Jem Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird “To kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is set a small town called Maycomb in Alabama, in the 1930s. The community of Maycomb is of mixed ethnicity and like most places of that time the white people believe they were the dominant race. The book is seen through the eyes of two children: Jem and Scout Finch who are growing up in this society. As Jem gets older he becomes conscious of the fact that this community and these adults who surround him are not always right and this makes him feel lost. Jem is older than Scout and clearly remembers his mother.
Given the harsh circumstances that involved discrimination and racism during the 1900s, the understanding and empathy of a young Jem Finch shines through the plot of To Kill A Mockingbird like a star. Under the spectacular influence of Atticus Finch, Jem’s compassion always seems to prevail, no matter what the situation may be. This is used in great effect to justify the ethical theme of the story. That being that everyone deserves the same rights and freedoms. In the book specifically, this is conveyed through the unequal privilege of a “fair trial”. It was shown that the black society stood no chance in court when Bob Ewell, a poor white man, accused Tom Robinson, a black man, of raping
"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."Jem has changed from a childish little boy to a 12 year old young adult and is able to make smart decisions.
It has been nearly ten years since something similar this has happened. I would have never thought this day would come so soon, well at least not for my brother Jem that is. I never really thought of how it would happen or how old we would be or if I would even be there when it did happen. I have not cried so hard since Dill had told Jem and me he was being drafted and that he would not end up marrying me after all that time. Jem was only twenty-two years old, he was the only family I had left since Atticus started drinking and we had cut off all connections from Maycomb, but I never imagined I would lose Jem so soon. Jem and I moved down to Georgia when Jem was old enough to take care of me. Jem was so inspired by Atticus trying to defend a colored man back in Maycomb he chose Georgia so he could make a difference in the lives of the colored folks who needed some inspiration of their own. Although, Jem’s idea of inspiring the folks of Georgia was quite different than I thought of him. Jem convinced me to protest with him, protest that blacks should get paid as much as whites, blacks should get the same opportunities that white folks did. At first I was only going along with him because I did not know where to go, I wish I did know where to go and I knew what was going to happen and I could have avoided being at my only brother’s funeral. It all started when he met Roy Edwards at the county jail, Jem’s job did not pay enough to supply the both of us with food and shelter so

Throughout the story there are many times when Atticus has to teach Jem to have the correct behavior towards people who said many hateful things about his father, and when Atticus has to correct him on other foolish acts a boy his age does. Atticus had to teach him how to treat people when he destroyed the plants in Mrs. Dubose's yard, when he learns about his father defending a black man, and the time when he snuck up in the Radley's yard. Jem also learns many valuable life lessons from the ways Atticus deals with all of the hatred towards him and his family.

Atticus Finch once said, “you never really understand a person until you consider things from [their] point of view” (Lee 85-87). Scout was a sassy, fearless, and being a smart mouth in the beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. “He hasn't taught me anything, Miss Caroline. Atticus ain't got time to teach me anything.” Scout said(Lee 22). Not only did she talk back to a teacher but she also said with a smart mouth. Although, Miss Caroline wasn't totally correct for judging Scout, she still should have nicely responded. Not only is it Scout’s speech but also her actions. As quoted in the book,”Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop”(Lee 30). This shows that she’s fearless and ruthless because she couldn't have known if Walter could fight or not but she still
Older brothers are typically the ones who annoy and bully the younger siblings with love. They are the ones who the parents rely on to help around the house. Jem Finch is a little bit different than the typical older brother to a little girl, but then again his little sister isn’t that ordinary either. Jem Finch displays many character traits.
