During Holden’s conversation with Horowitz, Horowitz talks a lot about the fish in the lagoon, which symbolize adults, and make Holden feel different, more desperate and like he doesn’t belong anywhere. In the course of the conversation, Horowitz keeps saying that the fish “don’t go no place” (92) because the lagoon is “their nature” (92) and Mother Nature takes care of them. Holden is not satisfied with Horowitz’s argument and he says that “the fish is different” (92) and that he is “talking about the ducks” (92). Holden seems to compare the fish to adults, in contrast to the ducks who he compares to himself, and he completely rejects everything Horwitz says about the fish instead of trying to apply it to himself. The fact that Holden can’t
In J. D Salinger 's novel, The Catcher in the Rye, the protagonist, Holden, goes through many hardships in his journey to self-knowledge. In the beginning, Holden has to deal with being kicked out of school and not having any place to call home. He is also struggling with the unfortunate tragedy of the death of his beloved younger brother Allie. At the same time, Holden is trying to deal with growing up and accepting the adult world. Throughout the novel Salinger addresses the conflicts faced by a young man struggling with the trials and tribulations of growing up while also confronting personal loss and loneliness along the way.
Holden been to the carousel in Manhattan to take his little sister Phoebe to ride it. It reminded Holden about him being a kid again. Holden suddenly started to feel happy that he almost cried. In page 210, it said,”Anyway, we keep getting closer and closer to the carousel and you can start to hear that nutty it always play. It was playing,” Oh Marie!”. It played the same song about fifty years ago when I was a little kid. That’s one nice thing about carousels, they always play the same song.” This whole quote is illustrating how it when he take Phoebe to ride the carousel, it reminded him of his childhood. He said things like how they’ve been playing the same music for fifty years when he was a kid. He took Phoebe mainly cause he probably
In J.D. Salinger's book Catcher in the Rye, the main character, Holden Caulfield has quite the adventurous downfall. The story takes place in New York City, though in actual fact it is hinted that Holden is recalling the story in an insane asylum. Holden is responsible for his downfall because of his risky behaviour, his mental breaking point, and his internal conflicts.
“’Like hell it (red hunting hat) is.’ I took it off and looked at it. I sort of closed one eye, like I was taking aim at it. ‘This is a people shooting hat,’ I said. ‘I shoot people in the hat’” (Salinger 22).
Do people ever like to be lonely? Depressed? Feeling like no one cares or likes them? According to www.dascot.org one out of every four people struggle with depression. Not having friends can cause and lead to depression. All human beings are disconnected and they need to work at relating to others. Jim Stark from “Rebel Without a Cause” and Holden Caulfield from the The Catcher in the Rye are teenagers who struggle with connecting themselves to human beings.
1. Quote: “ She was a funny girl, old Jane. I wouldn’t exactly describe her as strictly beautiful. She knocked me out, though. She was sort of muckle-mouthed. I mean when she was talking and she got excited about something, her mouth sort of went off in about fifty directions, her lips and all. That killed me. And she never really closed it all the way, her mouth. It was always just a little bit open, especially when she got in her golf stance, or when she read very good books. She read a lot of poetry and all. She was the only one, outside my family, that i ever showed Allie’s baseball mitt to, with all the poems on it. She’d never met Allie or anything, because that was her first summer in Maine-before that, she went to Cape Cod-but I told
The novel is immediately addressed with a bitter tone, projected by the narrator. The beginning sentence of the novel, “...what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth,” possibly foreshadows a tragic event that has happened in the narrator’s life thus far. The narrator, Holden, goes on to introduce his brother, who has apparently been sucked into Hollywood and has recently proclaimed a shallow lifestyle full of fortunes, whom Holden later addresses as a “prostitute”. Holden continues to introduce negative events that have recently happened in his life: losing the equipment
Holden’s alienation is a result of how he wants to avoid the problems in his life and how he doesn 't want to acknowledge them. This character of a brooding adolescent is created to show the physical effects of events in his life. Throughout the chapters he frequently refers to the hardships in his life. These hardships include his brother’s death at a young age, his intimacy issues, and inability to form healthy relationships.Holden’s innocent manner therefore is caused by the impression that his brother’s death left on him.His unknown sense of identity has subsequently made him feel detached from his own family. As his elder brother and younger sister are considerably successful,Their successes have made the recently kicked out Holden feel
