Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. Located in between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, It is the main destination for those tourists that have a desire of getting a grasp of the Western East Countries, and for many, a unique religious experience. However, Jerusalem: also called the "Holy Land" has by its name a very controversial meaning: " The City of Peace". Once ago in this place, according to the Hebrew Bible (The Tanakh), the Temple of Solomon was built. According to the Muslim Bible (The Quran), also the location of the Dome of the Rock. From the Christian point of view and The Bible, It was once the place where the trial, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus took place. This series of religious events have brought up along with it a conflict in between Middle Eastern Countries for more than 50 years long with one main question on the plate: Who fairly and ethically deserves to live in the Holy Land? This conflict is among Jews and Arabs. Palestine for the Arabs is a land whose Oil has been cultivated by them for generations. Israel, as later called by the Jews, is a land of inspiration that is destined for them, since many Jews had been living in Israel and emigrating previously (Fraser,1). This shows the Socio-Political and religious roots of the conflict. The Arabic population is currently located in Jerusalem, but the Jewish Population in Israel has a strong desire of relocating to Jerusalem someday, and have been fighting for this to happen
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the one of the world’s oldest conflicts, and it is still an ongoing problem in the world. Zionists and Arabs: two groups with conflicting beliefs who both claim Israel as their own. In wake of the Holocaust the U.N decided to gift the Jews a homeland for the lives lost in the genocide. In 1947, the U.N Partition divided the land of Israel (Historic Palestine) into two separate states: Arab and Jewish. Since then, the state of Israel has been the center of conflict between the Arabs and the Zionists. As time passed the Zionists gained more land from winning the Six-Day War, and consequently the Palestinians had to live as refugees in other Arab countries. Additionally, more than 75% of the land belonged to
The Arab/Israeli conflict is a conflict between the Arabs and the Jews over a small piece of land known as the holy land which is an area in the Middle East of the Arab world. The Arabs call the land Palestine, the Jews call it Israel but both religions have strong religious links with the land. There is conflict between the two religions because they both believe that the land belongs to them.
The crisis in Jerusalem dragged both Israel and Palestine into a vortex of violence and a religious conflict. Both Israelis and Palestinians had claim the city as a sacred religious site and their political capital. The conflict became quite violent causing the closure of holy sites, a deadly terrorist attack caused the Palestinian's to end all contact with Israel. Despite the peace efforts between the states, societies continued to rupture along ethnic and religious lines. Israel's continued unfolding with religious conflict and persisted in illegal actions causing living conditions for Palestinian civilians to become unlivable. Jews have formed the largest religious group in the city and have been in the majority. However, the Arab and Jewish communities in Palestine were in mortal dispute. Under an agreement approved by the United Nations, Jerusalem was meant to become a separated body but due to Arab forces sieging Jerusalem, and withdrawing of the British mandate, Jerusalem became a huge battleground. Jewish settlers pushed Muslim Arabs out of their homes and established the state of Israel on their land during the middle of the 20th century. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are extremely tied to the ancient city due to them recognizing Jerusalem as a holy place. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is over which gets what land and how that land is
What do you think about the conflicts with the Arab and Israelis conflict going on in the now what’s called the country of Israel? The Arab and Israelis were constantly arguing and fighting over the country of Israel mainly because of the holy city of both religions Israel. I believe that there are 3 main conflicts one of the first reasons is because both groups were fighting over the country of Israel because of the holy city of Jerusalem. Another reason is because Britain had promised both groups the land of Israel. Finally is that the Jews had went into Palestine and kicked people out of the country.
In the very beginning, King David booted out the founders of the city, the Canaanites, and it continued changing hands from the Babylonians, to the Romans, to the Byzantines and Turks, and to the fight between Muslims and Christians in the Third Crusade (Burke). Then, in 1948, Israel began taking control of the Holy Land from the Palestinians that already inhabited Jerusalem, initiating yet another bout of violence and discord that still hasn’t seen its end. As stated in “Primer On Palestine, Israel, and the Arab-Israeli Conflict,” while the groups are of different religions, “religious differences are not the cause of the strife. The conflict became known as a struggle over
There are lots of debates concerning the causes that gave birth to this endless conflict; some believe that religion has been the main reason of the dispute due to the importance of the holy city of Jerusalem for both Islamism and Judaism. Others believe that it has been caused by the Western colonialism, which has favoured the self-determination of the Zionists by denying the self-determination of the Arabs of Palestine. Others even think it is an ethnic dimension that has led the two populations to the war.
Jerusalem is important for Christians because it is the place where Jesus lived his last days and experienced his suffering and crucifixion, death on the cross, and resurrection. Precisely in the city of Jerusalem is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which was built on what is considered the tomb of Christ. For the Jews, Jerusalem is sacred because of the Wailing Wall, which is the remains of the second temple built by Herod the Great, king of Judea. (The first temple was built by King Solomon). Finally, Jerusalem is also holy to those who profess faith to Allah (al-Quds in Arabic). The mosque, Dome of the Rock, was built upon the very place that the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven, according to the Muslim religion. I found it fascinating and interesting to see that all three religions profess that their holiest place on earth are all in close proximity to one another. Does this mean anything?
