Lisa Nolting, Iowa State University’s Dining Dietitian, is someone I consider a leader. I decided to interview Lisa because I have gotten to know Lisa pretty well since I have a dairy allergy and I get to see her pretty often. Lisa is a very honest and respectable person, not to mention a very motivated individual in her day to day life. I picked Lisa to interview because I already knew Lisa pretty well and it wouldn’t be awkward like it probably would have been if I interviewed someone I didn’t know. Plus, I can relate more during the interview since I have a food allergy and constantly going to the special diet kitchen. That is why I picked Lisa to interview about leadership styles and learn what she values as a leader.
As the Dining Dietitian, she is responsible for making sure that there is always something to eat no matter their dietary accommodations. Because of this, a wide range of dietary accommodations are in the Special Diet Kitchen at Union Drive Marketplace. Another accommodation that is available is NetNutrition, which is a program that is widely used by campuses across the nation. It takes the information of the products used and generates nutrition content for the foods served on campus. This is a good tool to keep track of your nutrient intake in an easy and friendly way. While researching the topic of food allergy protections in schools and its effects on unaffected families, I found a large amount of information on food allergies and what we should do but very little on the effects on others. I began my research by looking for the scholarly articles that detailed the medical professions suggested handling of food allergies in a school setting. I discovered an article published in the American Academy of Pediatrics Journal titled Clinical Report- Management of Food Allergy in the School Setting by Dr. Scott M. Sicherer. In this paper he highlights both what the treatment and prevention should be for adolescent children in just about every environment including school. The article starts off with giving us a baseline for food allergies and the dangers. He notes that 1 in 25 people suffer from food allergies and the most at risk group is preschool age
Self leadership through personal learning and reflection “provides a foundation for effective leadership skills” (Watson, 2004). The Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) includes self leadership as one of it’s five core leadership competencies, which is defined as “The Lead Self” domain. As part of Leading Self, effective leaders must demonstrate: self awareness, managing self, developing self and demonstrating character. (CCHL, 2010).

Being nominated for the Joanne Woodard Leadership Award has been one of the highlights of my semester thus far. I am truly honored to be nominated for an award that is a demonstration of my ability to lead ethically, serve as a role model, and use my influence to advance African and African American culture on campus. Having held different positions in various campus community centers, my goal is for my leadership style to reflect the missions of the African American Cultural Center, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders.
My leadership style is problem solver; this leadership style offers me the opportunity to utilize the knowledge and experience of my followers. I believe that I am more of this leadership style because I tend to accept input from group members when making decisions and solving problems. I do this because I feel that everyone in the group have something tangible to contribute to the group, and sometimes they might have access to key information that can help in my decision making. When I think about the type of leader I would like to be, there is one supervisor that always comes to mind because of the positive environment she cultivated. In researching the different leadership styles for this assignment, I believe that this is the style that she used with her staff. I was interested in learning more about transformational leadership and how I can cultivate this style in the way that I lead my current team as well as the way in which I lead future teams.
I define leadership as the ability to provide strength and coverage to support a Sailor, regardless of rank. The ability to instill Core Values, provide training and the tools a Sailor will need to excel in both their professional and personal life.
