In the film, Inside Out (Docter, 2015), the connection between Joy and Sadness works to explain the relationship between the mind, brain, and body, of their host child, Riley, and by extension, the minds, brains, and bodies of its audience. The importance of the Joy and Sadness connection demonstrates that while the classic “theory of mind” approach holds that we understand things through immediate reflection of our ability to attribute mental states like beliefs, intentions, desires, knowledge, and perspectives, to ourselves and to others, these animated characters, all while understanding that others, again including these animated characters that we know to be mediated by the hands of artists, have beliefs, desires, intentions, and viewpoints …show more content…
We are further able to understand and identify with Sadness because our whole body is in attendance to her animated involvement, putting us in a space where the same thing is happening to us. In the case of Inside Out, the space is inside Riley’s head, and it is built on the shifting psychical landscape of her childhood. Pixar deliberately moves to engage the audience in Riley’s world by avoiding the fact that Inside Out is a film. The film’s narrative treats its artistic external space as though it was being televised, complete with long establishing shots, and in an approach similar to the description of Toy Story (Lassiter, 1995), Riley’s “real” life also features “… a three dimensional, digitally constructed environment … (that) … ultimately gave the animated filmmaker a great deal of flexibility in constructing (the) visual narratives… (T)he ultimate outcome (was) a greater degree of control in colorization, in which every individual element in the digital landscape (could) be fine-tuned in color space. It forces them to literally forget their hardships, bypass their differences, and refocus on the task of getting back to headquarters, and leading Team Riley. The flaw composed of the narrow vision of their purpose and self-imposed hierarchy don’t allow them to succeed in every situation, giving heart to their goal, and triggering urgency and investment in spectator mirror neurons because our bodies believe that if we lean a little closer, or breathe a little deeper, the Team will push through for

Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas. These ideas can also be depicted using objects. Symbolism is clearly visible in the book Inside Out and Back Again. When Ha and her family are leaving South Vietnam, they had to leave behind items that represented a part of them. Ha’s papaya tree symbolizes the rise and fall of hope and her home.

According to Adler and Proctor (2011), it talks about responding to transgressions and some examples to that would be coming to an acceptance, rejection and discussion. In the movie “Inside out” we discover how all the emotions try to steer the way to control the little girl “Riley” mind but one specific character by the name of “Joy” is basically the one in charge of them all and tries to take on more of the responsibility in situations. Throughout the movie something happens to Riley and her emotions
Pixar’s Inside Out is an interesting take on how our emotions work as well as how our brains operate. The story starts off with a narration by Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, explaining how her job works, and how she and the other emotions came to be inside the mind of young Riley Anderson. The emotions watch and guide Riley by influencing how she reacts to different daily situations. The only thing the emotions are not prepared for however, is an unexpected move from Minnesota to San Francisco (Inside Out). This hilarious take at how our brains work allows Inside Out to create an entertaining and engaging movie using character interaction and its deeper emotional and psychological meanings.
The film Inside Out tells the story of a young girl named Riley and her changing emotions after she is forced to move from her home town in Minnesota to San Fransico for her father’s job. The story is told from the perspective of her five emotions. Riley’s emotions are led by Joy, who attempts to guide her through the stressful event. Although Joy puts forth great effort, Sadness takes over. When trying to protect Riley’s core memories from Sadness, Joy is swept from headquarters through the dump tube and Sadness follows. With Joy and Sadness gone, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are the only emotions left in headquarters; therefore, Riley cannot be happy or sad. Because Joy and Sadness are absent, Riley’s personality islands diminish one by one. Riley fights with her family, pushes away from her friends back home, and loses interest in hockey. As Joy and Sadness navigate through Riley’s brain in search of a way back to headquarters, they encounter many obsticles. Back in headquarters, Anger, Fear, and Disgust place the idea of running away into Riley’s head. Joy witnesses the transformation of a sad memory into a happy memory, and finally realizes the importance of all emotions, including Sadness. With the help of Bing Bong, Riley’s imaginary friend, Joy and Sadness find their way back to headquarters and are able to stop Riley from running away. An update in headquarters takes place, and more personality islands develop. Joy learns to accept the
Pixar’s film, Inside Out, addresses our relationship to our feelings in a sophisticated way for adults and kids to understand and enjoy. Joy, Anger, Disgust, Sadness, and Fear, the five emotions that dwell in the inner world of a young girl named Riley. Joy is the team leader and she displays compassion and demonstrates the aspect of her that permits her to be happy. Anger is very passionate about making sure things work out fairly for Riley. Disgust is highly opinionated and tries to protect her from poisonous situations whether physically or socially. Sadness was used to signal when Riley needed comfort and support. Finally, Fear, he is always on the lookout and I used to protect her. All five of the emotions contribute to build up Riley’s personality. She is upbeat, honest, cheerful, somewhat neurotic, etc.
