“In the Combat Zone” written by Leslie Marmon, is about how the roles of women have been taught for generations. Women are smaller and weaker, and that we are sitting ducks waiting to be victims by our prey. Women are taught to be easy targets by their mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. They were told that women should not kill, or use weapons. In this essay Leslie Marmon, explains that we can put a stop to the crimes done against women by strangers. Females must learn how to take aggressive action individually. In the 20th century woman no longer have to fit in the box that they have been put in. We can defend and protect ourselves. I was inspired by this essay in the combat zone in how she handles herself when she thought her life …show more content…
If it does not feel right, do not do it. If someone is approached by a predator, never leave the primary crime scene. Always stay in the primary crime scene. Attract as much attention as you can to yourself. A lot of women worry that they will make their attackers angry and get hurt worse if they try to defend themselves, though statistics have shown that the odds of survival are far greater if you do fight back. I got so caught up in reading about self defense that I read on and on. So I could probably write a whole paper on safety. But honestly I think my point was made that the difference between walking away and becoming tomorrow's newspaper headline all comes down to how well prepared we are to protect ourselves in a bad situation. I believe this goes for men and women. I picked in the combat zone by Leslie Marmon because I had my own story to tell with it. I had just turned 21.I was invited to a party. My car was in the shop so I had someone come pick me up. After about four to five hours the party become too much and I was ready to go home. I couldn’t get anyone to take me home and I was a little embarrassed to call someone. My house was only about four miles away so I decide to walk home. I don’t know what I was thinking because the first thing I did was put on my headphones. This is a big no no. I didn’t realize I was being followed until about a mile away from the house. By that time it was 12:30
In the article entitled “The Longest War” from her 2014 book “Men Explain Things to Me”, Rebecca Solnit speaks about the issues surrounding the subject of male violence. She vehemently writes about how the plethora of male violence is being directed solely at women. She explains that a multitude of innocent women around the world are being abused by men. The amount of male violence taking place around the world is staggering; so much of it is happening everywhere. Solnit states the male gender is responsible for the deluge of violence, and that women in all parts of the world emotionally and physically suffer from it.
Writer and activist, Rebecca Solnit, addresses the issues of gender inequalities and violence against women in her essay “The Longest War.” Solnit’s purpose is to shed a light onto the inequitable and often detrimental treatment of women, and to emphasize the need for change. She utilizes a compelling, matter-of-fact tone to optimize the effect her words will have on her readers, both male and female. “The Longest War” by Rebecca Solnit employs the rhetorical strategies of substance and context to highlight gender issues worldwide, and to inspire people to act in favor of equality.
Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten. The sad part about it is that many will never admit to it or acknowledge this fact. Along with the previously stated point, Sandra also talks about just how used to violence the children of Mango Street are. They don't flinch anymore when they hear sirens because they are accustomed to them. Many want to escape, but often are incapable of doing so on their own. Sally tries to escape and be her own person, yet she is shut down when no one helps her do so. As Americans it is the citizen’s duty to make this
Feminists and women’s activist groups would have us believe that women are equal in strength, skill level, and in every form as men. Some women are attempting to get into the front lines of combat using lines such as: “it would increase the number of available soldiers”, “women can be as strong as men”, “there won 't be any
In the essay, “In the Combat Zone,” Leslie Marmon Silko writes for the purpose of explaining the hardships that women go through in their everyday lives, that men do not necessarily have to worry about. Through personal stories about her growing up with her father who taught her how to use guns and hunt, to actual encounters with dangerous men who could’ve potentially harmed her had she not been experienced, Silko provides real life examples of the dangers women face in their everyday lives. Women are at risk whenever they leave the safety of their home, and even may be at risk in their home as well. Being raised to depend on others for protection leaves women vulnerable to attacks that leave them defenseless. This is different than men who are raised in a way that gives them power and essentially puts them above women and eliminates this fear. We see this theme on page 734 when Silko writes, “Men who have been in combat know the feeling of being a predator’s target, but it is difficult to men to admit admit that we women live our entire lives in a combat zone.”
