The United States Policy in Responding to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
1. Policy Decision and Objectives: On September 19, 2017 remarks by President Trump to the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly- “We must deny terrorists safe haven, transit, funding, and any form of support for their vile and sinister ideology. The Senate armed service committee on June 13, 2017 made a deliberation on how to dismantle violent extremist organizations such as ISIS and other Al Qaida capabilities wherever they emerge by closely working with interagency and coalition partners. The actors involved in Iraq – Syria conflicts include: ISIS fought the Assad Regime and allied Shiite forces, Syrian opposition groups, the Iraqi military and militias, and the Kurdish Peshmerga, and the moderate Sunnis backed by U.S. ISIS strategic objective is to establish a caliphate in Iraq and the Levant, control and govern the caliphate, expand Islam and sharia law worldwide, and recreate the power and the glory of (Sunni) Islam. The ways employed by ISIS include, marginalized grievances of Islam and radical interpretations of Quran to recruit extremist Islamic insurgent fighters. Social media is used as their primary means by spreading hatred among society. ISIS utilizes twitter, YouTube, and Facebook which is accessed by many teenagers all over the world. However, due to unemployment rate globally, lack of security awareness, and lack of patriotism. Men, women, and children are easily persuaded to join ISIS and other extremist groups.
Such strategic objectives ends, ways, and means of ISIS requires critical intervention by U.S. and allies to deny ISIS from achieving their objective and reduce the danger it poses to U.S. and global security.
Islamic extremist operates in volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity environment, there is a need for the U.S strategic leaders and their allies to understand
The key drivers of uncertainty for ISIS in these scenarios include its ability to management its level fundamentalism and stability within its environment. Muslim conduct Islamic fundamentalism when they live and project on to others the original interpretation of Muhammed teachings. The most radical fundamentalism is Wahhabi or Salafist, supporting the conservative and extreme interpretation of the Quran and Sharia Law. ISIS uses its radical fundamentalist interpretation of Quran and Sharia Law to conduct its killing, caliphate and management its people. Due to its major combat losses, ISIS may want a less aggressive approach of fundamentalism to be more appealing to large portions of the Muslim community. The moderate fundamentalism approach used the both the uses the Quran and Sharia Law as well but used political governance or over more aggressive violence to achieve its strategic objectives. To regain personnel and strengthen its forces, ISIS may want to consider globalism over nationalism to improve stability. Although Globalism promotes international investment along with the spread of ideas and culture to other nations, ISIS may want to engage with Nationalism approach to strength it based in Iraq or Syria. All four scenarios review the importance of both fundamentalism and stability as major driving factors projecting the future of an uncertain
In the video “What ISIS Thinks of 'What ISIS Really Wants” by Nadine Ajaka, they talk about what ISIS’ goals are and the ideals of the group. The main points of ISIS’ ideals in the video are that they are being led by a prophecy and that they are being led into this.
President Obama’s strategic plan in Iraq and Syria is to continue Airstrikes to slow the forward progression of ISIS, while utilizing deployed U.S. service members to work with coalition partners to assist with partner building capacities. These partners include “Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga forces, and moderate Syrian fighters, and both Sunni and Shia militia groups.”3 To be successful in this endear as mentioned by Sec Carter, “the only way to have a lasting defeat of ISIL is to have someone who can govern and secure territory once ISIL is defeated, a local force on the ground. That 's why the strategy calls for the United States to help train and equip, and then help enable local ground forces.”4 Without basic security the Government of Iraq (GOI)
ISIS has been a rapidly increasing threat to not just the United States of America, but the entire world. ISIS has done countless brutal, sick, heart wrenching things that have caused a national and international uproar in the citizens of numerous countries. ISIS considers them the Islamic State, and they seem to have many motives. They basically want a large portion of the Middle east under ISIS control and for the rest of the world to accept their disgusting “traditions” as they claim they are doing, This threat has done some very unspeakable things; the problem needs to be solved. Considering the view the United State holds right now, there are a few actions that can be taken to reduce this threat that ISIS presents. ISIS has rapidly become an enormous problem for most of, if not all of the world. There are some very simple and some very complicated ways to solves this problem. The most efficient way is to simple go to war with ISIS and physically, mentally and emotionally destroy everything and everyone that is supporting this cause, another way is to give them what they desire to have, finally the last option is just completely ignore the foreign issue until it presents itself on U.S. soil. After an online video emerged on Tuesday, January 21st, 2015, showing ISIS threatening to kill two Japanese hostages, relatively little was known about the relationship between the two prisoners. But Reuters News revealed later that next day
In nearly 100 countries throughout the world al-Qaeda had followers in which would carry out attacks, without question, when told to do so. In addition, locals within these countries, alongside professional
One of the greatest hybrid threats to global stability today is the rise of the Islamic State. ISIS has been using hybrid techniques for a number of years. Current insurgent activity taking place in Iraq and Syria has been well documented. ISIS has shown time and again that they are a well-organized military-like group with its structured rank and coordinated offensive tactics. In addition to insurgent actions, ISIS has taken to terrorism in many countries around the world in order to promote its objectives. Recently it has been discovered that ISIS has also teamed with criminal organizations in both Europe, Asia, and North America. Additionally, ISIS has waged an information war against its enemies by spreading its propaganda through news outlets
The United States, with its coalition partners, has committed to degrade and destroy the terrorist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This group poses a threat to the people of the Middle East, as well as to the United States, our allies, and interests in the region. If this terrorist organization is left uninterrupted, ISIL will grow, threatening the surrounding areas of the Middle East, our allies abroad, and the United States.
