It’s Kind of a Funny Story – Blog 0.5 It is currently 2:23 p.m. four hours before the birthday party was supposed to begin. I march back and forth between isles of the Indigo teen section, briefly scanning each of the shelves before moving on to the next. I’m looking for the perfect book to gift to my friend and it’s exhausting. After looking through multiple dystopian fantasies and lite reads about star crossed lovers with chronic diseases, a pastel yellow book caught my eye. It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. The name was familiar, it was a movie with Zach Galifianakis and an actress that used to be relevant in 2005. I never saw it, however I was sure I saw a gif on Tumblr about it. I ended up buying the book and making a mental …show more content…
He stops eating and sleeping until one night he falls into a suicidal episode. I have decent expectations for this book, yet I cannot help but feel like this might be another romanticized novel about depression and that Craig will just be another idealized character. Nonetheless, I am excited to finally have the chance to read the novel and share the experience with you.
It’s Kind of a Funny Story – Blog 1 Everyday Craig Gilner studied laboriously to get into the high school of his dreams. When he finally does get into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School the pressure becomes unbearable. He feels inadequate to his overachieving peers, academically and socially. The stress then evolves into an eating disorder, poor sleep habits, drug use, depression and suicidal thoughts. Craig then begins to see a psychiatrist who prescribes him Zoloft. For a brief period, his thoughts shift back to the way they were before. Thinking that he no longer needed to be on Zoloft, he threw them away. His suicidal thoughts build up until he loses it. He calls 1-800-SUICIDE who refer him to a psychiatric hospital. My favourite part so far, about the novel is Craig. He’s raw and authentic, Vizzini does not romanticize Craig’s depression as something that makes you seem cool. Nor does he write Craig to be an adult’s idea of a teenager. Craig and his friends are what makes the novel relatable. There are so many times that me and many other
People often think that comedians have a straight forward job: they practically just have to joke about a topic and make people laugh. But not many realize the brutality comedians have to face when they are “forced” to change their acts according to the setting and diverse range of their audience. In the article “That’s Not Funny”, the author Caitlin Flanagan, explains on how comedians face an uphill talk when they perform in colleges and how they have to change their scripts to make sure they don’t offend students on the basis of gender, religion etc. Colleges are paying comedians big money and that’s the main reason comedians still perform even when they can’t express themselves freely through comedy. In this essay, I will explore how Caitlin argues about the unjust conditions interested comedians face who want to perform in college campuses. Caitlin builds the credibility of her work by stating strong and valid points, different types of arguments and rhetoric situations.
He says he says he loves his sister Sarah, His Mother, and Father. His little sister Sarah suspects something is wrong due to his behavior because it is unlike him to say, “I love you.” to his family because he is distant towards them for a good portion of the book. Craig asks his mom if he can sleep in her bedroom tonight because he feels more comforted in his mom's room when he is feeling really depressed “bad” is how Vizzini phrases it in the book. Craig decides he is going to do it very late at night preferably early morning. He cannot sleep the night before and his mother is awake as well and makes him a nice bowl of cereal because he mentioned when they both cannot sleep they will eat cereal. After Craig and his mom both finish their cereal he still cannot sleep. He is looking around and finds a book titled, “How to survive a loss of a love” and finds the suicide hotline number and he does the right thing and call them and is transferred to another line called, “Brooklyn anxiety management” because the suicide hotline was occupied and filled. They direct him to the hospital which asks if he would think if it would be best if he institutionalized himself he agrees and says
Another thing that I liked about the book is that at the beginning, the wake/vigil/funeral was so accurately described. Funerals are awkward, tiring, and numbing. Meursault
I think the book appeals to everyone who has ever felt rejected, castaway, or uncertain whether their family or friends would accept them if they knew what really goes on under the surface.
Recently, I was reading an article that is called “The Funny Thing About Adversity” which is written by David DeSteno who is a psychology professor at Northeastern University. DeSteno’s purpose is to convince the reader that experiencing hardship makes a person sympathetic or unsympathetic depending on the case of hardship that person has experienced, and being a compassionate does not occur by chance. DeSteno makes two primary claims: one is by illustrating that if an individual has lived through unpleasant events, that person will be familiar with the difficult situations involved, which would lead a person to be sympathetic. The second claim is that it is incorrect to believe if someone has experienced the same struggle that you experienced, he might not lend a hand due to the fact that there is a glitch in the human’s mind that makes people forget about their own past hardships.
