To begin James is described as someone that in our society today would be considered “pathetic”, due to the fact that he is a 28-year-old man that still lives with his parents, plays video games all day long, and has “friends” on the other side of his ear piece that he has never seen or interacted with outside of his gaming world. With this case study of James, my primary diagnosis for him would be that he is going through Schizophrenia. This is a severe disorder that is associated with some observable and apparent traits that can be seen, both mentally and physically. Schizophrenia is described to involve “…extreme oddities in perception, thinking, action, sense of self..” which are some of the symptoms seen with James and the way he interacts …show more content…
It is said that this disorder involves when an individual has “…intense sexual urges or fantasies about sexual activity with a prepubertal child.” It is not necessary that the individual act on their actions, which we see in the case study with James he does not act on his feelings; although it is not completely evident that he is suffering from pedophilia, there are some evidence that can support that he is. In the DSM-5 it is said that people with this disorder go for children who are 13 years or younger, and their “sexual urges or fantasies” usually cause interpersonal difficulty. The most predominant evidence is his parents saying that they hear noises coming from his bedroom that sound like children, and with that they believe that he may be watching child pornography and possibly masturbating to it. It is especially weird that when his parents ask him a question he has a hard time sticking to a conversation, instead he “trails off”. Another important aspect is that since he may have this disorder which involves children and his overuse of playing video games…it is obvious that children are more prone to playing video games, and the voices that he hears on the other side of his XBOX could possibly be children that he talks to and tries to be friends with. As my differential diagnosis I would choose Pedophilic Disorder to be my second …show more content…
Although I believe therapy treatments would more of an affect on him, because not everything needs medication. With the therapies that I would consider using I would use cognitive and behavioural therapy. Due to him having negative feelings towards his parents and him thinking that they are plotting against him, I would cognitive therapy. This will help him in one on one training with the therapist, where they can focus intensively on replacing his negatively distorted thoughts into more of a positive, friendly mindset. When it comes to behaviour therapy, which is commonly used to treat behaviour patterns in order to help individuals affected with a disorder to hopefully be able to break their unhealthy streak. Considering that many of James actions and thoughts are shown as negative and unusual ones this will be a very helpful aspect in getting the proper assistance he needs. And I would also include some self-care tips for his family, in order to help them know some of the steps that can be taken on their part to help their son get on a more “normal”
The True Life episode, I have Schizophrenia, documented the struggles of three adults who suffer from Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorder. This paper will focus around Josh and whether he actually has Schizophrenia.
3. What mental health treatment modalities would be helpful to Randy in addition to medication?
I chose to write my research paper over Schizophrenia. It is a psychological disorder that I have always found fascinating. It is a serious disorder that consumes a person's life and is nearly impossible to control. In this paper, I will talk about the definition of Schizophrenia, the diagnosis of Schizophrenia, Schizophrenia in children, suicide, sexually related characteristics of the disease, sleep disorders caused by the disease, differences in the disease on different ethnicities, and insensitivity to pain.
Jim Stevens “Schizophrenia” is open to interpretation. The title “Schizophrenia” sticks out because it is a mental disorder that affects how a person feels, thinks, and acts; it leads the reader to believe this poem has a dark undertone. Each line gives a story of how a family deals with the issues of two people in a relationship. For instance, in the last line of the poem, "It was the House that suffered the most" (Stevens line 1), Stevens indicates the relationship was not a happy one and the house suffered for it. He sets up the image with this opening line and repeats it in the close of the poem. Throughout the poem, the house transforms from a symbol to a person.
At six years old, James was diagnosed with ADHD and was prescribed a stimulant medication for a short few months. There was some concern from his teachers that he also should be assessed for a learning disability. James lived with his mother Karen, father Rick, and two younger sisters. Meanwhile, there was child abuse occurring in the household. The vicious cycle was repeating itself; Karen was abused by her parents, and she allowed the cycle to continue. Taking James’s case into consideration that he suffers from three core concepts, physical violation, living on the edge of not knowing what his father’s mood or action would be from minute to minute, constantly living in the state of fear or the unexpected.

