For an American citizen my freedom is determined by the government, making me question if I am truly free. Arguably many Americans have a political dispute over our free, if our country is free or not. No doubt, I am by the side that thinks we aren’t free. We aren’t even close to being free, we aren’t a country who based our idea of being free and let people come into our country to feel safe and to feel at home. “The land of the free and the home of the brave” (Francis Scott Key) is the national anthem, it is saying men and women are free and we are a strong country that doesn’t give up on each other. In fact, we aren't even the top 15th freest country in the world, that should mean something. As a country we say we are free, yet they’re the people that control us says a different meaning. Above all we made this a free country and a place to call “home”. Strangely enough, we left Britain because the King had the power to overrule anyone, he was powerful and our people needed to leave. As a result, we needed a place where you control yourself, and do what makes you happy without all the intense power of the king. We now have come back to the overpowering ruling from someone around you. Now we will always have someone that control you like your parents, your grandparents, your teachers, and your boss . Similar to people is the objects that control us like money and guns. We will never obtain back the freedom we once had because we will never have the opportunity to
The United States of America is a free nation. Each and every American citizen here has rights
Freedom is how we are living, it’s how we stand, and it’s how we are free to speak out. In my opinion freedom means the power to act, speak, live, and think as we want without any harm or limit from somebody. Everyday citizens are working and doing hard labor to try and keep America civilized. I highly respect people who work and make an effort to maintain our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. America is Where everybody wants to go and is why people leave their hometown because of freedom. America is supposedly the land of the free. I feel though as if our nation is falling apart. As stated by John F. Kennedy, “America is filled with both crisis and opportunity.” This meaning you can make your “life experience” in America good or bad but there’s always hope. America can fall apart with terrorist attacks or events like 9/11 but these events is how we make allies and how the citizens of America work together as a team no matter your race, gender, experience, or status there is a job to be completed and that is the main reason how America gets stronger.
An American essayist, H.L. Mencken stated, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants be safe”. I disagree with this statement because an “average man” wants to live. In order to live you must have two necessities; freedom and safety. I believe neither is more important than one another because being free gives you the opportunity to a safe nation, and a safe nation allows you to be free. You cannot live a life without exploring and growing because that would not be considered living. On the other hand, you cannot expect to be free without safety around you.
True freedom is not something that can be given. It is something that every single person must discover for themselves. If a person were set free, though still thought of themselves as a slave, they are a slave. America is a country that thrives on freedom. Though numerous people throughout the United States take this privilege for granted.
Freedom is defined as the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement. It is the power to determine action without restraint and the exemption from external control, interference, and regulation. Americans, these days, commonly regard their society as the freest and the best in the world. Their understanding of freedom has been shaped and based upon the founding fathers’ belief that all people are equal and that the role of the government is to protect each person’s basic “inalienable” rights. The United States Constitution’s Bill of Rights assures individual rights including freedom of speech, press, and religion. America has changed dramatically from the country our founding fathers discovered. Some could even argue that
There are many ways to describe what freedom is; in fact Webster’s dictionary offers nine different explanations of what the word means. “A right or the power to engage in certain actions without control or interference,” is one of the most ubiquitous definitions. There are many ways to describe freedom and American history has portrayed it in very contradictory manners. In the late 1700’s, it was very obvious that America’s forefathers sought freedom as they based their revolution on the principal of emancipation but it was only a short while later that the freedoms of others within the country were being inhibited by slavery. Slavery inhibits civil liberties and in a land of equal
The Land of the Free is a very ironic way in describing America. Freedom no longer means to be free but to be safe, and in order to be safe, according to the government, some of our freedom had been taken away. Documents like NSC 68, created by United Stated National Security Council, and the Patriot Act, passed by Congress, were created for America to help the people live safe. After certain events in history America had to take action to prevent any future enemy attacks on US soil.
The America I believe in is a free America. The America I believe in will always be a free America. Like Ronald Regan said “Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction” so if we continue to fight the good fight we will have a free America. A free America is a great America in my book. I will take having freedom over being locked away for saying what I believed any day of the
America is the home the of free and brave, but how much freedom can someone have? If you ask someone what is freedom? The answer you’ll receive will probably be different from your own. The word freedom can be defined in many ways by different people. Just like any other opinion, no one thinks alike. Some people now in America feel that they’re free. On the contrary, there are individuals that can surely tell you that they don’t have rights that others have due to a technicality. In the past, there has been a history of brave people who stand up to the government to receive the rightful freedom that belongs to them and others. Some of those individuals shared similar qualities but also had their differences as well. The changes that some of those individuals left improved the daily lifestyles of the community in general. Their acts weren’t approved by most of the government. Although the actions brought improvement to society to receive rightful freedom for all it took some time to accept the balance of freedom and social & civic responsibilities.
Freedom comes at a cost, and so some say it is not free, but what really is free in this world. Too many people today expect free things, but liberty, the right to bear arms and the right to come and go as you please do come at a cost.
In today's society, freedom isn't something most people tend to notice. When an American hears the word “freedom”, what do they usually think about? For many people, it's probably something along the lines of a barbecue in the backyard on Memorial Day. But to others, it's so much more. There are many families who celebrate Memorial Day and Veterans Day at the cemetery. Their child made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation and didn't get to make it home. Other families spend the holidays in the hospital with their kid who was shot defending the country. Some might would argue that “It was their prerogative to go join the military and get shot at”. But really, was it their fault? America loses so many brave and courageous soldiers on average. Not to mention the hundreds who commit suicide every year. These soldiers are committed to keeping our country safe everyday so normal citizens can have those backyard barbecues or what have you. But yet, so many people don't take the time to thank them for what they do. America is the most free country because the military is defending this amazing, beautiful country from the evils of the
This is supposed to be America, the home of the brave and the land of the free but what does it actually mean to be free. To me, being free is the freedom to make my own decisions. I decide what I want to believe in. I decide if I want to risk my life by not wearing a seatbelt. I decide if I want to ruin my health by smoking cigarettes. I decide who I want to have sex with and how I will pay for it. I decide if I want my kids to sit in the front seat of my car or in the back end of my pickup truck. and I decide if I want to get drunk or stoned.
Malcolm X once said,” You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” This means that for a man to be happy, he has to have the right to choose. “Land of the free” means everyone in a nation has their freedom. The US endured many hardships, both politically and socially, to become “land of the free”.
We, as Americans are free, but, of course, we should not be robbed of that freedom. It's gotten progressively worse, and now, than the presidential election is right around the corner, America, I feel, is about to fall. Nevertheless, America is a great country within itself. But what I'm trying to say is, we should patch it the butchered trail we left behind.
Freedom has a large range of meaning. The encyclopedia Britannica defines freedom as “the quality or state of being free, and the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action” (Britannica). In the American society there is a lot of emphasis on freedom, and the right to be free, but one must question to what extent we are truly “free”.
