In the year of 2018, there are many trending issues catching the attention of American citizens. These issues are not only in the United States, but around the world. In effort to display the American culture best, the three ¨items¨ I would put into my time capsule would be heroin, stem cells, and college tuition/loans. Heroin is one of the largest issues the United States is facing with drugs. Because of the new found ways of taking this dangerous drug, such as snorting and smoking, people think it is not as dangerous as it was once known to be (National Institute on Drug Abuse), although heroin and morphine are listed in the top four most dangerous drugs in heath in 2002 (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Some of the dangers included with this drug are overdose, accidental abortion, collapsed veins, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis (National Institute on Drug Abuse), most of these dangers coming from the …show more content…
Another danger with heroin is that once a person begins using, they need a higher dose in order to obtain the same high, and build up a tolerance along with a dependence and addiction (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Once addicted, it can become very hard to quit. When an addicted individual does decide to quit, they often suffer from withdrawal, which is fatal (National Institute on Drug Abuse). A study with young heroin users concluded to the most common reason people started using heroin is because of their own curiosity, but also because heroin is displayed all throughout the media (Duterte, et. al.). One user interviewed in the study stated ¨If I´m gonna be a millionaire rockstar, I gotta f***in´ do [heroin]¨ (Duterte, et. al.) This comment demonstrates the mentality that a lot of heroin users have, and how artists and other celebrities affect the lives of others. With the widespread use of social media and other spreading types of media and
This paper is intended to educate those who almost nothing about heroin and those who use it. Many people have been associated with friends or families who have used some kind of drug. There are many people who have not had any contact with heroin users or if they have, don’t understand much about it. Using various sources about heroin to explain where it came from, how it is used, who uses it and how a person starts on the path towards heroin, preventing addiction, and global issues surrounding this drug. Although the topic of heroin is inexhaustible, it is my hope to spark reader’s curiosity. Knowledge of this drug might just help the reader join in on discussions about heroin.
This literature review will focus mainly on the drug use of heroin, the scary numbers behind the drug and the sudden rise of overdosing on the drug across the United States. Issues that will be discussed are what is Heroin, what’s in Heroin that makes it addicting, how it can increase the users risk of contracting other life threatening diseases and where it’s use and abuse are most popular across the United states and we will take a look at multiple studies that show examples of our new drug problem in the United States. While we looked at how homicide rates have dropped while in class, the flip side to that is that the amount of drug usage has risen.
In the US, according to CQ Researcher, the number of those that used heroin had more than doubled between the years of 2002 and 2004 and doubled again between 2011 and 2013. It is a growing issue especially due to
Misinformation is usually spread because someone presents their opinion as fact. Not many people even know how easy it is to overdose on heroin. For instance, a single shot of heroin can and, in many cases, does cause an overdose. First-time users are very different than experienced users; in fact, heroin users that have built a tolerance can use a much higher dose than a first-time user. As a result, the overpowering effect of the drug causes normal body functions like breathing to stop and the user could even die (Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs). Another common misconception spread to the younger generation is that if they do not intravenously use heroin then there is no risk of an overdose (Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs). While oral or nasal consumption comes with less of a negative stigmatism, the reality is that heroin is just as addictive, no matter what form of consumption one uses. On the other hand, one would think that the stigmatisms associated with heroin would actually prevent people from using and overdosing on the drug. The stigmatisms being that user’s are unhealthy, unhygienic, poor, and mentally unstable do deter some from not using. However, the fact that heroin overdoses are so prevalent proves that the desire to use is more powerful than any stigmatism or factual notion about heroin. As harmful as opinion-based information is, it will undoubtedly
One of the huge dilemmas in our country is heroin. Heroin is very dangerous due to the fact that the drug is very
In general, Heroin is bad and less commonly useful in medical treatments otherwise increase the cases of heroin epidemic and healthcare institutions like to use other methods of administration until there is high requirement because after serving, it converts to morphine by the mean of first-pass metabolism and resulting in deacetylation when ingested in the body of the person. For instance, drug like OxyContin has impacted and had become heroin epidemic ravaging and could be seen in America. Its impact also depend on the type of ingestion and in past, it has many bad results where youngsters used for the intense pleasure since it floods the brain and its immediate unpleasant side effects and an example as Eve has threaten her own life. In this condition, it was difficult for her
The National Institute on Drug Abuse educates society by saying, “People who inject drugs such as heroin are at high risk of contracting the HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) virus.” Users can receive these diseases if they use the same needles with other people. Reused needles could have blood or other fluids still on them from the previous user, which can carry out onto the next person and cause them to get infected with a disease. Another cause of heroin addiction is the tolerance of one’s body. It does not take much for an individual’s body to adjust to heroin. NIDA states that, “Heroin also produces profound degrees of tolerance and physical dependence.” Eventually when the user intakes heroin, their body slowly adapts and learns to tolerate the substance. Soon enough, the normal dose does not satisfy the user, so to receive the rush and euphoric effect, individuals would have start increasing the doses they take. Increasing the doses that they take can begin to lead them to using too much and the individual may unintentionally overdose.