The final symptom Holden experiences is his irrational behavior which is displayed several times throughout the novel. "You're a dirty...and you'll be-" (Salinger 103). Holden angrily backfires at Maurice, a man who began attacking Holden, clearly stronger than the teenager, thus only adding fuel to the fire. Holden's careless attitude results in him making ruthless decisions, such as agreeing to have a prostitute such as Sunny or willing to run away with Sally Hayes. "If you have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), you're probably aware of the strong connection between your condition and impulsive behaviors. Most of the time, you do something impulsively as a way of finding relief from a stressful feeling--for example, a painful emotion"
Actually I don’t know where I should start to tell my confounded life. Probably you know my family or saw on news; my father was working as a drug dealer, and he had loved milk. Milk… Milk saved my life. It was just ordinary; I got up with a buzz. When I entered the living room, I saw my mom with that stretch her pilates costume. She was disgusting as hell. You know pilates, girls do for looking well—such phoniness. After I saw her, I went the Silvio who is owner of the grocery. Believe me, he is the phoniest person that you can see. He cheats on his wife, every time that he can. Goddamn bastard. I left the house (I got the ax). When I came back, I heard racket which was coming from upstairs. Then… then I faced the goddamn stiffs of my family; even those sons of bitches killed my little brother. Blood coming from his back was flowing like a river. I was terribly shocked; my life was upside-down. I had not any money, a house to live and a family to be with them since they killed because of touchy job of my dad. Then I heard the oncoming footsteps, at that time I got that I was getting in trouble. Only way to live is escaping from that garbage, but there was one thing that I cannot decide: Where can I go? When I took a step, I faced with the D.E.A agents who are the murderers of my family. I attempted to run as hard as I can. Believe me, I am terrific runner. Did I tell the story about I broke the world record in athleticism last year? I was
Holden Caulfield entered my office a seemingly controlled, passive young adult. It would become utterly obvious that he was the complete opposite. Exposed to great trauma at a very early age, he desperately tries to control everything in his life: maturation, innocence in others and himself, and various other trivial subjects in life which others might pass by. Ultimately trying to be a "Catcher In The Rye", he wants to control and protect the people he loves. Also showing classic symptoms of a borderline personality disorder, he has a severe inability to experience "middle grounds" of situations, emotions, etc. This is reflected in almost everything he says and does.
The presence of strong as well as effective leadership in today’s organization imposes a great responsibility to the organization’s team and management networks as leadership implies the overall capacity of the organization’s performance like for instance, in terms of operations and research development. It can be said that Amazon’s resources and capabilities can be divided in the management of the company specifically their leader which is Bezos, the ability of the management to effectively use strategic supply chain management and aligning it with their business process and information technology, their competitive advantage in the online market, and the financial resources that it gains through its successful approaches.
Jeffrey Bezos, formerly a senior vice president for D. E. Shaw & Company, founded Amazon.com in 1994. D. E. Shaw is a Wall Street-based investment bank, and Mr. Bezos was assigned to find good Internet companies in which to invest. During the summer of 1994, he stumbled across a
In concert with high rivalry in the industry, the ecommerce industry has seen large brick-and-mortar retailers making moves to catch up with Amazon. Amazon came to dominate the ecommerce industry through technology, innovation, a laser focus on customer experience and efficient operations. The company had a first mover advantage, but today, as traditional retailers look at growth in the ecommerce market and see it beginning to chip away at traditional retail’s share of the overall market (Exhibit 3), these companies are making moves to further increase their own sophistication. In October, Best Buy brought in former Expedia president, Scott Durschlag, to head its ecommerce business and to “boost its online transformation.” In 2011, Wal-Mart acquired Koomix, hoping to apply “artificial intelligence to commerce.” It also hired the well-regarded Silicon Valley engineer who was instrumental in the development of eBay’s infrastructure as its Chief Technological Officer. Wal-Mart and eBay both announced this fall that they