“The Soloist” is a movie about a talented musician in his mid-fifties named Nathaniel Anthony Ayers. He attended Julliard but had to drop out due to the onset of schizophrenic episodes. His time at Julliard playing the cello was cut short when the voices in his head at the onset of his schizophrenia began to interfere with his playing. After having difficulties with his family, he found himself living on the streets of Los Angeles.
Most people consider pedophiles to be anyone who has committed a sex offense against a child and that all pedophiles will commit this offense. In both cases that is, at best, a half truth. The DSM-5, which is a tool that outlines the diagnostic criteria for a given disorder, defines pedophilic disorder as, “a paraphilia involving intense and recurrent sexual urges towards and fantasies about prepubescent children that have either been acted upon or which cause the person with the attraction distress or interpersonal difficulty.” With the latter half of this definition, we begin to open up to the idea that there are those who have sexual interests in children who have had no form of inappropriate contact with a child, but rather just have their daily life affected by the feelings that they are having toward
Mr. Clark is a thirty-year-old African American male currently residing at Fillmore Place Assisted Living Facility in Petersburg, Virginia. It is important to note that the current ALF does not provide skill-building services. Mr. Clark presented with a flat affect but was forthcoming during the assessment and willingly provided information regarding his past and current functionality. At the time of this assessment Mr. Clark was appropriately groomed and his hygiene was normal for his age. It is noted that Mr. Clark acknowledged his mental health diagnosis of Schizophrenia however, believes his diagnosis is the consequence of him smoking a laced blunt in 2003 or 2004 when he was living in Ohio. Mr. Clark sees Dr. Holden (Psychiatrist). Mr.
Alex was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 24. Alex acted out in anger to the point that his family was scared to be around him at times. When asked Alex reports that he felt as if he was an outcast when in school, and in society.
Until lately, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has categorized pedophilia as a condition where the adult has an enduring sexual interest in children that is often exclusive. However, recent controversy over the definition of pedophilia has led to a reexamination of the word and a new definition has been formed. According to the DSM-V, the newest version of the DSM, pedophilia is a condition in which a person has recurrent, sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children, generally age 13 years or younger, for a period of at least 6 months. The person has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.
John Nash is an American male. He is married and has one child. He graduated at Princeton University with a Ph. D. Nash began to exhibit symptoms of schizophrenia when he started Princeton university. His first hallucination was his roommate, named Charles Herman. His hallucination of a roommate developed because Nash felt pressure in life and wanted support. The second hallucination was William Parcher, whom he stated that he works for by breaking Russian codes. It was at the same time that he developed delusions that the Russian are trying to kill him. This hallucination occurs because he felt under appreciated at work. The third Hallucination is Marcee, Charles Herman's niece. This hallucination occurs because Nash was feeling stressful in his life. Marcee offers him emotional support through his stressful
After studying Jeff’s symptoms, I came to the conclusion that Jeff does not have schizophrenia. The text states, “Abnormalities in one or more of the five domains: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, grossly disorganized or abnormal motor behavior, and negative symptoms (Diagnostic and statistical, 2013, p. 87). Jeff does not demonstrate symptoms of delusion, hallucinations, disorganized thinking nor grossly disorganized. However, Jeff does show negative symptoms of Avolition and Asociality. He has shown little of no interest in participating in work or social activities (Diagnostic and statistical, 2013, p. 88).
Throughout psychology today there are six different theoretical models that seek to explain and treat abnormal functioning or behavior. These different models have been a result of different ideas and beliefs over the course of history. As psychology began to grow so did the improvements in research techniques. As a result psychologists are able to explain a variety of disorders in terms of the six different theoretical models. In the movie A Beautiful Mind it follows the mathematician John Nash as he struggles with schizophrenia. It an attempt to explain John Nash’s disorder the six different theoretical models will be looked at, they include biological model, psychodynamic model, behavioral model, cognitive model, humanistic model,
The patient M. is a 26 year old married female who was brought to the ER by her husband after increased anxiety and depression worsened after a “spiritual attack” that lasted for over four days. While in the ER the patient admitted to hearing multiple distant male and female voices all around her head and outside of her head. She states not being able to make out the message but interprets them to be negative in nature. She told the ER Doc she felt people were trying to harm her and that “people in her life have used things against her.” She felt her extended family may have used witchcraft and “chakra dolls” to cast spells on her. She is cognizant of the strangeness of her claims but believes them to be real