In the United States today, heroin overdosage is the highest rate it has been since 2002 (“Overdose Death Rates”). Heroin is a drug that can be sold off of any person will to take the risk of selling the drug. Former addicts will tell you that heroin is cheaper on the street that any other drug. You can involve yourself with heroin in many different ways. This attracts people to obtain the drug for those reasons. Heroin addiction can happen to the most successful people as demonstrated in the story of Kurt Cobain’s abuse of heroin.
Heroin is bad. That should not come as a surprise. What might come as a surprise, on the other hand, is that America is currently going through a heroin epidemic. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Heroin use more than doubled among young adults aged 18-25 in the past decade.” However, heroin addictions do not arise ex nihilo. The silent perpetrators are pharmaceutical companies and their weapons are prescription painkillers.
“Younger people may even be under the impression that smoking or snorting heroin is a safe method. But, unfortunately, any method of heroin use can result in addiction, overdoses, and in the worst scenario, death.”
One major issue the United States has been struggling with and will continue to struggle with for a long time is the use of illegal drugs, specifically heroin. The problem with this isn?t just that it?s illegal in all 50 states, but it is cheap, dangerous, and highly addictive. The price of heroin is about the same as a fast food meal, making it simple for almost anyone to get ahold of this drug. ?There are only 3 main outcomes that heroin addiction can produce in the end: incarceration, mental hospitals, or death? (Side Effects of Heroin). This just shows that using heroin can put both the user and the people around them in danger. Many long-term users often become dependent on heroin, but with the right help people would
Heroin, which is a very popular drug of choice in the American drug culture today, is not a new drug that just showed up in the late 1960’s, nor are its negative effects unique to modern times. Heroin is an opium derivative and, as with any of the opium derivatives, there is a severe physical/mental dependency that develops when Heroin is abused.
“She was in a coma. She suffered brain damage and was paralyzed from the neck down; her one-time heroin use left her needing around-the-clock care.” (Bubala 2011, pgs. 1-2). This is an example of what Heroin can do to a young adult who tried the drug for the first time. Although Heroin may be a satisfying new experimental drug to young adults, Heroin is an addictive drug that destroys the human body, and can kill chronic users. The topics to be discussed in this essay are: What is Heroin, the bad effects Heroin has on the body, and what Heroin can lead to.
The United States of America being the third largest country in the world with more than 315 million inhabitants, consists of multicultural societies with ethnically diverse population. Since there are a lot of foreigners, the US culture has evolved in such a way accepting and tolerating other foreign cultures. US is very much influenced by protestant work ethics according to which people believe in themselves and their efforts to attain the goal of self-actualization and success. The rich diversity in the culture brought by foreigners, prevailing values of protestant ethics, hard work etc. have helped US to emerge as a superpower in the past years. Nearly every religion had its impact on US culture in one way or the other. The
Heroin production began in Asia and made its way to the United States via smuggling, heroin is classified as an opiate; which is a class of drugs known to depress the respiratory system (Louria, Hensle & Rose, 1967). Heroin is a drug which can be injected intravenously, intranasally or through a intramuscular path (Sahni, Garg, Garg, Agarwal & Singh, 2008), users tend to experience a rush as there is a rapid uptake of heroin into the central nervous system (Sporer, 1999). The effects of heroin on the individual user can range from overdose, hepatitis B, C and contracting HIV as a result of shared needles (Louria et al., 1967; Mark, Woody, Juday & Kleber, 2001, Sahni et al., 2008). Heroin overdose can also lead to death which can be preventable if medical treatment is provided within the space of 1 to 3
