Gender defined roles are continuously adapting to the new societal norms of the era. There is a surplus of historical events that have reimagined the traditional expectations of a man or women.

Gender roles are considered to be good by a large number of people. The reason for this is that most people think that everyone should act like their gender, and that gender roles make it easier to set their actions straight.

A good example of Gender Role is Mulan when she had to disguise herself before joining the Chinese Army because a female in the army would have been a total disgrace, they would have lost face. She went to take her father’s place, because he had been injured in the previous war and had permanent damage to his leg, but the misconceptions about females going to war would not allow her to go as herself (Souci, 1998). A persons limitations as to what they can do should be based on the individual not a person’s gender. In this movie, Mulan proved just that. Men and women are reversing roles more and more. Conventionally, in numerous societies including the western society, it is supposed that females are more encouraged at any platform than the males. It is believed that for the development of a society, females should be treated in an encouraged way because encouragement of the females help in the betterment of society. Earlier, it was considered that females should remain at home and they should maintain the household things rather than working outside because outside work is only for the males, but it was a traditional way of treating women, which has been changed now.

Throughout history, gender roles have been the foundation that determines the course of a civilization. These gender roles have undergone a change over time. It is important for every society to re-evaluate its preconceived ideas of gender and determine if that is still the norm for their society. When people think of gender roles we typically have set stereotypes in our head of what that means. Much of the time, what we believe, is not what is actually true. It is often argued what is right and what is wrong.

Even though it was only for a month, he felt “less of a man”. When I was in middle school, for six months my dad had to work every weekend overnight in addition to his 8am - 4:30pm work schedule. Because of his excessive working, we did not spend much time together as a family during this time. Another example is I work at Payless and at my store it is made up of only women. Some men will come in and ask for applications, but when they ask me the question of, “Do any men work here?” and I tell them no, they immediately decide to not apply. In this session, I will discuss the gender roles in my family. The definition of gender role is the degree to which a person adopts the gender-specific behaviors ascribed by his or her culture (Matsumoto, D. R., & Juang 2013, 156). For example, traditional gender roles recommend that males are aggressive, angry, and unemotional. It goes further and explains that the male should leave the home every day to make a living and be the main wage earner. My father explained to me that they chose traditional parenting role because both sides of the family utilized traditional parenting gender roles. I believe my parents felt pressure to obtain the gender roles of the mother staying home with the children while the father worked. The concept of gender roles are quite simple, yet can be very biased towards both genders. Men and Women are equal enough to where a woman and a man can do whatever their mind wants to accomplish.
