Interpersonal Conflict in Television Mandy Price COM 200: Interpersonal Communication Thursday, August 31, 2017 Michele Weber Interpersonal Conflict in Television Most relationships, whether they are romantic or not, usually start off harmoniously. Then as time passes conflicts arise. When these conflicts arise, one feels and expresses a variety of emotions that result in positive or negative relationship behaviors. When negative behaviors erupt, the relationship becomes threatened if positive behaviors do not form. This was the situation between Leonard and Penny on The Big Band Theory. I will discuss the conflict, how they began to handle it, how they ended up handling the conflict, and my opinions of …show more content…
He tells her about a couple years ago, when he was on a research ship in the North Sea, there was a lot of drinking and craziness, and a girl and they just kissed and nothing else because he stopped anything further from happening. Leonard also tells Penny how the situation still bothers him and he wanted her to know. Penny, obviously upset, asks why did Leonard tell her that when they are about to get married, because it makes her feel like he is trying to sabotage the wedding. Leonard states that they are getting married and he wanted a clean slate with no secrets. Leonard asks Penny if she would rather he not have told her, she says no she doesn’t want secrets between them either. Leonard and Penny seem to resolve this situation and decide to still get married, though you can tell Penny is still visibly upset. So, Leonard and Penny get married and find themselves in a hotel room for their honeymoon. Things are fine at first but when they start kissing, Penny cannot stop picturing Leonard with the other girl. Penny tries to forget it and they kiss again but Leonard breaks off the kiss and starts explaining. When Penny asks him if he felt guilty about kissing her, he says yes and he also feels guilty every time he sees her. As it turns out, the girl he kissed is a colleague of his. Penny gets very upset at this point and Leonard tries to reconcile but they end up going back to their apartment building, arguing, and going to their separate apartments. I want to
Deviance is a behavior, trait, belief, or other characteristic that violates a norm and causes a negative reaction (Ferris & Stein 154). The television Jane The Virgin embodies this sociological theory and is intended for an audience of young and older adults. Types of deviance that is featured is that Jane Villanueva who has hopes of being a teacher and author goes to the doctors for a routine physical examination. However, while there she accidentally gets artificially inseminated. The intended specimen was intended for a patient in the next room, the situation becomes even more shocking. In fact, the donor is Jane’s boss Rafael Solano whom she had a crush on a few years prior.
In chapter of the book Penny is at a family dinner in which the intention is to praise the approval of her ship design that is to be used by the British admiralty. However, during this dinner, that was supposed to be celebrating Penny success, a debate arose about Pennys ship design. In this debate her uncle Alfred argued that due to ship engineering being a job that is predominantly male orientated Pennys design could not possibly be of a good quality. Following these remarks Penny would then try to calm the situation by saying “If it makes anyone feel any better, I don't deserve any credit, the whole idea was Neils.” This shows Pennys reluctance to accept credit for her extraordinary work and rather give credit to a man in order to abide within the misogynistic societal expectations of the time. These expectations being that men were supposed to be the intellectuals while women could not possibly be successful in a white collared environment due to their lack of intellect. With this in mind, the prejudice that Penny faces in this scene is highlighted from comments made by the narrator in an earlier chapter of the book. These comments were “To be a woman at a predominantly masculine job she had to be more than good. she had to be better than her male colleagues; she had to work longer hours and be doubly careful as
Also, from the viewpoint of neuroscience, Leonard confabulates some of the stories on the day of the incident. He thought that his wife was killed by the assailant and wanted to take revenge all along; however, his wife was not dead at that time. It was Leonard himself who had killed his wife by giving her insulin shots more than
Penny does not stay faithful to Everett; she chooses to marry a suitor. Penny told their daughters that Everett was hit by a train which he was not, he was put in the chain gang. Everett stays faithful to Penny, when he breaks out of the chain gang he made it his mission to get back to Penny and his little girls. Penny was going to marry the suitor because she thought he could provide for her and the kids better than Everett could have. Penny only took Everett back because him and his men became famous by
“So they were married there before sundown…”(Zora Neale Hurston, 1937). Lastly, after Jody’s death, Janie marries Teacake by cause of the death of Jody and he makes her laugh. In the book, on page 97, it says, “She laughed and he gave her a little cut-eye look to get her meaning.” This means that Teacake flirts with Janie which makes her laugh and therefore she likes Teacake. Later she gets married to Teacake until he died. The three husbands are different from each other because Logan wanted her to help him work. On the other hand, Jody and Teacake both wanted to do the work for her. Teacke is different from Janie's other husbands because he doesn’t force her to do what he wants. Logan is different because he is her only husband that was still alive after Janie moved back to Maycomb. Janie learns a lot from her three husbands. For example, from Logan she learns that she needs to help her husband and she has to contribute to their marriage. Another lesson she learned, from Jody, was that when you’re married you need to be an obedient spouse. Lastly, she learned from Teacake, that you should trust your spouse and let them explain something before you falsely accuse
In the beginning, Janie meet Jody as she spies a good-looking, sharply dressed stranger ambling down the road. As he approaches her, she gives him something to drink and they sit and talk. Jody tells her where he’s from also, she tells him a little about herself as well. After he leaves she gets back to doing her chores. Soon after she meet Jody, they start each other every day after that. One day, Logan wants her to stop what she’s doing in the kitchen to help him outside, but she refuses. They then get into a argument because she doesn’t want to help, so now Janie has an excuse to leave Logan, because the argument, so now she able to
“You know what I’m going to write in your obituary? “Penny was a shallow woman who wanted you to think she was prettier and smarter than she really was”” (1. 142-143). Bill, fed up with his wife’s idée fixe on her obituary, retorts how he is perceiving her actions. Although Penny is illustrated as a shallow, conceited woman, and Bill, the opposite, they still share similarities. “You are a decent guy. That’s why I love you” 1.175). They both agree that Bill is a “decent guy” (1.174-175), and she loves him because of this. Similarly, Bill loves Penny in spite of her flaws and because “you can make me laugh even when I’ve had a rotten day” (1.176). Likewise, they both are similar in the way

The project I chose was project 3a.: Social Psychology on TV and the purpose of it was to evaluate a clip of a TV show and demonstrate how it illustrates social psychological concepts. I took an episode of a TV show named “The Big Bang Theory”, season 6 episode 4, and then evaluated a 4-minute clip in which the protagonist, Sheldon, is showing 2 social psychological concepts: prototypes and priming. I originally expected the outcome to be those concepts because I believed the actions in which Sheldon were participating in was in correlation to what the concepts are and because “The Big Bang Theory” is a show in which intellectual individuals interact with each other meaning for some interesting and awkward situations.
