What is power? Power means the strength and the right given of controlling anyone else. However, when too much power is given to someone, dictatorship cannot be avoided. In the book “Animal Farm”, George Orwell used a lot of events happened on the farm to illustrate that how did the ‘animalism’ turn into “totalitarianism” and well defined the sentence “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”, which also reflects how the society was like at that time. Therefore, in order to find out the reason why George Orwell wrote the story, this essay will talk about how power is abused and the effect on other "comrades" by using several events and the examples of language features used in the story.

In Animal Farm there were many cases in which the animals were either lied to or given false information to make their current situation seem more appeasing than what the reality was. George Orwell, in Animal Farm, addresses blind conformity and misuse of power. There are many comparisons between Animal Farm and Germany under Hitler’s tyranny concerning these two themes. Napoleon and Hitler both used propaganda to ensure there was blind conformity amongst the common people/animals and they both misused their power. The two themes of blind conformity and misuse of power are constantly repeated throughout the novel and will be studied throughout this essay.

The novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell, was an allegory about the Russian Revolution in which the author used a farm and it’s members to symbolize major characters and their actions. In this composition, I will reveal to you many of Joseph Stalin’s important contributions and how they relate to the actions of Napoleon from Animal Farm. The Russian Revolution was led by a few leaders of the common people, promising better work conditions and a Communist government with equality for all. However, when the Communist party was established, so much power was given to the government, that, it quickly went corrupt and abused peoples’ rights far worse than the previous government. In George Orwell’s book, Animal Farm, the pigs promise the animals better lives than their current lives under Jones’s rule. However, mirroring the Russian Revolution, the pigs went corrupt almost immediately afterwards, changing previously declared rules, and killing other animals without reason. In the end, the pigs ended up as bad as man. In Animal Farm, George Orwell utilizes situational irony, displaying the pigs as corrupt leaders, to support Lord Acton’s quote: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Led by Old Major, a wise pig that represents Karl Marx, the founder of the socialism, the animals on Manor Farm try to establish a self-sufficient farm run by animals with no outside human contact. This “self-sufficient farm” called Animal Farm was focused on creating a system where everyone is equal and happy, and no animal could be above any other animal. However, what happened in Russia as well as other communist countries, was that the interim government that existed to facilitate the change to socialism became venal and didn't care or pay attention to the social equality of all the people. The interim government, represented by pigs in Animal Farm did not give up their power, leading to the oppressive governmental system called communism. Additionally, in Animal Farm, the communist “pigs”, Snowball and Napoleon, did not pay attention to the growing social gap as they grew more powerful on the farm and ended up going against their original philosophies to keep all animals

Once the farm has been taken over by the animals, they are all equal at first, but class and status soon separates the different animal species.
