In recent years, the religion Islam has been the topic of many discussions. Most of these discussions center around the recent acts of terrorism. Those who have never had the opportunity to learn about Islam may not understand the basic principles and teachings of the religion. This lack of understanding leads to discrimination, a distorted view of what Islam stands for and, at its extreme, a hatred for anyone who practices Islam. When a person takes the time to learn about Islam, they will find that it is not that much different from Judaism or Christianity. Muslims recite from the Qur’an, just as Christians read from the Bible. Muslims also have five pillars that they must accomplish and they have certain taboos that they must stay away from. When one looks at these three things, they will see that Islam is actually a religion that is rooted in mercy and peace.
The Qur’an is considered the holy scripture of Islam. The word Qur’an is translated as ‘recitation’ or ‘reading’. Muslims hold fast to their belief that the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad after it had been written in heaven. They also believe that the Qur’an is the direct word of God and that no human has been the author of it. This is in contrast to the Christian Bible, which has been authored by humans. Muslims regard the Qur’an as being God’s last words to mankind.
