By putting an end to overfishing, the fisheries won’t have to stop operating, but they will have to limit the amount of fish they catch. Ocean ecosystems become healthy once again while still allowing us to use fisheries as a resource. Continuing overfishing will put an end to all fisheries because there won’t be any more fish to catch at all. Therefore, the problem overfishing must be taken care of now, or the time to act will be gone
Overfishing is an enormous issue that needs to be corrected or there will be no more fish to catch in the future. The true definition of overfishing is as defined by the national fisheries act from 1996 overfishing is “a rate or level of fishing mortality that jeopardizes a fishery's capacity to produce maximum sustainable yield (MSY) on a continuing basis(kennedy, 2016)." Some of the facts of overfishing are so shocking they would blow you out of the water, as well as some of the effects overfishing can have on the fisheries. The solutions to overfishing are extremely simple and completely within our power to do.
