Scout – Scout is the main character and she is the narrator of the story. Her real name is Jean Louise Finch. She lives on main residential street in Maycomb, Alabama. Her father is Atticus Finch and her brother is Jem. Her mother died from a heart attack when she was two years old. She doesn’t miss her much, because she doesn’t clearly remember her. She is a tomboy and hangs out with Jem and Dill most of the time.
Jem – Jem’s full name is Jeremy Atticus Finch. Jem is Scout’s brother. He is four years older than Scout. Jem’s mother died of a heart attack. when he was about six years old. He was very distraught, because he could remember her clearly. He lives on main residential street in Maycomb, Alabama. He always accepts dares no matter how difficult. She was near-sighted and always squinted to see. She was very skinny and boney. Scout and Calpurnia would have one-sided which she won, because Atticus always sided with her. Scout says that Calpurnia treats Jem better than she treated her. She worked for the Finches since Jem was born. She had more eductaion than most colored people.
Heck Tate – Heck Tate was the sheriff of Maycomb County. His height wa the same as Atticus, but he was skinnier. He had a long nose and always wore boots and boot pants with a lumber jacket. He had a row of bullets on his belt and a rifle with him.
Maycomb, Alabama - Maycomb is an old town which the Finch family lives. When it rained the streets turned to red splatter. Then sidewalks had grass growing on it. Men’s newly pressed collars diminished by nine and women bathed before twelve. Later they would take their three o’clock naps. There was no rush to go anywhere, for there was nowhere to go.

The community of Maycomb is of mixed ethnicity and like most places of that time the white people believe they were the dominant race. The book is seen through the eyes of two children: Jem and Scout Finch who are growing up in this society. As Jem gets older he becomes conscious of the fact that this community and these adults who surround him are not always right and this makes him feel lost. Jem is older than Scout and clearly remembers his mother.
Scout Finch is the narrator of the book; she is very mature in her opinions and actions. She is a tomboy, which leads her to be very competitive and to get in fights with her male classmates. However, Scout is a very good kid; she always has the best intentions for her actions. Scout's primary role model is her father, Atticus who's main concerns while raising her was for her to become an intelligent, conscientious, individual while also being innocent to the social pressures of her town as a child.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents Atticus Finch as a principled lawyer, committed but single father to Scout and Jem, and a law-abiding citizen. Atticus is a respectable gentleman in society and a role model for his children. Throughout the book we see evidence of his honorable intentions, though he doesn’t seem to reap the rewards. Along with these stereotypes comes racism. Jem and Scout first experience racism against them when Calpurnia takes them to her church one Sunday. Another member of Calpurnia’s church berates Calpurnia for bringing Jem and Scout into an all-black church. Calpurina refuses to let berating change her mind about allowing the children to attend her church. Rather than allow the children to go home as Jem suggests, Calpurnia challenges the racism against white people and proclaims that the children are her “comp’ny” (Lee 158).