A researcher and writer of women in security roles, published author and lecturer at the University of Sydney. Dr. Megan H Mackenzie, wrote “Let Women Fight,” published in 2012 in Foreign Affairs. Mackenzie argues that despite popular belief in the United States women can indeed serve in combat roles next to men. Mackenzie begins by addressing some issues she has with the proponents citing research and statistics, while also appealing to ethos and logos. The tone that Mackenzie uses as well as the credible sources and appeals to the audience led me to believe the persuasive elements.
I found this book to be very informative though Shannon’s interviewing tactics were questionable, for example having the women discuss their personal rape experiences in a group setting, rather than one on one, or paying the women to share their stories as she writes, “I scrounge around my bag and pull out US$40, slipping it to Wandolyn with the uneasy feeling I’ve just paid her to relive all that” (Shannon 145). However, from reading A Thousand Sisters by Lisa J. Shannon I have learned that in a sense, it is more dangerous to be a woman than a soldier in combat.
World War II was the most massive and murderous equipped combat in the history of humankind. Working women, within and outside of the military, quickly became a crucial part of the US’ army forces during WWII. Women’s involvement evolved over this time and eventually led to women’s rights movements throughout the United States.
Women have always served in the United States Military, since the beginning of the existence of the United States. I will make the argument, that women can and should be allowed to serve in combat roles, that are traditionally open for men only. Combat does not distinguish between the sexes. This is an important issue for everyone. The main reason, why women have never been allowed to be in combat roles, is because the sight of a wounded woman on the battle field makes for heart breaking image. It should not matter what the gender is, as long as they get the job done on the battlefield. The conventional ways of fighting a war, does not exist anymore. We all have a part, women and men. There is only one
Throughout the history of mankind there has always been a debate regarding the equality between men and women. A more specific detail in this argument is the conflict of women should be on the front line of battlefield. This topic is significant congress is currently passing legislation on whether women can serve on the front lines of combat. It is also significant because the army rangers has opened its camp to women for the first time in early 2015. This essay will argue the point that women should not be allowed on the front line of combat but allowed in the military. In order to argue this point this essay will demonstrate how the role of women changed in combat over the past 100 years. It will also show what the differences are between
Owens’s claims over the topic of women in combat happen to be that he is against the idea of placing “American women in combat or in support positions associated with direct ground combat” in the military. He states that there physical differences between the sexes, men tend to treat women differently, and that the presence of women lead to double standards. Therefore, with this reasoning that Owens claims allows the readers to have a better understanding of his perspective on women in
The book, Women in Combat: A Reference Handbook, display how women have been serving and involved in combat dating back to ancient times. The Author, Rosemarie Skaine, provides references that highlight women achievements and link their participation to the respective conflicts. She articulates the challenges women face from balancing family life to sexual issues. She also compares the role of women in the United States Military to foreign militaries. The book paints an overall sketch of women on the battlefield without a front line and their willingness to confront all odds.
Women are very skilled at these jobs, and help the country in many ways that we can’t imagine. But the one thing that is stirring up arguments across the country, is should women in the U.S. military engage in combat? Women across the country argue that women should be given the equal rights and opportunities in the military and in combat situations. Although many
A woman in combat was a trending topic for the armed forces for years. The year 2016 is when officially women have been granted the right to join the armed forces in a combat field of the job. Others, particularly in the military, are against this act because of various reasons concerning the safety of military troops in an anarchy form of living. A battlefield is known to be the most stressful and dangerous environment, and it is vital for the armed forces to conduct safety and simpleness to remove any complicated areas that might make the job more difficult. Efficiency, communication, and most importantly trust and loyalty are essential to perform in such a violent atmosphere.
Rape and sexual assault are major issues in the military. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the issue of rape and sexual assault in the military. The number of attacks for rape and sexual assault in the military are at an all-time high. Women have recently been allowed to fight on the front line. While this may be a huge achievement for women-kind, for this woman, it is a very scary thought. I am a women with female relatives, with female friends. I may be forced to join the military one day if a war breaks out and women are needed to protect the country. I would be happy to serve my country if I did not have to be scared of my fellow soldiers.
