Interpersonal Communication is a very important ingredient in making strong, healthy relationships. Communicating is how we get a better understanding of one another’s perception of things, as well as how we help someone to better understand ours. We need to express our feelings in relationships and know that they are reciprocated. Not communicating leads to problems and misunderstandings. People need to learn to understand what the other person is trying to communicate. To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that “interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable” due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person’s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships.

People have to interact and communicate in a society. According to the book, interpersonal communication is defined as “the exchange of symbols used, at least in part, in the joint pursuit of interpersonal goals” (Canary, Cody and Manusov, 2008, p. 4).

Sommer et al. (2013) Communication is an interactive process between two or more people who send and receive messages to each other. The following is a simplified sample of communication; stimulus for information, comfort or advice, the sender initiates contact, the message is sent or expressed, variety of media used such as hearing, visual, touch or smell used and then feedback is received. Factors that affect communication vary such as personal (emotional, social, cultural, language differences), environmental (background noise, lack of privacy or proper accommodation), and relationship factors (communication influenced by status) can interfere with communication.

To begin with, this paper will include seven different concepts that were learned from interpersonal communication. Starting off with the different communication needs and finishing with deception within relationships. To mention a few, also included in the paper are how perception affects communication, Knapp’s stages of relational development and Gottman’s four horsemen of the apocalypse. Each concept will be defined as by the book, Interpersonal Communication, by Kory Floyd (2011). Furthermore, concepts learned will be discussed on how this affects our faith and communication with future relationships.

Our interpersonal communication is communication that strives us to create and maintain relationships with others in our life. My interpersonal communication is solely based on my self-concept, self-image, how I perceive myself, my bad and good qualities, and my non-verbal communication.

Giving and getting feedback can be both positive and negative in which both ways can be difficult to hear. It can even be difficult to understand depending on how the feedback is being given and received. Either way giving and getting feedback can be discovered in many aspects of our daily lives and mastering this element of communication allows us to become more meaningful communicators. Through my research for this paper, I have been able to examine many variable environments in which giving and getting feedback can be found.

The rise in social media usage leads to a drop in interpersonal communication. The lack of interpersonal relationships remains to be a focus of many research studies determining if this leaves social media users more or less connected to peers. One study compares the time spent on the Internet for communication purposes and non-communication purposes in regards to how this affects friendship quality (Selfhout, Branje, Delsing, Bogt, & Meeus, 2009). Results from this study find that the most depressive subjects recorded are from people who report low friendship quality and mainly use the Internet for non-communication purposes. Researchers also study whether the quality of existing friendships suffers due to the depressive nature of the participants

Successful interpersonal communications are achieved thru communication competence. There are many advantageous functions of interpersonal communication but with those enablers comes a number of challenges that will require conceptual understanding, intentional effort, and practice to overcome. These barriers increase the number of communications that will be misperceived and improperly decoded. Ultimately, leading to the inability to be able to share meaning with one another.
