How Logical is the Essay
Regarding to the essay question “Is Hell exothermic or endothermic,” though the answer that the student gave was not exactly “logical” per se, but was certainly well-deserved for the grade that he got due to his creative and innovative way of thinking.
First, the question itself was based on the premise that Hell does exist, which we know most of the scientists do not agree, as well as the existence of Heaven and God/gods. And since Hell is not to be found in a place where we can probe, and no one has ever been there and came back, nobody can tell for sure how does Hell “functions”. Thus we know that the intension of this question was not actually to find the answer of the operation of Hell, but to test on how the
Since ancient civilizations people have been trying to explain what goes on after death. Throughout history, many cultures have had different theories about what happens. Two distinguished ideas of where people go after death are the underworld and Hell. The idea of the underworld came from the Greeks and Romans. A few famous works by the Greeks and Romans that talk about the underworld are The Iliad, The Aeneid, and, The Odyssey. A famous work that discusses Hell is Dante's Inferno. Hell is an accepted part of the Christianity religion and taught all over the world. The two beliefs are very similar but some distinct differences can be seen.
Who is Dante? He was a man that had a desire to find the truths of heaven and earth even from a very young age; his goal was to understand the three worlds in his mind of hell, purgatory and paradise so that he could find the true everlasting happiness. In Dante’s age there was not really a separation between church and state. “Dante 's philosophical view was also a political view. In Dante 's time, there were two major political factions, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. Originally, the Ghibellines represented the medieval aristocracy, which wished to retain the power of the Holy Roman Emperor in Italy, as well as in other parts of Europe. The Ghibellines fought hard in this struggle for the nobility to retain its feudal powers over the land and the people in contrast, the Guelphs, of which Dante was a member, were mainly supported by the rising middle class, represented by rich merchants, bankers, and new landowners. The enemy was politically, philosophically, and theologically wrong — and thus a Heretic” He was a supporter of the papacy which was a direct opposition to the Holy Roman Emperor, therefore putting himself in danger of his beliefs.
Love, generations, cultures, and family are the main theme to talk about in shorts stories, and in the story of “Hell-Heaven” by Jhumpa Lahiri, that is not the exception. However, it is an unusual and very enjoyable story where readers can identify themselves with it because the main characters are common people who have the same problems as many of us. If I have to summarize the story in one sentence, I can say that it describes the experiences of people who come from other cultures to the USA, and it is nuanced with an impossible love to make it more interesting and real. Also, the author divided the different parts of it with four important events which mark the transition
A human's innate reaction to another person’s pain is piteous. We don’t like seeing others in pain, and often make advances to help them. On the other hand, we may see one who is in pain due to their own detriment, and have a conflicted heart over if their pain is validated according to their sin. Most of the human population choses to overlook the bad, and find the good in others, despite their previous actions. Similarly, in the novel The Inferno as well as the film adaptation of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, the characters in the novels feel pity for and forgive the ones who had sinned in their previous lives. The immediate reaction in one’s heart for another who is suffering is pity and forgiveness, despite the fact that they may
Robert Herrick, an English poet, once said, “Hell is no other but a soundlesse pit, where no one beame of comfort peeps in it.” Picture any type of Hell with relief, happiness, or even the smallest crack of a smile. There is no place. In fact, one can only think of the complete opposite, whether it is a Hell filled with neglect, pain, disgust, or a never-ending life of horror. This is the place created by Dante Alighieri; The Inferno is exactly the type of Hell where no person would want to be. Even those who acted upon the lightest of sins suffered greatly. While each realm contained a different sinner, the punishment that each were forced to face was cruel, repulsive, and sometimes rather disgusting. Through grieving tears without an
Namely, hell is a place where the inhabitants suffer inconceivable torment for all eternity. The Bible plainly argues this, and to believe that the Bible does otherwise will require improper hermeneutics. One of the prime examples that reveal the severity of hell is Calvary: Jesus died a severe death to save humanity from a severe torment. Additionally, a loving God does not reject the idea of hell since He is just in punishing the infinite crime of
A major theological problem exist as it related to Christ descending into hell to take the keys of death. Although the Apostle’s Creed points out that Jesus descended down into hel, His descent was not about suffering, but about a triumph victory over Satan. In order to ascertain the truth behind the afterlife, the validity of hell has to be established.
In Dante’s Inferno, Hell is a place that is pre- organized for each punishment; when a person sins, they are given a specific punishment made for that sin. Whereas in What Dreams May Come, Hell is a place where a person makes a Hell of their own, it is what they make of it. In the movie, Annie exists in a level where her Hell is living in a world without her husband and children, the biggest punishment she could have. Another difference between the two stories was how in Dante’s Inferno, Heaven is premade, but in What Dreams May Come, a person gets to have a Heaven in which they have made, it is a place where everything a person could have ever wanted, is going to be there. Two similarities that were interesting in the movie and in the poem
Did you know the government of the United States of America respects the chance to answer to the Committee against Torture on measures offering impact to its endeavors under the Tradition against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. (CAT/C/4/Rev.2).
For thousands of years, people have had numerous different viewpoints of the characteristics of Hell. Some people believe that Hell is hot and fiery while others believe Hell is cold and frozen over. Although numerous people believe that Hell is fiery because many religious texts describe Hell as that, Hell is frozen because it provides a fair punishment, it surprises the readers, and it represents being far from God.
Hell. The four lettered word that trembles in the throats of men and children alike; The images of suffering, flame pits and blood, the smell of burning flesh, the shrieking of those who have fallen from grace. For centuries man has sought out ways to cleanse his soul, to repent for his sins and possibly secure his passage into paradise, all evoked by the fear of eternal damnation and pain. The early 20th century philosopher and existentialist writer Jean-Paul Sartre saw life as an endless realm of suffering and a complete void of nothingness. His pessimistic ideals of life followed through to his beliefs on death, as death for him was a final nothingness. If death was a final nothingness, Sartre's view of hell was really a final
The idea of making up a "Hell", or inferno, is not an experience in which I, even in my wildest thoughts, had started to imagine. Call me an optimist, but the idea of imagining Hell never appealed to me. However, as I read through the Bible, I have come across many images of hell and will now attempt to create a partial picture.
In both the old times and modern time of Christianity, one of the main controversial topics has surrounded one single word. Hell. Some people hear it and thing noting of it. Others shutter at the name. But everyone has questions about it, whether hell is real or a fable, eternal or temporary, physical or spiritual. Being in the Baptist community since birth, I have believed in a hell since I can remember because “to believe in God and not in hell is ultimately to disbelieve in the reality of human choices.” (Ross Douthat). My definition of hell comes straight from the Bible. That there will be “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Mathew 13:42) and that God will say, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil
In Dante’s Inferno, we followed Dante as he narrates his decent and observations of hell. A wonderful part of that depiction is his descriptions of the creative yet cruel punishments that each of the different sinners receive. This story is an integral part of literary history, and even if I were to have the imagination and ability of Dante Alighieri, I don’t believe I would change this tried and true version known universally.
The Inferno by Dante is a story of a mans voyages through the treacherous depths of hell. Dante is a man who has strayed from the path of a catholic way of life. Now he needs to travel through hell to reach the virtuous path that will take him to heaven. He is guided through hell by a man who is in limbo, the first circle of hell, named Virgil. Virgil takes him through hell and shows him people suffering for the sins that they have committed. Together they travel through the nine different stages of hell observing who is in each stage, what there punishment is, and what sins they committed to get there. Virgil was sent to guide Dante through hell by Beatrice who is the love of Dante’s life. Beatrice plays a