She told him that she never actually let herself believe that her daughter was going to die, even though it was as plain as day. And because of that, she never dealt with the real issues with her daughter. After several meetings Penny was finally able to see her own life and how this guilt she had was causing problems for the rest of the family. She had two sons. After finding out that neither of them lived at home, Dr. Yalom asked how Penny felt about it. This opened up doors for Penny and allowed her to take responsibility for the things in life that she could control. In the end, she had a good understanding of death and therefore was able to live life more fully by getting both kids back into the home and rejoining the family.
Throughout the movie, Leonard recalls information that he remembered before his incident, such as the insurance case he investigated that dealt with another form of anterograde amnesia. Leonard has the ability to carry on normal conversations with people, but after the conversation in over or if he gets distracted for more than a few moments, he forgets what he was doing. This is because “short term memory is generally spared, which means that the individual may be able to carry on a conversation; but as soon as he is distracted, the memory of the conversation fades” (“Anterograde”). In one scene, Leonard is arguing with Carrie-Ann Moss’ character about her boyfriend. Moss’
A major research concern for behavioral psychologists and sociologists today circles an integral part of the American family routine and life. Something that has become so inset into homes that it would be rare to find one without it. Research has shown a hidden danger lurking in our homes, and the origin may surprise you. Television has been around since the early 1950’s but behaviorists have just recently begun to start studying the effects these machines may have on children, social interaction and families. Research has begun to show negative consequences of television on children’s development and socialization proving that it does reduce and affect social interaction.
She first met Jankyn when she was still married to her fourth husband. While walking one day, she lied to him and told him that he had captivated her heart and she would marry him if she were to become a widow. Then, at her fourth husband’s funeral, she met Jankyn again and fell in love with him, getting married at the end of the month. Thinking she could handle his youth, she ended up regretting the vast age difference. She abused him because of her superiority by age; for this reason, she despised the large age difference.
Today’s society is heavily influenced by television. The violence disrupts a child’s learning process and can alter the moral beliefs that an older person has. Children view more violence on Saturday mornings than any other time. The cartoons aimed at little children influence youngsters to mimic violent acts because their parents do not fully explain the effects of the stunts. It is pathetic that in such a technology based society, such a simple thing as television can have a negative effect on people.
In order to overcome one’s malady, one has to interpret it at first. Mina Das also suffers from a malady. Her malady is deep-rooted and she had been suffering from it since seven years. For the first time in her life, she reveals to Mr.Kapasi that her younger son Bobby was not her husband’s. Raj and Mina got married very young. She was overwhelmed when she conceived very early. She spent her days in her house, nursing the baby and taking care of the house. Raj became very busy with his teaching assignments and life became dull and drab for Mina. Her problems became more complicated when she conceived Bobby because of a sexual encounter with one of Raj’s friend. She kept the secret for eight years and finally revealed it to Mr. Kapasi. She thought that Mr.Kapasi is the right one who could interpret her malady and give proper solutions to her problems- “Eight years, Mr.Kapasi, I’ve been in pain eight years. I was hoping you could help me feel better, say the right thing. Suggest some kind of remedy.” (IOM,65). Mr.Kapasi, because of his typical Indian background and patriarchal ideology could not understand the depth of her problem. Instead he was disgusted. He felt that it was his duty to assist Mrs.Das and said- “Is it really pain you feel, Mrs.Das, or is it guilt?”(IOM,66) Mina Das was not ready to accept that it was her guilt that made her suffer. Mr.kapasi could not understand the fact that it was because of her unhappiness and dullness in her marriage that caused her to have an extra-marital sexual relationship. He considers it as an act of unfaithfulness towards her husband. In the story, Jhumpa Lahiri shows how the Indians and Americans are caught in the middle of two different cultures. Mr.Kapasi wanted to have a close relationship with Mrs.Das, he fantasized about her. But as soon as, he came to know about her secrets of the affair, Mr.Kapasi was disgusted. Mr.kapasi’s relationship
