Throughout world history there has been a pattern of one unfortunate group of people being pit against the rest, this people being persecuted and discriminated for their religious beliefs, political ideology, and even the color of their skin. In the United States it was the Native Americans, then the Chinese and the Irish, to now present day hostility to Latinos. The same can be said in every region of the world. The perpetuation of the “Us versus Them” binary is an occurrence that in some form or another inevitably comes to become apart of the social, political, and economic fabric of every country, region, and continent in history. Europeans are no exception, and currently, their biggest “nuisance” are Muslim immigrants moving to their countries. …show more content…
After the World Wars, borders changed across Europe, in many cases by hundreds of miles. The eastern border of Poland moved 200 miles west, and many people were now living in countries they previously had never been a part of. Europeans had to deal with living under these new conditions, politically, economically, and culturally. After the influx of Muslim immigrants to these Europeans lands, Caldwell states that Islam is different from other forms of immigration because it interrupts European culture as a whole. Islam is not a part of European culture and will not be able to assimilate to European cultural standards. This is historically problematic because Islam has been laced throughout European culture and history for …show more content…
There is a huge sense of Islamic cultural influence, but Europeans have become accustomed to it and have accepted it as a part of their society. To say that Islam has no place in Europe would be denying Islam’s intense cultural influence across the region. For Caldwell, Europe has adopted an “ideology of tolerance” that has allowed multi-cultural exchanges and encouraged European encouragement of cultivating immigrant culture. Caldwell is correct here, however it is not only Europe that has adopted a system of tolerance for religious and cultural differences. This may be construed as a weakness for Caldwell, but really it is not. Cultural exchange creates an environment that cultivates creativity and the sharing of knowledge. Practicing tolerance encourages people from different backgrounds to be able to work together and coexist. Caldwell states that Islamic practice goes against European values, but if one has ever really studied Islamic doctrine or even the Qu’ran, then one can tell that this is most certainly not
Everyone of us has our own unique culture and religion identification in the world. Also, known by the culture beliefs, behavior patterns, and which group or religion, we represent, but we have to represent each other because of their religion after all we are all human beings first. Also, their are many different variations of cultures living together in the same neighborhood, these days, and representing each other for cultures identity and what we believe in. We need to avoid any misunderstanding there is in the world about any cultures or religion.
Muslims in America faced several difficulties as they tried to gain racial equality and religious freedom. When they entered America and began to form an Islam religion there was a vastly larger number of white Christians than there were Muslims, and as a result, one of the difficulties they faced was that they were outnumbered by other religions. Because of the Islam religion being outnumbered by other religions, there was much less knowledge on their religion than there was on Christianity, leading to them being a minority compared to white Christians. As a result of this, there were not as many organizations that helped to increase the number of Islam presence in America. One of the organizations that was developed to help the Islam religion in America was the creation of the Moorish Science Temple, which Noble Drew Ali founded because "African Americans were descended from the
Working with the Muslim American population a social worker should apply the skill of cultural competence. A social worker demonstrating the skill of cultural competence is important when working with Muslim Americans because it allows the social worker to grow in his or her awareness. Growing in the awareness of the Muslim American population is of key importance as it allows the social worker to exceedingly help the client and getting to know the client in depth. With that being said, Muslim Americans have cultural values that may affect the treatment options and the way the social worker communicates with the client; illustrating the importance of the social worker growing in his or her awareness in the clients culture.
Americans view September 11th as the impetus for a paradigm shift in the racial dynamic between Muslim Americans and traditional Christian Americana. Following the rise of ISIL, Ben Affleck refuted a “codified doctrine of Islam,” that mandates fundamentalist aggression. This goes hand-in-hand with what has been coined as “civilizational arrogance,” the assumption of total understanding of a religion. Noted Islamophobes, such as Bill Maher, insist that the supposed doctrine of Islam impedes his right to free speech. This plays into the idea of what has become known as “liberal victimhood,” the casting of oneself as oppressed.
Within the past twelve years, Islam has grown to be the second largest religion practiced around the world. Growing up, there weren’t many Muslim people that practiced Islam as there are now. Ten years ago, I would only see about one or two Muslims as I walked down the street, but now I see many more. In Philadelphia, there are more than 200,000 people who are Muslim, and 85% of those people are African-American. In this city when people see African-American Muslims who are garbed up they don’t discriminate against them. To be a Muslim in this society it causes controversy because people are constantly pointing out all of the flaws within them.
On September 11th, 2001, a terrible event in history took place. With thousands dead and many more injured, the shocked and horrified US citizens looked for someone or something to blame. All Muslims ended up taking the blame for the actions of a small, radical, Islamic group called ISIS. The whole Islamic community shouldn’t receive hate and discrimination, just because the terrorists acted under the same religious beliefs.
On December 1, I attended a program called “Stories of Black Muslims in America” sponsored by Damietta Cross Cultural Center. As a white Muslim, I haven’t experienced any racism toward my skin color so it was interesting to see how black Muslims in America have embraced both sides of their identity. “Black” and “Muslim” are terms often not associated with one another. In fact, most Americans have a hard time understanding the concept.
