Interdisciplinary Disciplines: Mathematics & Informatics Nichole Erickson Arizona State University During the process of determining my major here at Arizona State University, I contemplated many different disciplines. The first three years of my undergraduate coursework was focused on the study of software engineering after transferring from a community college where I had a liberal arts focus, but had taken many mathematics courses. The culmination of these studies, along with two summer internships, helped determine my current interdisciplinary degree focused in Mathematics and Informatics. While separate disciplines, they are interdisciplinary in nature, not just with each other but with many other disciplines as well. This paper will examine both disciplines, highlighting areas of similarity, with the purpose of emphasizing how the two are linked in an interdisciplinary way. The paper will also discuss how I hope to utilize these two areas in a future career. The first discipline, Mathematics, as one of the Natural Sciences, can be traced throughout human history. Formally, Mathematics is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations Algebra, arithmetic, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry are branches of mathematics.” (Merriam-Webster, 2017). Looking up the definition of mathematics you will get the simple definition, “the abstract science of number, quantity, and space”. I believe the definition of mathematics to be more than this. I believe mathematics is study of science using basic rules or truths, such as truth 1 + 1 = 2, applying these rules in different ways, since 1 + 1 = 2, we can expand on that and say 1 x 2 = 2, and then extrapolating upon those rules. We then can use these rules to apply and make models to represent the world we live in. Some of these models are used in engineering and physics where using these rules of mathematics to then design structures such as bridges, sky-scrapers, and roads.

Dunham focuses primarily on the works’ and achievements’ of early Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece in this section. These ancient societies, as they developed, produced mathematicians such as; Thales, Pythagoras, and Hippocrates, who turned a basic human intuition for space and quantity into applicable everyday mathematics. The primary influences driving the development of early mathematics were the issues of growing civilizations, most notably counting commodities, taxation, and the division of land equally, rather than a pure desire for understanding that is seen in mathematics today. These influences culminated in the development of early arithmetic and geometry.
