Buck is a big dog. He is a St. Bernard and Scottish Shepherd mix. He is very large and weighs a little under 140 pounds. He’s courageous and fearless. But he is also loving even though he is rough and growls alot. Buck is a sled dog. He was stolen from his owner in Santa Clara Valley California. His new owners are Francois and Perrault. They are looking for gold during the Yukon gold rush. He is the leader of his sled team. Because he killed the previouse leader Spitz. The other dogs agree that Buck is a better leader then Spitz was because Buck disciplines the other dogs when they do something wrong.Buck is a big dog. He is a St. Bernard and Scottish Shepherd mix. The icy winds may chill one to the bone. The raging blizzard makes it hard to do anything. Welcome to the Arctic. Buck, from The Call of the Wild by Jack London, and Tyler, from the movie Never Cry Wolf, had to survive in the Arctic wilderness. Both Buck and Tyler had to adapt to the environment and a transformation took place within them.
Buck is the main character of this novel. The other animals in the novel are Buck, Curly, Spitz, Dave, Billee, Joe, Sol-leks, Dolly, Pike, Dub, Skeet, and Nig. Buck’s mother was a Scotch Sheppard, and his father was a huge Saint Bernard. Buck was a civilized dog, but answers the call of the wild and becomes one with the wild. Curly was Buck’s companion on the boat trip to the North. Curly is described in the novel as a “good-natured Newfoundland.” Curly does not survive long; however, Buck learns a gruesome lesson when he sees how easily Curly was murdered while trying to be friendly with Spitz. Spitz was the dog that assassinated Curly and becomes Buck’s most bitter enemy. He was terminated later in the novel by Buck in a dog brawl. Buck’s victory entitled him to take over the lead of the dogs that belonged to Spitz. The dog fight illustrated to me Buck’s ability to survive even among the most primitive elements. Dave, Billee, Joe, Sol-leks, Dolly, Pike, and Dub are the other dogs that serve on the dogsled team with Buck. Finally, Skeet and Nig were two of John Thornton’s dogs that he owned before he rescued and adopts
Buck was better off as a Housedog because he had people who loved and cared for him. Buck always got to hang out with the judge’s daughters, sons, and also his grandchildren. They would go fishing, swimming, and hunting. It’s such a shame that buck had to leave the judge and his family because when buck was a sled dog life wasn’t so pleasant for him. He had to fight, steal, and kill even though he didn’t want to. He faced many challenges and obstacles that most normal dogs don’t really have to go through like when buck got kidnapped from his loving and caring family back in Santa Clara Valley to a place where survival is the only thing you must face! Life was very brutal and cold for him. Buck was one of the bravest dogs out there to have gone
I think Buck should be a sled dog. Buck should be a sled dog because he learns how to survive and stay strong. He also learned how to stand up for himself. On this unexpected journey, Buck learned obedience no matter outcome. It’s not safe for the judge and his family to keep a wild animal, especially a Pitbull. Although he was the judge’s “pet” he belongs with his kind, in the wild. Soon, Buck will be as large as his father, he is not finished growing. In chapter 3 Buck said he liked the taste of the blood in his he wants to kill. Set Buck
In the 1890’s during the Klondike Gold Rush, strong sled dogs were needed. Buck was stolen from his house, Judge Miller’s place in Santa Clara Valley, and was given to a man. Next, he was sold to two men named Francois and Perrault to be a sled dog. As Buck saw other dogs fighting with other dogs, he learned the law of club and fang and started fighting with other dogs. Buck
More characters of this story would be Spitz, the dog-sled leader that didn’t like Buck and had been killed by buck after trying to kill him. Another character would be Curly, a dog who took a liking to Buck ,but in the end died to some mysterious odds. Some themes associated with the story are Primitivity, Knowledge and Wisdom, Suffering, and Perseverance. (Shmoop Editorial Team)
Buck has shown momentous physical change in the first fourth of the book.He is a St. Bernard-Scotch shepherd dog mix who weighs about 140 pounds and is about 4 years old.Through the story to about chapter 4 where I am in the book Buck changes tremendously. In the first chapter he is a fine house dog, spoiled even. But, through the course of his kidnapping and Buck’s transformation into a wild canine he gets more ragged and much skinnier, and after the wild husky attack on chapter three Buck is very injured. In short, Buck goes from a spoiled house canine to a bruised ragged savage. Buck’s appearance may have changed, but Buck’s behavior also changed.
