Islam, the world's fastest-growing religion and America's third-largest faith, continues to prosper at unprecedented rates. However, despite its growth and prominence in today's society, Muslims in America continue to be denied a basic right to practice their religion. Throughout the year, there are two major Islamic holidays that take place: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Christianity and Judaism, the religious frontrunners in the U.S., already have several national observances set in place. It is time that Islam, a religion that will soon surpass Judaism and nearly equal the Christian faith, also gains the right to observe a national holiday(s).
The key features of the religion of Islam were hard to define in such a short paper. I find myself fascinated with the Muslim belief system and their celebratory festivals. The more I have read Muslims, the more I have come to understand that our religions have a lot in common. As a Christian, I believe there is only one God as stated in Deuteronomy 6:4-5(NIV Bible). Muslims also believe there is only one God (Qur’an 3:18). We have our celebrations of faith via communion, prayer, Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas (the birth of Christ). Muslims have Ramadan, Eid-al-Fir, Dhu Al-Hijja, Eid-al-adha, The first day of Muharram, The twelfth day of Rabi I, and Mirajun Nabi. Our Christian rituals and beliefs are only different to Muslims, by the mere name or style in which we carry out our worship services.
One major holiday in Iran is Nawruz. Nawruz is the ancient Persian New Year. The Persian New Year is celebrated on March 21st. This is also the first day of spring. Commonly a gong is rung, or even a cannon is fired, to symbolize the beginning of a new year. There are festivals around the country where people go to celebrate and watch dancers at the festivals (Gall 309). The first 12 days of the New Year symbolize order in the world and peoples lives. The 13th day marks the beginning of the return to original life. Families often go to the park and picnic because the goal of that day is to clear out evil with joy and laughter (Britanica 1). On the 13th day there is also a ritual. At the end of the day everyone throws away the Sabzeh. The Sabzeh is supposed to collect all the sickness, bad luck, and pain in the path of the family. It is considered bad luck for anyone, other that the family that owns it, to touch it. It is looked at as taking others hardships into your own life (Britanica 1). Workers and students get a 2-hour lunch break. This gives them more time to spend with their family. On Fridays everyone takes the day off. Fridays are the Muslim day of rest and prayer. Families commonly go on outings like to the park, to meet up with friends, or have a cookout (Gall
“In world history, the most important new factor in the eastern hemisphere was Islam,a religion that is linked to Judaic-Samaritan tradition of the Middle East.” Islam spread across North Africa to West Africa beginning from the eighth century onwards, by means of military conquest, enabling Muslims to wield tremendous political influence and power. The introduction of Islamic religion impacted social, political and cultural aspects of Africa by means of trade, politics, and conversion.

Around 570 C.E., Muhammad, the leader of the Islamic religion, was born in Mecca. Shortly after he was born, his mom sent him to live with a nomad family in the desert. When Muhammad was around six years old, he returned to Mecca, around that time, his mother and grandfather died and he was left as an orphan. His uncle, who was a trader, took him in. Rise of Islam – In the 600’s Arabian armies conquered Iran. The Arabian armies that conquered Iran transformed most Iranians to Islam over time. Persian language was replaced by the language Arabic. The new changes in Iran transformed people’s lives in a lot of different ways; changing language, new religion, transformed beliefs and more. Later on in the 800’s Iran became a big part of new subjects such as: art, literature, and science. The change gave people an innovative start to convert themselves into something they seemed too long for. For Muslim Filipinos, Eidul Fitr marks the end of fasting during Ramadan. On this day, it is forbidden to fast as it is a day of celebration. Muslim Filipinos practice ritual washing before heading to a community gathering, usually in a mosque, and offer special prayers to Allah. On this day, they give the obligatory charity in the form of food known as “zakat al-fitr” and listen to special sermons on the occasion. After attending this gathering, many families choose to celebrate with a feast with their extended family and friends.
People celebrate it by getting together with their relatives as well as nearest and dearest ones. They celebrate it by sharing gifts, sweets, greetings and best wishes for Diwali. They enjoy a lot of activities, playing games, firing crackers, puja and many more. People purchase new clothes for all the family members according to their own capability. Kids enjoy this festival by wearing glittering and blazing clothes.
Although Islam is the second largest religion in the world with a following of 1.8 billion followers, no other religion has faced more scrutiny and hardship in the past decades. This has been caused by media and governments labeling Islam as a whole with their extremist groups like Al Queda and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. I even thought that the principals held by these extremist group were more common in Islam than they are. After studying Islam and gaining more information I came to respect this religion more than any other we studied this semester because of its seriousness and unity. The Quran and Hadith provide concrete details and instructions to follow in the faith of Islam. No texts from any other religion are as upfront with their beliefs than these. Muhammad was and continues to be a powerful and understanding leader that has led it to becoming the world’s fastest growing religion. I enjoyed studying the powerfulness of Muhammad and the direct voice of God in the Quran that is sets Islam apart from Judaism and Christianity.
