When you think of the word ‘outsider’ you think ‘outcast’, or, ‘someone who does not belong’. Well in this case, that would be accurate because Greasers are the Outsiders in town while the Socs run the place. Ponyboy was walking alone, and out in the open when he knew what could have happened. He ended up getting jumped by some Socs because of that bad decision. However, one could also say that he was just being forgetful, but I’m just going to count it as a bad decision. Darry worried about Ponyboy a lot because they were Outsiders, and Socs jump Outsiders. So, when Ponyboy came home at two o’clock in the morning Darry slapped him, which lead to Ponyboy running away with Johnny and so on. Ponyboy made lot’s of bad decisions in the book, for
After running for a while they stopped in another parking lot with a fountain in the middle. While in the parking lot a blue mustang that belonged to the Socs that beat up Johnny a long time ago pulled up. They stepped out and started to insult Johnny and Ponyboy, Ponyboy snapped back and they grabbed him and shoved his head in the found as stated, “They grabbed my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain. I fought, but the hand at the back of my neck was strong and I had to hold my breath. I’m dying, I thought, and wondered what was happening to Johnny.” This showed that those Socs were even going to kill them just because they talked back, but they were also drunk which also shows how dangerous drunk Socs are. To save Ponyboy Johnny had to kill the Soc and afterwards they both had to run out of town to avoid being arrested. This changed Ponyboys identity into a outlaw.
One notable example of this is when it says, “ The smoke filled my eyes and they started watering… We pushed open the door to the back room and found four or five little kids, about eight years old or younger….I picked up a kid and he promptly bit me, but I leaned out the window and dropped him as gently as I could.” This evidence shows that Ponyboy went into a burning building to save kids he doesn't even know, showing that to save others he will do almost anything.
The Greasers felt like outsiders around the Socs because the Socs were the upper class. Socs were always in advanced classes so when Ponyboy (a greaser) was in biology class filled with Socs , he felt like an outsider. When Ponyboy had to dissect a warm and the razor wouldn’t cut, he took out a switchblade. The girl beside him was a Socs and she sad “They are right, you are a hood” (Doc B). So, when Ponyboy was in an advanced class filled with Socs and when
In chapter 3, Darry and Ponyboy got into a fight, in which Darry hit Ponyboy. This fight resulted in Ponyboy and Johnny killing a Soc, runnning away, going missing for five days, and getting Ponyboy injured and Johnny dead. The boys returned home when they were rushed to the hospital after being wounded from a fire. Once Ponyboy came to in the hospital, he saw Darry, crying. "Darry didn't like me... he had driven me away that night... he had hit me...he didn't give a hang about me... Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying... Darry did care about me..." (98). Ponyboy ran to Darry, hugged him, and started sobbing. The two brothers stood in the waiting room, hugging and crying together. Daarry never scolded Ponyboy about him running away, because he was focused on Pony's health. He stayed at the hospital that night. Darry loves Pony, and now Pony knew.
One of the main vs man conflict in the Outsiders is the rival between the greasers and the socs. The greasers are the east side boys who " steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations". The greasers, due to their family background and physical appearance, are being stereotyped as individuals who are poor and are provided with fewer opportunities than others. On the other hand, the socs, are " the west-side rich kids" who come from affluent backgrounds and" likes to jump greasers and throw beer blasts for kicks". In the eyes of the public, the Socs are the social elites whereas the greasers are considered the less privileged, second-class citizens.
When Pony got home his older brother, Darry, yelled at him for being home so late, then slapped him, which wasn’t like him. Ponyboy ran out of the house not stopping for a second and ran right into a vacant lot, where Johnny was. “It was a good place to relax and cool off” Pony said tiredly. Pg. 53. They relaxed for a second, but before they could cool off that car came around the corner again, but there were more Socs in it. They got out, grabbed Ponyboy and started trying to drown him. After Ponyboy got up, he saw a Soc on the ground and Johnny was saying that he killed him. They went to see a friend, Dally Winston because they knew that he would have a plan. Dally told them to hop on a train, it was headed for a far away place called Windrixville and he gave them a gun and fifty dollars. They got on the train and headed away. As they got there, they saw an old abandoned church, that they would soon call home, at least for a little bit. After about a week or so Dally came up to check on them. They went to the local Dairy
Socs. Greasers. Two different groups who are just teenagers trying to find their way in life and who all have their problems. The book The Outsiders written by, S. E. Hinton, is based on a true story and how two different social groups interact. The wealthier, classier group with Mustangs and Madras shirts are called the “Socs.” The less wealthier, greasy, slicked-back hair group are called “Greasers.” Both groups are stereotyped by society. Greasers are prone to crime and Socs are spoiled and can’t do anything wrong. The Outsiders has multiple themes, one is that loyalty between people can keep each other from getting hurt. Another is how the reputations people hold aren’t always accurate. Both play roles in changing the lives of the characters in the book.
