Is School Really Free

One often overlooked point about “free” college tuition is that it is not ever free. The money does not just appear out of nowhere. What people normally mean by the statement of “free” college, it means free college for students. If the students are not paying than who would have to pay? The only other option would be the federal government. Right now, Americans owe more than $875 billion dollars in student loans. If the cost of tuition continues to grow at the rate it is, that number is only going to grow. If the federal government were to pay this, it would only further the country in debt.

Since free tuition would lead to overcrowding in schools, more schools would have to be built to compensate-a blessing in disguise. Here, in our lovely state of California, more prisons have been built within the last couple of decades than universities. Thus, the state would become pressured into finally making up for lost time and start chipping away at the deficit our state has accrued. In an article by US News & World Report regarding Obama’s free community college idea, it was stated , “If more middle class students choose community college, “it could create an environment where states step up on funding.” Moreover, the article continued to state the following: “With a more diverse group of students, community colleges could gain political capital and funding that goes with it.” Subsequently, education (that is financially feasible for this at or below the poverty line) is essentially a ticket out of poverty, a chance to move forward and embody the American dream. Ergo, (using California as part of this hypothetical scenario) by opening free community colleges, more students are encouraged to attend, therefore more schools need to be built, and lastly, once the schools are built more people will strive for a better life-one devoid of being uneducated and at a higher risk for criminality. Many students don’t get the chance to further their academic career after high school. Some aren’t able because child care is too expensive or they have to work to support themselves. Everyone should get money for school if they need it. Some parents can’t afford to help the students pay for college, while others can. Money should be given for need rather than want. But I believe there should be stipulations to getting the free schooling. College should be free to those who want to get a degree and need the funding.

In our lives today, not everyone can financially afford to attend a four year university or college, but yet people still attend because they have academic goals. Currently there is help with grants, merit scholarships and loans available for some. However many students do not realize they will eventually be left to pay the majority of the money back. Students who want an education should get it, a country such as the United States should provide students with financial aid.

Imagine a world where college was completely free. Tuition is completely paid for, no book fees, housing fees, everything is one-hundred percent paid for by the government. Unfortunately, the only downfall to that is that the people fund the government. Taxpayers, which should be almost all of America, are the ones who give the government the money to do every day necessities. The government will not be able to afford to pay for every student to have free college on their own, all of that money will have to come from us, the people. This means that college really isn't free. The government should not pay for everyone's college because it is unfair to those who can easily afford it, taxes will go through the roof, and will inhibit a lesser education if it is free for everyone.

The National Public Radio (NPR) author Anya Kamenetz published an article titled Is College Really Free? She begins the piece by addressing the new coming attraction of the words “free college.” The rage began when the presidential campaign took off and Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders focused around the topic of universal college in America. The author mentioned that New York Govenor Andrew Cuomo has been proactive and proposed an idea for the city of New York. He created a scholarship plan that would allow families earning under $125,000 a year to receive free tuition for a 2 or four year term at any New York state university. With tuition being free they can focus on what they have always wanted to achieve and be in their lives without the worry of having to pay thousands of dollars and working many long hard hours at a job. Having free college tuition will allow students to make real life choices earlier out in the world. Some students would have the funds to begin their life decisions earlier, although some cannot make those choices till later in life, but by having free college could those choices could become possible sooner. Not all students have life decisions they chose or opted into so having something like looking forward to free tuition could boost their confidence in life and get on the right track to become something or someone they have longed to become. This is a classic example of a catch 22. A person needs an education to have money, but a person cannot make money without an education. This is what contributes to the unequal distribution of wealth that is allowing poverty to be a problem in the lives of millions of Americans. If everyone was given the right to a college education, America could finally start to live up to its full potential and end poverty and hunger.

Not making college education free would lead to bankruptcy and an inability to give back to the economy. Many people who are in debt with student loans often have an inability to buy a house, a car, or afford life necessitates such as medical coverage. Making college education totally free would lead to an increase of financial burden for taxpayers because they are often responsible for paying the student loan forgiveness tax. The goal is to prepare people for the workforce and to improve our economy.
