Jaime Escalante, the new mathematics teacher at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, started his job with the determination to change the system and challenge Garfield's students to a higher level of education. Teaching unmotivated adolescent was a challenge for Escalante, but he was able to accomplish his goal. Austin Villegas is a senior at Chino Hills High School. During his time at CHHS he participated in many programs. Austin played football for all four years of his high school career. He was the starting right tackle for the freshmen football team that went 9-1 and won the league title. Latino’s haven’t always had it easy in America, some were luckier than others. Hector Garcia growing up was one of the lucky ones. His parents were educators but their credentials were denied. They resorted to teaching their kids inside the home. The Garcia kids were pushed by their parents to become doctors, so they could have a better future. Hector Garcia graduated from the University of Texas and did his residency in Omaha, Nebraska. Garcia volunteered as a infantry officer during world war two, but was denied to practice medicine while in the army. He was eventually able to serve as a medical corps officer before he was dismissed

Los Cenzontles is a band, a nonprofit organization, a music academy, a community space for youth and families as well as a hub for Latino artists. The group works together to amplify Mexican roots in the Bay Area and beyond. Los Cenzontles produces original music, videos, and educational tools. They also teach classes in traditional Mexican music, dance, and arts and crafts. The group operates Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. Dr. Lopez and Dr. Morrison were able to bring this band to Sonoma State University Weill Hall, especially for our CALS 165 class.

Ruben Salazar was born on March 3, 1928, in Ciudad Juarez, and moved to El Paso, Texas where he grew up. Ruben Salazar was a well-known journalist and activist who brought together Chicanos and Americans. He was one of the first non-white journalists in an all-white male profession and proved that he was just as capable of journalism as all of them. Salazar brought together Americans and Chicanos in many ways, he reported on Chicano events and put himself in between a very tense boundary. Salazar began as a journalist for The Los Angeles Times and became a foreign correspondent until a new more powerful Chicano movement brought him back. Juan Seguin- Juan Seguin joined William B.Travis’ army on February 23 in the Battle of the Alamo. He was there for the 13 day siege but he didn't participate in the actual battle. When he started growing up Trujillo wanted a job so what he decided to do was go and take a job as a Telephone Operator at the age of 16 years after attending a formal elementary school and a private middle school. So after he had his job for a little while Trujillo decided to forge a check from his family bank and because of that he lost his job and also was served time in jail. Juan Cortina was born in 1824, in Camargo, Tamaulipas Mexico. Racher and Politician, Juan Cortina is remembered in our history for him and his army, taking control of Brownsville. I was born at seven-thirty in Manhattan, New York on October 14th, 2002 to seventeen-year-old, Samantha Souchet and eighteen-year-old, Luis Soto. They were kids having a kid. I was raised by many women on one block. Such as my two great-grandmothers, my grandmother, my mother and my three aunts. I was the only child in the house so I kind of grew up acting like a little adult, which I still kind of act like. You tend to learn a lot of things from living with a bunch of women your whole life. I always speak of all the lessons they taught me but I hardly ever speak of my father. My father is my hero and role model.

Crude oil plays a vital role in the daily lives of Los Angeles County residents. Oil is refined into petroleum products that are consumed daily in a myriad of ways. Some of these uses include operating a vehicle, heating a home, producing electric power, and manufacturing plastics. One city in Los Angeles County was created in response to the induction of a crude oil refinery.

Diego Velazquez (1599 - 1660) was born in Seville, Spain, and was considered to be one of the most prominent painters in 17th century Europe. He was heavily involved with the Baroque period, which valued contrast, movement, and extreme detail; such features were all typical of Velazquez’s paintings. One example could be the technique called the Chiaroscuro, which originated from the Italian Renaissance and was characterised by the difference between light and dark (to create realistic form). Overall, Baroque art reflected the tension over religion (especially the Catholic Church). Developing his art practice at the height of such societal atmosphere, Velazquez’s pieces, up to a large extent, included large-scale public art and depictions of myths and biblical elements (seen in The Immaculate Conception, 1619).