The book made me feel really engrossed until the very end. I was starting to get bored with Caleb being the new protagonist. I loved when Adam was the protagonist and he was against
My favorite part of the book was the warning signs to know when a stranger is a potential threat. This was fascinating to me because I’ve been told since I was just a little boy to beware of strangers. But with all these warnings about strangers I had never been told how to recognize when a
Craig struggles to find his place and purpose in the big city of New York. He especially struggles to communicate with girls and express himself, this leaves Craig with very few friends and no romantic relationships. The more significant cause of Craig’s depression is actually pressure to succeed in school and in life. Craig has it cemented in his mind that to have great life he has to get into a good college which leads back to him getting into the Executive Pre-Professional High School. Craig spends every minute of his eighth grade year studying to pass the test that determines if he will get into this prestigious school.
My favorite part of the book was when Mrs.Torelli told her stories. I especially liked the story she told about Violetta. I liked that story the most because it related to the hatred rosie had for janine. The story was about Mrs.torrelli when she was a kid and her friend pardo who were best friends till another girl moved to their village named violetta who made Mrs.Torelli jealous and she hated violetta because pardo was crazy over her. towards the end of Mrs.Torrelli's story she was so evil she convinced violetta to let Mrs.Torrelli to cut her hair for her and she let her but it was a trick and Mrs.Torrelli cut her hair very short to make her look “ugly” but it ended up making her even prettier with make Mrs.Torrelli angry. At the end
Adam’s senior elective is serving as an aid to the school psychologist, and he escorts Julian to her room twice a week. Adam soon learns, however, that a lot has changed in the past five years, and Julian may need more help than a few meetings with the school psychologist. This is because after
Craig has developed tremendously throughout the novel. In the beginning he was depressed, uncontent with life. However, after his recovery at the hospital he found himself and found what made him happy. He found people that accepted him for who he was. Craig was enrolled into a prestigious school for the kids that were above average. The pressure that Craig received from both his social and academic life stressed him out so much that he became depressed. Craig was lost. When the stress became too much and he wanted to die, that’s when everything had started to change. When he registered himself into the psychiatric hospital. All of the stress and the pressure had disappeared. There was no pressure to make friends or to work hard as there is
Sometimes, I do not even know why I get stressed! I get confused because I can be happy for a long period of time and then in a flash I get sad. I can also relate to Noelle because she likes to hide her feelings (she also has the same music taste as me!). This book reminds me of The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. This book reminds me of another drama filled young-adult novel, not only by the style of writing, but the plot. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a teenager who entered a new school after being “bad” for a long time. This relates to It’s Kind of a Funny Story because it is yet another book about a stressed out teenager who entered his first year in a competitive high school. I think Craig will start to get better. While that is a very broad statement - I think it’s 100% true. Craig will have his revival moment. I also think Craig and Noelle will begin to have feelings for eachother just by the way they communicate with each other (sending notes). I believe that although Craig and Noelle came to the mental-health clinic for different reasons, they still have a lot in
This book has made me feel both very happy and very sad at various points. I felt both sad and happy when his brother Jack died.
One indication of good literature is that it “rings true”- that it touches upon a topic or issue that the reader can identify with in her or her own life or experience. One literary selection that ‘rings true’ for me is It’s Kind of a Funny Story, by Ned VIzzini. This novel explores topics on suicide, mental illness, anxiety, school and stress along with everyday problems. I believe this novel can connect with many people because we as humans are prone to encounter at least one of these experiences in our life. "Girls, grades, parents, two wars, impending environmental catastrophe, a messed-up economy. All these things seemed to come out of nowhere. Like, on the same day." This shows problems that are real to each of us we all deal with these
Dan was distracted as he boarded his bus away from the living hell that was his high school. His first day back from winter holiday was finally over. Even after a whole semester, he still wasn’t sure why he had to be there. He was a mere 8th grader in a sea of high schoolers, only there because his dumb school system didn’t have a middle school. All he could ever think of was getting away. However, he had a few shining lights in the darkness that was his life, and those were his friends.