Every day, as I turn on the news, I sigh in despair. The world is a total mess; innocent civilians being bombed, slavery, and poverty still evident in many countries. Why the world is so corrupt- in 2014, is beyond me. I try to avoid headlines about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) but the ever-growing presence of their existence has amplified so much that it cannot be ignored. ISIS is a militant terrorist group that has struck fear into the hearts of many Iraqi’s. Through the use of violence, mass rape, and propaganda, ISIS has conquered much of Iraq and Syria. The objectives of ISIS are to establish an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East. I can’t get it through my head why people would do this, especially if it would backfire on them in the long run. By making their acts of terror known to the world, they only provoke international awareness. They absolutely will not last without end in the hands of the U.S army, whom they have mocked and threatened in the past.
The U.S. strategy for defeating ISIS must look like defeating terrorists without compromising foreign interest in these countries, like Syria, and Iraq. There is also a risk for finding trustworthy allies, and having weapons falling into the wrong hands. Therefore U.S. should provide aids to allies and help them figure out their true ideology. A war would destroy the economy of the Syria and negatively affect the citizens as well as the environment of the region. For the betterment of the world and its people, countries should come together and end the war by negotiating rather than shooting at each other, if possible.
Think about it, you’re walking down the street or just sitting at your favorite place to eat. Then the next thing you know half the street is blown up and you’re either dead, injured, or the person next to is. This is what the people of Paris felt like the day ISIS sent suicide bombers to blow up the city. ISIS first started as a group that broke off from al-Qaeda. In 2014, ISIS controlled more than 34,000 square miles in Syria and Iraq, from the Mediterranean coast to south of Baghdad. ISIS believes they are part of a prophecy written 14 hundred years ago and that they are a key part of an apocalypse that is to come. Their goal is to create an Islamic state called the Caliphate across Iraq, Syria and other places across the Middle East. ISIS has became a global threat and we Americans need to do our part. Now let's talk about what they
(U) In conclusion, Al-Nusra is a threat to the U.S.’s war on terror due to their rapid growth and relations with ISIL. They began war against Syria on 24 January 2012 and grew rapidly, recruiting from around the world. Al-Nusra has shown they are capable of large-scale terror attacks. They also show signs to move their operations beyond Syrian borders and possibly begin attacks on the U.S. and its allies. The U.S. needs to contain Al-Nusra and the threats they present before they become a major threat that the U.S. cannot
In order to formulate a policy against ISIS, there must to be an understanding regarding how ISIS came to be and what its motives are. ISIS is a terrorist organization that began as al-Qaeda in Iraq. In time, ISIS split from al-Qaeda for ideological differences, mainly because ISIS wanted to control large areas of land in order to establish a caliphate. In the past year ISIS became increasingly violent, and started being stricter with the regions they hold under their control, such as beheading people, and burning them alive. Now ISIS controls an area roughly the size of the United Kingdom in Iraq and Syria. ISIS’ main objective is to establish a caliphate where they can follow Islam to its strictest interpretation.
The United States first tool to achieve these goals is diplomatic. First, the United States needs to retract the policy that the United States does not negotiate with Terrorists. Negotiation creates a negative connotation of concession or handing power over to the enemy. Negotiation, however, can be mere discussion with the enemy to find a way to end violence. Diplomatic tools consist of treaties, conventions, alliances, and accords. Holding conventions and creating accords will be the most successful approaches. Treaties require Senate and Presidential approval which can be a lengthy process and is tied up in domestic politics. The United States already has certain alliances and it is necessary to cultivate them, but in the context of ISIS and Syria, alliances are already set with the Free Syrian Army. Conventions to bring together many nations in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, to formulate agreements and accords with the states that are involved in Syria and fighting ISIS. ISIS, should not be a signatory since they are not a recognized state, but should be able to attend to make decisions with an understanding of ISIS’ wants because by understanding their objectives and interests we are better able to make policy to decrease violence of ISIS.
In this essay I will prove why America must intervene and eliminate ISIS because ISIS is inhumane. ISIS consistently and systematically defies international law. ISIS controls governmental operations and oil land in iraq. Imagine a group of men walking into a concert and firing upon everyone in their sight for no apparent reason. ISIS has spread like a wildfire all over the world, doing whatever it takes for them to prove that they can't be stopped. In this essay it will be explained why ISIS needs to be eliminated and taken control of. Three key points will be talked about and discussed.
They consist of the different ethnic groups of Kurds, Turks, Assyrians and Arabs. These ethnic groups are divided into the religious groups of Shiite Muslims, Sunni Muslims, and Christians. Relations between these groups have never been ideal. The three separate geographical are made from the occupation of Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites. Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites have had violent relations for decades. Power abuse in the government has occurred with leaders from different sects. One of the main examples of this became evident with the dictator Saddam Hussein. He was a Sunni Muslim who used the chemical weapon wielding Iraqi army to commit humanitarian crimes against the other religious groups in the country. President Bush described Saddam Hussein as “‘a brutal dictator’” that “‘should not be permitted to dominate a vital region and threaten the United States ‘” (qtd. in Perry 2). Iraq is a rich oil region that is essential to U.S. industry. President Bush made it very clear that U.S involvement is necessary in order to “protect U.S. national security and promote world peace” (Perry 2). In March of 2003, according to Jamsheed Choksy, the chairmen of the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University, a U.S. led coalition ousted the Sunni dictator in “Operation Iraqi Freedom” (Department of Defense). Corrupt government leaders are not the only complication within the country, it is unfortunately also
