Hero is a character with better qualities and abilities that most boys would like to become even when they grow up. Some heroes have wonderful endings while some ones, which are called tragic heroes do not. Aristotle stated that “tragic hero will most effectively evoke both our pity and terror if he is neither thoroughly good nor thoroughly bad but a mixture of both(Abram, 322) The protagonist Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart, Which was written by the Chinua Achebe, was respectable at the beginning of the novel but suicided at the end of the story. We define Okonkwo as a tragic hero because he was a successful man, he had fatal weakness and he had a tragic ending.

This made him become extremely strict to him wives and children. He smashed his wife’s face in the week of peace just because she made lunch late. Although the tribe asked that Ikemefuna must be killed, to some degree, he killed Ikemefuna because he was afraid being thought weak. He was also too stubborn since he did something without thinking. When the Christians came in, he chose an extreme way to defend the culture, which is killing. However, he did not even know that some of the villagers had betrayed their culture. This tragic flaw prevents him from becoming a great hero.

The suicide at the end of story makes him a tragic hero. He killed himself because he found that the Igbo culture was dead since no one else would defeat the colonist and culture invasion. After being exiling for seven year, Okonkwo came back to his village and found that the Christian culture had permeated his homeland. He would like to change it because the colonists had abandoned the old rules and set new ones. He wanted to motivate his people to gather and go against the colonist by burning the church and killing the messenger. However, no one else supported him. He realized that no one except him would defend the Igbo culture, which means the Umuofia people would not start a war against the Christians and his culture was already dead and he cannot save it by himself.