Caldwell argues that “Western Europe became a multi-ethnic society in a fit of absence of mind.” European policymakers imported people from Africa and the middle east to fill short term labor shortages in post-war Europe, Germany especially. For the first time in modern history, immigrants have a substantial presence in Europe. Islam is the continent’s second largest religion. These immigrants continued to multiply even as the jobs disappeared: the number of foreign residents in Germany increased from 3m in 1971 to 7.5m in 2000 And by 2050, the foreign-origin populations in most European countries will be between 20 and 32%. even though the number of foreigners in the workforce did not budge. Today immigrants account for about 10% of the population of most west European countries, and up to 30% in some of Europe 's great cities. These same policymakers made the assumption that immigrants would quickly adopt the moral and cultural norms of their host societies. The heavy industries
"Justice and equality by any means necessary" was said in one of the most controversial speeches in history by a Nation of Islam superior named Malcolm X. The pursuit of peace and justice has been sought after in almost every major religion and culture. The meaning of peace and liberation within the Nation of Islam is no different than any other oppressed or mistreated group of people. However the way the Nation of Islam was said to market its strategy for peace and justice of mostly African Americans was by preaching violent and even oppressive behavior to its followers. Leaders such as Louis Farrakhan and Malcolm X were the front runners of the controversial undertone of the Nation of Islam during the civil rights movement which was considered
There is not much information on when Muslims first arrived in America, but there has been evidence that some of the slaves were Muslim, but didn’t have the ability to practice their religion freely, they also tried to accommodate their faith with Christianity, but others were converted. It was about twenty percent of the slaves in the US were Muslim. One of the first known Muslims in the United States, was a slave from Morocco, named Estevanico, who was shipwrecked with Spanish Explorers near the where the city Galveston, Texas is. After that there weren’t many Muslims coming into the United States until the twentieth century. This is shown by the evidence that one of the first mosques was built in North Dakota in 1929, and while the mosque was demolished a Muslim cemetery still stands near the spot of that mosque. Islam started in the 7th century with a prophet named Muhammad. It is an Abrahamic religion, like Judaism and Christianity, but Muslims believe that Islam is a step further than the other two religions.
This film tells a very interesting life of a man who changed the world over 1,000 years ago. Although he changed the world many years ago he lives through the people of the world, many of which are Americans. I learned many interesting facts about Muhammad, but what I found the most interesting was that when he was born his father died and at the age of six his mother passed. He was soon adopted by his powerful uncle, but Muhammad believed that he was nothing but an orphan. It was said that he could not read or write, although he could not Muhammad made a good life for his self he married and also established a profitable business for his self. He married a woman who was a little older than he was around the age of twenty and many people believed that he was after her money.
Immigration and how to deal with migrants is a very important issue when it comes to nations and national governments. The migrants themselves, will bring their own culture, beliefs, and religion to their new home. Sometimes however, the flow of immigration and the migrants will bring along their own radicalized beliefs about religion and government. It is not just migrants that will be radicalized sometimes however, but their sons or daughters will sometimes be looked down upon because they are not in their own native land. The feeling of being marginalized by the greater society is what can lead to a hate for a host country like France where many migrants end up. These radicalized individuals can be terrorists and do terrorist attacks on
the government and media. I believe that people running this country are Anti Islamic due to there view on things. Also this is a Zionist country, which is another reason that makes the media discriminate against the Muslim’s, due to the conflict with Palestine and other Muslim countries. The media has always portrayed Islam in a negative way. The reason the media is biased when it comes to Islam because they hate the Islamic structure and the beliefs. The majority of media conglomerate ownership is of people who
The first part of Silverstein's answer on why Islam matters to westerners is to first know the story of Islam, its peoples and cultures, and the different institutions in it. He breaks the history of Islam into 4 main time eras in the book’s first chapter; 600-800 CE, 800-1100 CE, 1100-1500 CE, and 1500 to present. The first time frame shows how The existence of Islam "is all due to the events in the 600-800 period" (page 19). It is when the Prophet Muhammad, with his monotheistic message, established a new community (umma) made up of fellow of the "new" religion,(page 10) . It is also the period where different sects in Islam emerged that was due to the death of Muhammad, their political and religious leader. After the prophet's death the
Over a thousand years ago, Europe experienced one of its greatest periods of cultural enlightenment.Islam in Spain has had a fundamental presence in the culture and history of the nation. The religion was present inmodern Spanish soil from 711 until 1492 under the rule of the Arabs and Moors of al-Andalus.Islamic Spain was a multi-cultural mix of the people of three great monotheistic religions: Muslims,Christians, and Jews. For more than three centuries in Medieval Spain, Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together and prospered in a thriving multicultural civilization. Here, remarkable individuals of different faiths made lasting contributions in such areas as poetry, art, architecture, music, dining etiquette, science, agriculture,
