What Does Freedom Mean To Me?

Today we accept that freedom is a basic right human right but what exactly is freedom. 1On one hand, there is physical freedom. People who are not imprisoned or enslaved are free. On the other hand, there is freedom as a the right to act, speak or think what you want. People cannot reach their full potential if they are not free in both senses of the word.

American freedom can be a good thing or a bad thing. Freedom allows you to be your own individual and take ownership in regards to oneself. In addition, there comes a lot of responsibilities not many citizens are willing to take on. Having freedom isn’t just catergorized into being just one thing.

There are many ways to describe what freedom is; in fact Webster’s dictionary offers nine different explanations of what the word means. “A right or the power to engage in certain actions without control or interference,” is one of the most ubiquitous definitions. There are many ways to describe freedom and American history has portrayed it in very contradictory manners. In the late 1700’s, it was very obvious that America’s forefathers sought freedom as they based their revolution on the principal of emancipation but it was only a short while later that the freedoms of others within the country were being inhibited by slavery. Freedom has a large range of meaning. The encyclopedia Britannica defines freedom as “the quality or state of being free, and the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action” (Britannica). In the American society there is a lot of emphasis on freedom, and the right to be free, but one must question to what extent we are truly “free”.

Freedom, is one of the greatest things on Earth yet only a few people experience it. Webster’s Dictionary defines freedom as: “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action.” Around the world, people will live their whole lives without being completely free. I am fortunate enough to live in a country that is free. I am very thankful that I live in America, because having freedom is what makes this country great.

Freedom isn’t given, it’s most definitely taken. There are far more factors playing against freedom than there are supporting freedom such as the greed for power, the countless secrets of multiple governments, and segregation. It may seem easy to some, but freedom is a blood, guts, and glory kind of deal. No country has ever received freedom before battling in a gruesome war or developing an uproar.

Merriam Webster states freedom means, the quality or state of being free: such as liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another: independence (Webster, 2017 p.1). Freedom didn’t come easy to the enslaved, it took the fight of others and the enslaved to gain equality. Freedom to slaves began because of many abolitionists who wanted to fight for slaves because they didn’t agree with slavery. One major individual was Abraham Lincoln who fought and signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which allow the slaves on paper to be free in states of Confederacy. Even thought slaves were freed, it didn’t mean that their troubles were gone, freed slaves still struggled for equality.

Freedom is America. American is where “ All men are created equal. That they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”. We can choose our freedoms and paths we take in life. “Everyone's freedoms matter.” America is the “beacon of freedom and opportunity”, You don't have to be rich, or have a college degree if you fail. America will still grant you the freedom to succeed. Are Americans truly free? Many people would say no they are not truly free and others would say that they are. We barely have any rights and we have to listen to others . Americans are not truly free what so ever. Here are a couple reasons why we are not free.

As you can see freedom can be very different to many people cultures and even nations because for one thing being free might just be over looked as playing it safe by something as major as America wanting independence. America did not know its full potential until we had a war and decided that we would no longer be ruled and realized how much greater we were than the so called Great Brittan. Just to soon become a super power nation Who struck fear on even its original creators who could no longer hold us down, after all this s the lad of life Liberty and Pursuit of happiness.

The freedom that our Founding Father fought for back then is now the key to being an American, to be an American is to have freedom. To ask why we fight is to ask why do leaves fall. It is in our nature as human being. A better question is why do we fight-- to protect, for freedom and for independent.

Did you know that there are 130,000 to 200,000 homeless veterans every year? That number is way too high. I think that veterans are the main symbol of freedom. They are the ones that have fought for it. If we didn’t have veterans we wouldn’t have our freedom. My Grandpa is a veteran of the Vietnamese War. Every day he talks about what he did in the war and I thank him sometimes for giving up something for our freedom. Freedom to me also means being able to wake up and go to a Kansas State Wildcat game every Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, also if I didn’t have freedom I wouldn’t be able to play video games and play football outside with my friends or family. Or are we slaves? If we assess our lives, the control over our movements, our schooling, our earnings, we might become aware that what we call freedom is actually, liberties. We have liberties. To me this means we are allowed to do things, within limits - we have limitations placed upon us by documentation, credentials, licenses, etc. We are, in all respects, not free.