Since Buck convinces all of the dogs to turn on Spitz, it proves he’s a great leader. Last Buck falls in love with John Thornton. For example, when Thornton shakes his head bucks knows he’s playing with him out of love. Since Buck and Thornton are inseparable and in love, they can't be broken apart. In conclusion, Buck can continue his quest because he has good owners, has become the lead dog, and he has a loving
I believe Buck is better off being as a sled dog than a house dog. My reasons for this is because it taught him how to survive out in the cold. Also, it’s starting to bring out his inner wolf-self out. A lesson he learned was how to survive out in the cold weather. He had to learn how to keep warm, and so he had seen Billiee buried underneath the snow to help him keep warm. The passage also states that Buck “mastered his work so well that his mates stopped nagging him”. Buck gained the respect by the other sled dogs. It also states how François’ whip snapped less and Perrault even honored Buck. All because of how he learned to survive as a sled dog and because he learned the law of the club.
The sled drivers wanted to select a new team-dogs leader, and Sol-leks was chosen. Buck did not approve that as Sol-Leks being a leader, he tried possible ways to become a leader. Francois and Perrault attacked and chased Buck for several times in their long trail journey but they fail. The drivers noticed Buck’s strength and capability of beating the other dogs. Buck was chosen to be the leader of the team-dogs. Buck showed off his strength and power as being a leader. He punished Pike for not being lazy in the trial, he wanted every dog to be strong enough for that trial. The dogs including Buck suffered a lot in that trial, he crossed a lot of miles through Alaska which ill-conditions were present there; Dave was too weak and he was about
Buck is a mix breed between a St. Bernard and a shepherd. He lives on the wealthy estate of Judge Miller during the late 1890's. Buck is quickly sold into sled dogging and is sent to the Klondike region of Alaska. And there he was shaped into a sled dog and being low on food and rest
First, to get there Buck needs to be an amazing sled dog which he already is which ends up making him leader. For example, learns common extra food rubs, etc,. Since Buck earns francis and perruls respect can equal recognition. Second, other dogs follow Buck’s lead. For instance, Buck protects other dogs from Spitz in a revolt. Since Buck commands other dogs to disobey Spitz. Last, Buck finds love with John Thornton. For Example, Thornton shaking his head, Buck play Bites. Since Buck and Thornton are inseparable. In conclusion, Buck fathers his quest by gaming his master recognition status among his peers, and the love John Thornton
Buck was a pampered dog that just thought he was everything! Buck’s home was a big house in Santa Clara Valley. When you read deeper in “The Call of the Wild” you will realize that Buck is a big St. Bernard and Scotch mix. Buck’s dad was a very big dog but, Buck only weighted one hundred and forty pounds. Buck wasn’t a kennel dog, but he wasn’t a house dog either.
In the Call of the Wild, by Jack London, a young Newfoundland mix embarks on a journey through the Alpine. Battling both the elements, and the pull of civilization, Buck must fight his way to the top in the quest for alpha dog. Not only battling civilization, but his comrades as well, Buck must be the strongest and the smartest to prevail. In the harsh world of the frozen North Buck gains ingenuity, lost through years of domestication.
* Buck –a proud and powerful dog, half St Bernard and half shepherd dog, who begins life on a comfortable Californian estate as a family pet, yet soon changes when he is stolen and sold to work as a sled dog in the frozen North.
