Gestures benefit the receiver and sender, often taking the place of words. This type of nonverbal communication can be used to convey an understanding, aid in revealing complex ideas and to get attention. Gestures can be done to show listening and comprehension, such as a head nod. These can also help to explain, answer or promote what is being said verbally in a visual way. An example of this would be in a conversation with someone. The person speaking may gestures money by rubbing their fingers to their thumb, to highlight the subject of money which is being spoken upon. Another example would be in the discussion of distance or large size extending hands and arms out from the body, thus emphasizing the extreme amount being discussed.

A few days ago I took a trip to my local mall and took a seat at the food court. My objective was to observe individuals engaging in non-verbal communication and document what I witnessed. After only a few minutes I became aware of a couple sitting within public distance, about 15-20ft away from me. They were having an argument about how the male was being cold and unaffectionate. While observing them I realized they were using various gestures while arguing. I will inform you of what type they were and what they were conveying.

Body language can say a great deal more than the words we use. There are three main types of body language that you need to think about as part of your speaking and listening skills - eye contact, body position and gesture and movement.

Almost half of our communications involves people’s use of body language to convey their thoughts, whether or not those happen unconsciously or consciously; understanding body language is very important for daily communication with one another. Since Eastern University is a small Christian college, students and professors have the opportunity to have better and intimate relationships with each other. Therefore, professors should not only use more efficient body languages to interact with students individually but also use various types of body language to improve class atmosphere. Furthermore, the use of body language can help international students have a better understanding of the American education system.

You should make them feel comfortable and at ease, think about what they are trying to say to you, what is their point that they are trying to put across. Body language, facial expressions and gestures are very important in effective communication, and should be thought about in any situation and environment to help people perceive what you are trying to express.

It is important to recognize that body language may vary between individuals, and between different cultures and nationalities.
