Throughout world history there has been a pattern of one unfortunate group of people being pit against the rest, this people being persecuted and discriminated for their religious beliefs, political ideology, and even the color of their skin. In the United States it was the Native Americans, then the Chinese and the Irish, to now present day hostility to Latinos. The same can be said in every region of the world. The perpetuation of the “Us versus Them” binary is an occurrence that in some form or another inevitably comes to become apart of the social, political, and economic fabric of every country, region, and continent in history. Europeans are no exception, and currently, their biggest “nuisance” are Muslim immigrants moving to their countries. …show more content…

After the World Wars, borders changed across Europe, in many cases by hundreds of miles. The eastern border of Poland moved 200 miles west, and many people were now living in countries they previously had never been a part of. Europeans had to deal with living under these new conditions, politically, economically, and culturally. After the influx of Muslim immigrants to these Europeans lands, Caldwell states that Islam is different from other forms of immigration because it interrupts European culture as a whole. There is a huge sense of Islamic cultural influence, but Europeans have become accustomed to it and have accepted it as a part of their society. To say that Islam has no place in Europe would be denying Islam’s intense cultural influence across the region. For Caldwell, Europe has adopted an “ideology of tolerance” that has allowed multi-cultural exchanges and encouraged European encouragement of cultivating immigrant culture. Caldwell is correct here, however it is not only Europe that has adopted a system of tolerance for religious and cultural differences. This may be construed as a weakness for Caldwell, but really it is not. Cultural exchange creates an environment that cultivates creativity and the sharing of knowledge. Practicing tolerance encourages people from different backgrounds to be able to work together and coexist. Caldwell states that Islamic practice goes against European values, but if one has ever really studied Islamic doctrine or even the Qu’ran, then one can tell that this is most certainly not