While there are many religions that have a religious connection the the city, Judaism has by far the strongest connection because of the Western Wall, the two temples, and the Torah. As stated before, Jerusalem is mentioned many times throughout the Torah, while in the Quran, Jerusalem is not mentioned once. (in text citation). Israel is a religious state, specifically a Jewish state. It would make sense to make the holiest site of Judaism the capital of the religious state. Even though Israel is a religious state, there is religious freedom in the country under the Knesset Law. The law states, “places holy to the peoples of all religions shall be protected from any desecration and from any restriction of free access to them.” (in text citation) Since the 1860s, the Jewish people have been the largest ethnic group in Jerusalem and has not yet been interrupted. (in text citation). Splitting Jerusalem into East and West Jerusalem will separate and cause Jewish people to leave their homes on the East side, since the majority of the city is Jewish people. In Israel, as well as all over the world, there is an ideology called Zionism. Zionists believe, “Judaism is a nationality as well as a religion, and that Jews deserve their own state in their ancestral homeland,” (in text citation) Zionism creates a feeling of nationalism and pride. After the persecution of the Jewish people during the Holocaust, many Jewish people felt the need to have a home and a safe place. A reason Israel was established as the homeland for the Jewish people was because of this persecution, persecutions throughout history, and the innate connection between the Jewish people and
The land of Israel has been the epicenter of Jewish-Muslims relations for hundreds of years. The Jewish claimed lands in Israel and established Jerusalem roughly five thousand years ago. Having survived through multiple of the world’s most powerful empires, the Jewish largely remained in the holy land of Israel. However, after angering Muhammad, the Muslim general Omar conquered Israel in 638 AD (Arlandson). The Muslims took complete control over Jerusalem and claimed the city to be the second holiest site in Islam. The intentions of Jerusalem were to allow Muslims to pray towards Jerusalem or Mecca and to allow Muslims to complete the Hajj if Mecca was ever forced to be shut off to foreigners (Pipes). In the mid 600s, the Umayyad dynasty
Through the deliverance of a speech the former Pope Urban II incited Catholics all over Europe to take action in reclaiming the Holy city of Jerusalem from the Muslims in the Middle East. It was in this year,1095, that the beginning of the first, of nine, Crusades and thus the first series of religious wars between the Catholics and Muslims begun. The focus of this paper will remain on the Third Crusade (1189-1192 A.D)- more specifically the actions of ‘Islam’s Warrior Hero’ Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb who was better known to the English as Saladin- Sultan of Egypt. How did one individual gain the respect of both his Muslim followers and his enemies- the Catholic Europeans? Throughout history Saladin has been portrayed as a charismatic, honourable, virtuous and chivalrous man by the historians and chroniclers of the Middle East and Europe. Even the Europeans who sought to dislike this man due to his religious affiliations could not, as he encompassed all the qualities in which a great leader and a good ‘Christian’ was thought to possess.
Terrorism and war have affected Israel, and the people living there, ever since they became their own nation. Over the long history of Jerusalem it has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. Jerusalem was established by King David as the capital city of Israel, however there has since been a struggle of which religion should occupy the region. Christians and Muslims have been fighting a long time to control the land of Israel because they both feel they are entitled to it. The Muslims believe Muhammad's armies founded Israel. On the other hand, the Christians feel positive that the land should be theirs because they founded it first. Numerous people have died over the years for
In the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been one of the most controversial conflicts in modern history, dating back to when the region was dominated by British rule. Beginning long before the formation of the state of Israel in 1948, Israel and Palestine have clashed over who can claim the holy land. The Israelis believe that they should solely have possession of the holy land, being a gift from God to Abraham to Isaac, according to the Bible. Contradicting the Israelis, the Palestinians believe the holy land was given to Ishmael from Abraham, who is an ancestor to the Muslim people. From 1914 to modern times, Israel has underwent positive changes between the Israelis and Palestinians through the formation of declarations
The Holy Land. What comes to mind when those words are read? To those living in Palestine and Israel 'The Holy Land' is the center of an ongoing and seemingly endless conflict. Two countries, both unwilling to acknowledge the others existence, battling over land that holds a key role in their extensive history. The topic of which country rightfully owns the land has been argued over for years, all involved doing their best to validate their points. I personally believe that Israel is the rightful owner of The Holy Land because the Jews were there before the Muslim's, archaeological evidence of their ancient presence has been discovered, and the land was promised to them by God.
The Arab-Israeli Conflict, and the struggle for a religious homeland, is a complex and somewhat mystified conflict. The tensions between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples can be traced back to Biblical times, when Abraham allocated for one of his sons, Isaac, to lay claim to Judea or modern day Israel. Muslims claimed that the elder son Ishmael had been allocated the region in the Qur’an. Although many historians believe otherwise, these claims are still the more popular historical context amongst monotheistic practitioners.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine is just one of the many facets that have shaped modern day politics in the Middle East. It is a conflict rooted in generations of violence, discrimination and prejudice that is complicated by a history older than any of the modern day superpowers. Ever since the creation of the state of Israel by the 1947 UN partition of Palestine
