In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst demonstrates that the confidence that comes with pride is an inspiration for growth, however, overconfidence can lead to one’s downfall. Despite a year of seemingly hopeless attempts to teach Doodle how to walk, Brother manages to persist because he has “[Doodle] to be proud of” (Hurst 419). Although Brother teaching Doodle how to walk was not altruistic, it was his pride that allowed it to happen in the first place. If Brother and Doodle did not have their pride to fuel their desire for success then they would have accepted what everyone else said about how Doodle would not be able to walk which even Doodle agreed with at first. Without pride, one would not have the inner desire for success
‘Brother’ has a difficult time having a crippled brother forming a Man VS Self conflict. ‘Brother’ changes throughout the story but in the end is consumed by pride. The theme Hurst tries to show throughout the ‘Scarlet Ibis’ s that one can have pride, but it can lead to helpful outcomes, but don’t become consumed by it or you will not get what you dreamed of. When ‘Brother’ and Doodle revealed that Doodle could walk at his 6th birthday “ “What are you crying for?” asked Daddy, but I could not answer. They did not know that I did it for myself, that pride, whose slave I was [...] Doodle only walked because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother” (Hurst 258). When ‘Brother’ starts crying he is consumed by guilt from forcing Doodle to learn how to walk. He knew it was pride controlling him, but could not help free himself from it. His pride though let him teach Doodle to walk and gain compassion for Doodle, his crippled brother. The incident changes ‘Brother’ in a way where he learned, but did not realize, he should never have pushed Doodle as far as he did. ‘Brother’s’ pride got the better of him and he wanted to teach Doodle how to row a boat and run. ‘Brother’ tried day after day, but Doodle just did not have the endurance. Yet ‘Brother’ did not stop, he kept pushing Doodle to his limits “The faster I walked, the faster he would, so i began to run [...] in the moment
Dr. Grey begins his critique with introducing a brief philosophical history of the strengths perspective.
As renown American football coach, Vince Lombardi once said, “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will.” This quote depicts that if one does not have the drive within them to succeed they simply won’t. However, an individual who is determined can succeed with any complex task they are presented with. Therefore, the theme determination is a character trait that helps people to survive and succeed through life obstacles is developed into Nya’s and Salva’s sections in A Long Walk to Water and John and Martha's sections in Lost Boy, Lost Girl: Escaping Civil War in Southern Sudan. In both novels, Nya, Salva, John, and Martha undergo various obstacles in which

“Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired and success achieved” (Helen Keller). (Hook) Motivation, when used to push a person to their highest potential, can cause both greatness and disappointment. (Bridge) In James Hurst’s story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” Brother pushes Doodle to the limit teaching Doodle activities that he would have never had the opportunity to do without the motivation and determination to reach greatness. (FS1) Throughout the journey of learning to walk, swim, and run, Brother motivates Doodle to keep pushing so that he could be like the other kids before he started school. (FS2) Doodle, born physically impaired, tries his best to follow his brother’s orders and make him happy, but this leads him to his death. (FS3) The motivation in this short story is represented by three symbols: the scarlet ibis, the wagon, and the coffin, which all demonstrate the motivation Doodle and Brother have to use to overcome the obstacles they face. (Thesis) Motivation can be used as a compelling force to strive for greatness, but can lead to upsetting results when it is used to the extent as it is in the “Scarlet Ibis,” by James Hurst, which is demonstrated by the symbols of (I) the scarlet ibis, (II) the wagon, (III) and the coffin.
When life gives people lemons, they either make lemonade or get terrified and run. In a way, that is how Negative Capability works. People can either accept fate and make the best out of what life hands them, or they can crack under pressure and run away from their problems. According to John Keats, Negative Capability is the capacity to remain certain in the midst of doubt and uncertainty. This idea is especially exemplified through the literary works of Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe; Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie and “An Open House” by James Hughes. These pieces of literature exhibit characters who both, possess Negative Capability or lack it. Consequently, they show that in times of adversity, those who do not possess Negative Capability are unable to successfully cope with disappointment in contrast to those who do have this characteristic.
We all have inner demons raging war inside of us, battling to consume our very essence. We cling to some faint hope that there is someone or something out there waiting at the ready to swoop in and prevent us from falling victim to the beckoning darkness. Literature has some of the best examples of being torn apart by internal conflicts. Even if the book is not focusing on internal conflict there seems to be a subliminal message screaming from beneath the ink; ‘people can overcome any challenge they put their mind to, people can do anything.’

A boy who is being bullied at school doesn't know what to do or who to go to. He has become depressed and a shell of who he once was. He wants to talk to someone about what he is going through. He talks to his friend. His friend says he can not give into the bullies and give them what they want. He has to get stronger for the next bullies to come. Hardships are very common among people who are struggling, but they can not give into those struggles, instead of giving in they need to get stronger. This idea can be seen in many pieces of the following poems.“Invictus” by William Ernest Henley and “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes both convey the message that people who are struggling throughout a

In the novel The Moon is Down, the play Antigone and in the poem Invictus, the human spirit gives the characters the ability to overcome oppression and have strength. Although each work is set in a different era, the strength of the human spirit remains prevalent. The human spirit gives individuals the ability to have determination and display strength in the midst of adversity and oppression; both of which are exemplified throughout the life of every individual.
