Is Marijuana a Good Choice? Recreational marijuana is now legal in four states (as of June 19, 2015), Colorado, Washington, Alaska, and Oregon. Medical marijuana is legal in twenty-three states (as of June 19, 2015). I believe no more states should legalize it. California was the first state to prohibit marijuana use about a century ago. People should be entirely careful about using marijuana because of the negative effects it produces. Marijuana should be illegal because it is harmful to young people’s brains, it can cause breathing problems, it increases your heart rate, and it can become addictive. Some people think marijuana is okay (especially for medical purposes), because it can reduce nausea during chemotherapy and it decreases pain and inflammation in autoimmune diseases. First, recreational marijuana is harmful to the brains of young people. Infants and children still unborn can be harmed if their mother uses marijuana. Some women declare they use marijuana for morning sickness or other uses while pregnant. Brain impairment to the infant is the main problem associated with marijuana while pregnant (USA Today “Marijuana Health Risks”). Young people aren’t only children and infants, but also teenagers. Teenagers who use marijuana can have a significant IQ decline as they age. For example, a study indicated that individuals who began smoking marijuana heavily while teenagers and had an ongoing marijuana use disorder lost an average of eight IQ points between ages 13
The truths about marijuana are slowly starting to resurface, the government keeps ignoring that cannabis could one day be as powerful for the U.S. Unfortunately, these truths about marijuana are under a lot of criticism because of the stereotype of what people see as a "marijuana or cannabis smoker." There is a great difficulty in this law because marijuana is still recognized as a harmful and dangerous substance in some states. This can cause problems because each state has their different views and opinions on the matter, and have their own rules and how the rules apply towards it. The twenty-six states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form, but California, Massachusetts, and Nevada just passed the law for recreational use. The states that have medical marijuana and recreational legalization are Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Alaska. The states that only have medical marijuana legal are Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii (Ingraham). However, legalizing marijuana could have some benefits instead of being a drug with some bad reputations. Marijuana should be legalized because of medical reasons, safety reasons, and have some benefits to society.
There has been a lot of debate on whether or not marijuana should be legal for medicinal purposes in all fifty states. Many people believe that marijuana is an unsuitable substitute for many of the medications we have today. On the other hand, many researchers have conducted extensive studies that have shown how beneficial medicinal marijuana can be. Many states have already picked up on this, and have laws set in place to allow the use of medicinal marijuana. Medicinal marijuana has a wide variety of uses, and should be allowed for medicinal purposes in all fifty states.
Marijuana use is on the rise, especially among teenagers and young adults. With the recent laws passed in eight states about legalizing medical marijuana , many stand divided when it comes to this never ending debate, but I firmly believe that this miracle working drug should be legalized throughout the United States.
Legalizing marijuana is crucial to the medical field because many patients cannot use this marvelous plant to relieve their pain. This plant can help patients with multiple sclerosis, nausea from cancer chemotherapy, HIV, nerve pain, and seizure disorders. Many patients must go behind the doctors back and consume cannabis or give it to a loved one to relieve their pain. Only twenty-nine states have allowed the use of medical marijuana. Furthermore, that means that twenty-two states do not allow the usage of any form of Cannabis. Marijuana should be an all-around legal
As of April 2017, 29 states in the United States have legalized medical marijuana. That now makes 58% of the 50 states that have recognized the medical benefits that marijuana can provide. Marijuana should be legalized in all states for health purposes because it can reduce seizure activity for those with epilepsy, provide better long term relief to people that have chronic pain (stemming from a variety of health issues) versus the use of opioids, and has been effective in not only treating the symptoms and side effects of cancer, but in killing cancer cells in preclinical trials as well.