Inside Out is a movie based on the emotions of the life progression of Riley. The movie starts off when Riley was born. In a dark room Joy ascends to a button, which is the control center in Riley’s mind, and touches it which makes Riley give a little baby giggle. As a result of Riley’s giggle, a glowing little ball is produced, a memory, and because the memory was created by Joy, the memory ball is yellow. Then after 33 seconds, Sadness comes and touches the button to make Riley cry. As Riley grows into a toddler Fear comes into Headquarters. He helps Riley in her interaction with her surroundings as she plays, and keeps her safe from electrical outlets and cords. Then when Riley is introduced to a plate of broccoli we first encounter Disgust
Riley has an extremely difficult time adapting to her new school, new people, and a new city. Throughout it all though, her parents are always supporting her. It is extremely important that we teach children that it is okay to feel sad and that they should not hide their emotions; the film does an exceptional job at making sure they get that message across to children watching. Inside Out captures important family values in a very effective and relatable
When dissecting the movie Inside Out a variety of psychological concepts are discovered within the story line of the children’s animation. The concepts that come to mind after watching the film are emotions, false memory, and long-term memory. In psychology, and emotion is often defined as a complex state of feelings that result in psychological and even physical changes that can influence your thoughts, actions, and behaviors. An example of emotion could be whenever you watch an ASPCA animal rescue commercial you may feel sad and driven to help those animals. Secondly, false memory is described as a fabricated and distorted memory of an event, memories are not always an accurate recollection of event.
Sadness, Joy, Fear, Disgust and Anger. Five emotions felt by human beings on a regular basis. These five emotions are personified as characters in the movie “Inside Out”. The movie Inside Out is about an 11-year-old girl named Riley who is living a happy life until she moves with her family to San Francisco (Rivera, Docter, del Carmen, 2015). Cognitive, social and linguistic development are all essential parts that contribute to the development of a growing child, such as Riley. The movie displays these types of development in terms of memories, emotions, attention, humor and many other aspects. The purpose of this paper will be to explain why the movie Inside Out (2015) is appropriate for children ages 6 to 12 years of age in terms of their cognitive, social and linguistic development.
Inside out is a phenomenal children’s movie based on the human brain. This movie breaks down the human brain in layman’s term for children of all ages to understand. The movie is about a little girl who movies from the only town that she has ever known to a place where she cannot adjust. The main character in the movie is riley. Throughout the movie it showcases Riley’s emotion and reactions to the move that her parents decide to make. Although riley is the main character, the movie goes in depth of Riley’s brain as there are also five other main characters. The other main characters in the movie are Riley’s emotions. The five emotions are Joy, Anger, Disgust, Sadness, and Fear. As Riley’s mood changes her core memories are tainted. In order to keep riley from going down a path of destruction, each emotion must work together to get riley back on track.
Had I watched this Inside Out at different points over the semester, I would have been able to find different flaws each time. This movie is supposed to be about Riley, but it turns out to be centered around the journey that Joy and Sadness must take in order to return to headquarters, more specifically, it validates sadness as an emotion. Sadness spent her first eleven years with Riley being told to stay back and not to screw anything up, in reality, sadness is often frowned upon, because for some people, they are the opposite of Riley’s character. This movie shows that the happiest of children can go through life changing struggles and embrace their other emotions. You cannot appreciate being happy unless you have known being sad, this movie brings attention to the necessity of a balance in life.
In the film, Inside Out the storyteller uses the move to San Francisco or, the Underworld and when Joy and Sadness/the Task, and Joy being the hero shows that we as humans will always try and make things better and get angry if it doesn’t work out when we can’t control what’s going on because we like having everything our way. Some Topics that are shown in this movie are, Friendship, Happiness, and Jealousy. In Inside Out when Joy and Sadness get lost and they try to make it back to headquarters and things go wrong because Riley (the human that the emotions are controlling.) is only feeling anger, fear and disgust because Joy and Sadness are not in headquarters. Furthermore, when Joy and Sadness try to make it back to headquarters Joy gets frustrated but always tries to stay positive.
The constructed space of the outside world with three-dimensional figures in it presents a world close to reality and at the same time, the inside world shows a space that adopts the conventions of traditional animation like the squash and stretch emotion characters. The mix of these two worlds creates a visual balance to not frighten ones perception of animation and the real world because of the extent of its hyperrealism. The ability of the characters in Riley’s inside world to transform eases up the tension the three-dimensionality and hyperrealism the space of the outside world generates. For example, in the sequence Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong get trapped in the room of abstract thought, they transform into two-dimensional abstract shapes (1.1). Sadness says, “we are two dimensional” and Bing Bong further says, “depth, I’m lacking depth”. Even though these characters have the ability to transform, they should not exist in two-dimensional forms. With their dialogue, they reaffirm that they are three-dimensional characters existing in a three-dimensional space and existing in two-dimensional forms only makes them feel stagnant and trapped in that space. Inside Out adopts a pictorial reality and the same dimensions as the real world physics, not the traditional cartoon physics. The space in Inside Out is well detailed and has depth and scale to it. The space of the inside world and outside world do not break a forth