To explain, the greasers were defined as Outsiders because they were poor and treated like outcasts.
The outsiders, there are two groups of people that are called Greasers and Socs. Characters in the novel tend to believe that Greasers are troublemakers and Socs are the higher class teens. Socs are a disgrace because of their actions and attitudes.
What does Outsider really mean? Excluded, harsh family, different, stand out, mistreated, an Outsider stands alone. Why? Because people in this world just don’t understand what it’s like to be an Outsider. Don’t! I repeat don’t excluded your peers who see things a different way. The way they see finest. Encourage them along with their feelings, thoughts, also their differences. Treat them the same way you treat others. It explains that many people are crudely teased, furthermore, they’re taught to feel hurt by their peers. Instead of not helping peers you should comfort Outsiders to continue doing what they’re doing. Outsiders should not be mistreated the way they are because one of a kind. You can extremely hurt your peers by telling them they’re different. When the Greasers were called “Greases” by their peers( Someone will come by and scream “Greaser!” at them, which doesn’t make you feel too hot ⁽⁴⁾) it didn’t feel so pleasing. So, if you are being mistreated along with considering you may be an Outsider remember these teens. Life is rough, not just for you for everyone. Greasers were all Outsiders in this book. Greasers were the gang of which everyone knew. Getting into fights quite often, plus long hair, this gang stuck out like a sore thumb. Greasers were kicked around, picked on, as well as they were jumped by the Socs. But that’s not to say they never did anything back. Excluded from Soc groups, treated poorly, the Outsiders in this town were only included in groups
Imagine being dumb, stealing and carrying blades everywhere you go, and being unable to feel deeply, those words would make people think of Greasers. Most people when they think of gangs they think, that they fight, steal, and do not care about what is going on around them. Those statements that Greaser's and other assortments of gangs are dumb, criminals, and unfeeling may not be true, Ponyboy, the main character in S.E. Hinton’s book The Outsiders, opposes all of those statements.
Ponyboy has no parents and Darry is the eldest brother, therefore, Darry must be responsible for Ponyboy and make sure he is safe. Ponyboy doesn’t always understand the way Darry protect him. One night Jonny and Ponyboy went out and didn’t
On page 93, chapter 6, the author says, “Dally was standing there, and when he saw me he screamed. ‘For Pete's sake, get out of there that roof’s gonna cave in any minute. Forget those blasted kids!’ I didn’t pay attention, although pieces of the old roof were crashing down way to close for comfort. I snatched up another kid, hoping he didn't bite him, and dropped him without waiting to see if he landed okay or not.” This shows that Ponyboy is caring because even though he could’ve left, not saving any of those kids dying in the fire, and would´ve not be injured, he didn’t leave and he saved the poor children from dying in the
Ponyboy does not know where he wants to go with his life. At first he thinks he could never hurt anyone physically. He was once handed a broken bottle to defend himself but did not have too and later he states “I never could have used it anyway”. As the story progresses he losses his close friends. Later after losing them he breaks a bottle and threatens some Socs at a gas station. After they leave he picks up the broken glass so no one gets a flat tire. He does not know whether he should follow Johnny’s advice and stay golden or take Dally’s and toughen up so he wont get hurt anymore. However, he realizes that he needs to follow Johnny’s advice and learn for these mistakes and share with everyone what really happened and let it better him not tear him apart. Ponyboy’s feelings are not strange or rare. Tennagers all over have difficulty figuring out who they are in this world. Everyone has second thoughts on what to do next and how to do it. As kids grow up and realize how they want to live their lives they change. Something they may have done one month ago they would never do
On page 8 it says,” Not unless you’re hurt like Johnny had been that day we found him. Compared to Johnny I wasn’t hurt at all.” This backs up Ponyboy living in a bad neighborhood. With this kind of neighborhood, Darry can’t protect him of every danger that comes his way. On page 131, it says ,’ The rumble was set for seven,...” This shouldn’t be the kind of Neighborhood Ponyboy should be living in. If Darry really cared about Ponyboy, he wouldn’t let Ponyboy be part of the rumble. Ponyboy will end up getting injured if he lives in this