Another thing that is considered health effects of smoking marijuana is being pregnant while smoking it. Use of marijuana during pregnancy may cause a high risk for brain and behavioral problems for the baby. If a pregnant woman uses marijuana, the drug may affect certain developing parts of the fetus’s brain. This may result in challenges for the child and may include problems with attention, memory, and problem-solving. Marijuana may cause women to also give birth to babies with lower birth weight, temporary poor autonomic control, particularly in terms of regulating their alertness, and a "hole in the heart"(ventricular septal defect. Additionally, some research suggests that moderate amounts of THC are excreted into the breast milk of nursing mothers. Some researchers say that although marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug among women of childbearing age, there isn't much known about the side effects of prenatal exposure to marijuana. Women who are pregnant and use marijuana may be passing the THC into the breast milk and into the baby, where it can be stored in the baby's fatty tissue for several weeks. Infants who are exposed to THC through breast milk may experience an increase in tremors, poor sucking, slow weight gain, and poor feeding in the first month of thor life. In conclusion, marijuana clearly affects the brain, heart, lungs, immune system, and
I understand that every drug has its good and bad side effects, but I believe marijuana should become legal in all states because the proof given explains how it’s safe. It’s safer than alcohol, has been around for centuries, and helps alleviate many medical symptoms. So maybe we should think more about marijuana being good for us instead of assuming it’s only
For at least the last decade medical marijuana has been on all of the national headlines. Proponents for its use have told us all the ways it has benefited everyone who has been prescribed medical marijuana. However opponents for its use have demonized it to the point where the average citizen doesn’t know what’s good about it and what’s bad about it. Medical Marijuana should be legal in all states.
A doctor at Cannabinoid Research Institute said “Cannabis is the single most versatile herbal remedy and the most useful plant on Earth. No other single plant contains as wide a range of medically active herbal constituents” (Dr. Ethan Russo). After the legalization of marijuana in Colorado, medical and then shortly after recreational, many states are asking themselves the same question. Medical marijuana should be legalized as it provides a long list of medical uses for patients and an additional source of revenue for states. Medical marijuana has more than enough facts to support the legalization of it.
Marijuana is a kind of plant that people smoke to get feeling that they like. As far as we know, marijuana is illegal in the United States and most of the countries in the world. Nevertheless, in the United States there are two states where people can use marijuana legally: Colorado and Washington. However, many people argue that marijuana should be illegal, and other people say marijuana cannot be legal. Marijuana is a dangerous kind of drug, so it should not be legal because it may affect many problem or diseases such as, lung cancer, lead to other drugs and it could make anyone criminal.
I am not the only one to come to this conclusion as 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=000881). These states have different regulations about the amount of marijuana that may be legally possessed and the conditions for which marijuana is a legal treatment. Some states do not allow smoking, they only allow marijuana in liquid, pill, or vaporized form. The legislators and public are becoming more open to marijuana as a medical treatment as more and more studies are being conducted and
Marijuana crosses the placenta and blood-brain barrier because of this marijuana has been shown to negatively affect brain development. Some of the documented negative long-term consequences of marijuana use in pregnancy are emotional, cognitive, and behavioral disorders. Marijuana may also lead to difficulty with attention, memory and problem solving (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014). Physical effects of infants exposed to marijuana use while in utero have been proven and include decreased birth weight, height, gestational period and higher incidence of preterm labor (Alharbi & el-Guebaly,
A number of movements to legalize marijuana have been gaining attention lately. Currently there are 14 states where marijuana is legal for medical use (medicalmarijuana). 41% of U.S. citizens believe marijuana should be legalized (drugpolicy) but others are still concerned about health damage. American society has lost the war against marijuana, and that's okay. We should stop wasting time and money trying to reverse history and instead legalize both medical and recreational use of this mild narcotic widely seen as no more harmful than alcohol.
Marijuana is believe it or not, one of the safest ‘illegal’ drugs on Earth. It is safer than legal alternatives: alcohol or tobacco. According to CNN “1 in 8 Americans smoke marijuana on a regular basis.” the drug can provide medical benefits, lower social costs, and better the economy. Therefore Marijuana should be deemed legal for recreational and medicinal usage across America, because it provides medical benefits, lowers social cost, and betters the economy across the board.
Marijuana, like any other harmful drug, will increase risk of both brain and behavioral problems in babies if mothers use it during pregnancy. There are also a lot of scientists doing research about the connection between marijuana and pregnancy, and some research suggests that “moderate amounts of THC are excreted into the breast milk of nursing mothers. With regular use, THC can reach amounts in breast milk that could affect the baby's developing brain.” (Marijuana and your health: What 20 years of research reveal) A mother who smokes marijuana during her pregnancy will be seem as selfish because she only care about her happiness which might be the feeling she gets when she smokes marijuana but not the baby’s health. When people smoke marijuana, and get high all the time, they will become less productive which will bring negative impact to the society which also mean that the taxpayers might get stuck with the medical bills of heavy users; and more people might drive while get high. (The elements of Philosophy). Additionally, marijuana can lead to development of problem use which is known as a substance use disorder, which takes the form of addiction in severe cases. People who use marijuana for a long term, like cigarette
