According to Biography.com, “Jerome David Salinger was an American author whose known for writing The Catcher in The Rye. He was born on January 1st 1919 in New York, New York. Jerome graduated from Valley Forge. He also attend New York University before heading to Europe. His father encouraged him to learn about business. He spent five months overseas in Vienna. He was also drafted into the army in 1942. He had to kids named Matt and Margaret Salinger” ( J.D Salinger Biography). Jerome is known for his book The Catcher in The Rye. He has written a chunk of books throughout his life. He wrote Nine Stories and Franny and Zooey as well. The only books that was challenged was The Catcher in The Rye. Expelled from his school at 16, he goes to New York City, on his journey, he becomes an alcoholic, cigarette smoker, and suffers emotional breakdowns. Holden is an uneducated teenager who can’t be controlled. He decide to live his life privately. The Catcher in Rye is set around 1950’s in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden Caulfield would be a great feminist. why , because he's a caregiver, he respects women's rights, he's a radical person. He cares about his sister Phoebe and other little kids thoughout the story. He objectifies the heck out of Sally Hayes, enjoying the view of her in her ice skating skirt, and he does the same with a few other women. But he doesn’t take advantage of them, and the hates the thought that any man might. He’s from the 50’s a time when going against the grain was frowned upon. Censorship 1. During 1961 and 1982, The Catcher in the Rye was the most censored book in high schools and libraries in the United States.
